Fix a Sony A7/A7R/A7S screen that is scuffed or scratched

Thanks for this! It should be noted that the PCK-LM16 part (the video description has the part number wrong) is NOT the same as the original screen protector. It is a thicker, harder protector that adheres to the screen differently than the original part and does not have the same anti-reflective coating as the original.

Thank you so much for your video. I also watched the other KZbin video, bought a normal screen protector, then realised I need to buy the original Sony protector. The W40 trick suggested by another person commented below also was a great tip; otherwise, I really wouldn't able get rid of all the old glue. Now, my old A7 mark one looks so nice again. Use some citrus oil based adhesive remover (like goo-gone) on a cloth with only as much as needed to slightly moisten it. It cuts through adhesive easily. However, don't let it soak into cracks an crevices, else you'll get adhesive dissolving in places you don't want.

Even better I picked it up from Amazon so arrived next day! Yes, I would get A7R. A7 is a great price used and a great entry point for full frame. But for me the sensor of the A7R is still pretty incredible in terms of resolution and dynamic range. It's great for landscapes, portrait, still life, macro.... AF and video features are more than a little dated, but for £600 or less secondhand is a tremendous deal when you consider what you can buy new for that price. A7 is about £100-150 less, so as a cheap full frame entry-point its great, but I’d go for resolution

@@Photogearnews thanks! Seems like an A7R the 35mm 2.8 and 85m 1.8 would be a good start into full frame, great resolution and some excellent sharpness, for less than an EOS R! Very interested to see what happens with canons new mount, looks spectacular lens wise!

👍Good video. I’m impressed with how quickly you did the task!😂. One has to be careful to keep dust off the old surface after cleaning it and before applying the new one. I still have my A7 - first model had its quirks (noisy shutter, shutter button not tilted, etc.) but it was very light weight. Also, there were many reports of light leaks around the lens mounting flange on the body - so many that third parties made replacements. (Same w/original A6000.). A vid on replacing the flange might be useful. Third parties make screen overlays and replacements for the A7 and A6k line - not all the same, w/same fit, so need care in compatibility.

Oh yeah... super fast! (It was actually a good few minutes). Yep, a speck of dust can settle so quickly. I’ve not heard about the light leaks! I’ll do some research and maybe do something on that. And yes, I’m currently using an A7 III, but if I need that extra resolution that A7R is still a monster camera and is a great price on the secondhand market! Thanks for taking a few minutes of your day to write your comments! Always like hearing experiences and ideas for future videos

I had this problem on my nex 5. I simply polished the screen protection to make it even. First thing I did when I bought the a7s was to buy a screen protector... Good cameras but that s Sony, quality flaws. Rubber worn out, doors becoming loose etc

Not really, I've used isopropyl but also extraction gasoline for more than 20 minutes. It was hard but I've removed it. Plastic knife on the edges (not on usable screen area) will help.

The glue on my model was so stubborn that even though I were careful, when I removed the old protector, it pulled the screen so strong, now I have dead pixels at the edges...fuck me. Disclaimer: I'm not saying it's Richard's fault, just thought it would be useful information for those who plan on replacing the protector.

Yeah, it’s a strange one. Obviously not great that on these early cameras the later seems to delaminate. But on the very positive side, it’s great that if you do scratch the ‘screen’ that it is actually just a protective layer you can replace yourself with a part you can get from Amazon

@@Photogearnews Do the later generations of these cameras have this problem? I own the Sony a7iii and also have the a6500 and the a6000 - I have never noticed a problem and didn't realize that the screens are covered with proprietary protectors. I will be more careful with cleaning!

No, I think they solved it soon after the A7 II generation - at least I’ve not heard any widespread reports. A6000 most likely to see it of the cameras you mentioned. Cleaning isn’t the issue, I think it is a degradation of the glue that was used that caused it to lift slight away from the surface causing a bubbling/scuffed effect that is most noticeable around the edges. I believe that 3rd party screen protectors are available for later generation cameras
