For a number of months, the LCD screen on my Sony A7R II has been deteriorating quite badly with what appeared to be numerous scratches and buffed marks. Whilst in Japan, I decided to fix the problem by removing the thin plastic layer of the original LCD screen and replacing it with a third party LCD screen protector.
Amazingly, the plan worked and the results are amazing! My Sony A7R II no longer has a damaged looking screen and has been restored to its original beauty!
I've seen many other Sony cameras with damaged screens online, including the original Sony A7 series, Sony A6000, A6300 and A6500 among others. If your screen has been damaged in the same way mine was, I'd recommend following the steps in this video to easily fix your damaged sony screen!

Joe...THANK YOU 1,000,000 times for this tutorial. I had no idea that my A7ii came stock with a screen protector. I was so bummed when I thought that I had scratched up the actual LCD screen. After watching your tutorial, I used a super sharp blade, took my time, removed the stock screen protector, and put a new one over my LCD. It now looks like it did when I bought the camera brand new 2 years ago. Thank you again!!! David

this video is a lifesaver! i just took the glass protector off my a7ii because it was all chipped and cracked and was horrified to see my actual screen all delaminated and destroyed. i thought the screen was ruined. I found this video and was so relieved to find out that i did have that crappy plastic cover over the original glass. now its removed and a new protector on and i am back in business!! thank you so much!

@@alwynvarghese8380 yup! My screen was what I thought gone, small patches of missing plastic that would not show up in certain lighting, got a shape knife peeled corners & LITERALLY, brand new screen underneath. Hope this helps It did for me

I've had the exact same problem with my a7 for the longest time and didn't understand how it got so dirty since I'm extremely careful with mine as well. Thought i would have to eventually do a screen replacement, but will definitely have to try and replace the protector after seeing this video. Thanks so much Joe!!

Sony screen is just insane. I bought the screen protector sold by Sony the same time I bought the camera, that protected my screen well but also scratched a bit over time, so I decided to peel that off and get a new one. Just between the short period of time my screen got huge white scratches like yours. I thought that's a permanent damage, thank you Joe, that seems fixable. I just wonder if Sony does not put that plasticky layer but the screen protector they sale separately, it should be much less trouble! Little scratches over time is much, much, much better than a once thought unfixable huge white scratch.

I bought a used camera which looked exatly like that. For me a microfibre cloth and some isopropyl alcohol did the trick just fine. It seems to be just some kind of residue on there.

I tried your method on my old NEX-5 whose screen looked like the screen on the video. I used a spectacle and lens wipe containing alcohol. The residue, as it does appear to be, gradually rubbed off. Thanks.

Yeah have a A6000 too, but after the first scratch (luckily on the frame), i bought the protective sticker, and problem solved.

2:23 I laughed out loudly when you were saying "Works amazingly well on the bullet trains"... That icon shows it has a round edges around the protector so you won't feed the sharp when touching the edges of the protector

Thanks for this, Joe. Like others, I had camera shops tell me it can't be done. My Nex-6 doesn't to stills any longer as it has the "camera error" message that so many fell prey to, but it still does video. Being able to use the screen again has made it useful for B-Roll again.

Thanks Joe. Like many others I wasn't aware there was already a plastic cover in place and mine (A7RII) looked like yours did. Found a kit on Amazon et voila - screen looks like new again. No sign of even the slightest blemish on my 5 year old Canon 5DII screen so Sony still have some areas to catch-up on :)

You sir are a genius! The blemished screen on my RX100 II has been bothering me for years and I had no idea it was a plastic film . I've just removed it like you did and, voila, perfecto! As I use the leather case with the camera, I'm thinking of not adding another protective screen because I know I'll attach it badly and end up with bubbles etc. MASSIVE thanks for the heads up!

No worries! Glad it worked out for you, although I would still recommend a protective film. The factory set one is there to protect the bare screen, albeit a very poor quality one compared to other brands that use glass etc. If you damage that, there’s no going back.

I bought a used RX100 which had the same issue with the lcd screen. The screen looked terrible, therefore the guy sold it very cheap. I pealed off the layer when I got home and put on a new protection layer. Now it looks like new :-)

Thank you! I just bought a used Sony A7Rii and has the same problem. I was quoted it would be nearly $200+ for the screen including labor for replacing entire screen. I was willing to do it my self, the screen alone cost like $40 USD. Good to know now that I can just peel and replace with film cover.

Thank you, Joe, for showing this could be done. I used the Sony glass made for the A7Rii. Glass and adhesive were very good. Sony recommend adhering a short edge first and working across. It covered the active screen area but was nearly a mm shy of the frame on one side so not as elegant as it should be, given it was 3 times the cost of generic glass screens.

Glad to see it works. I own A mount bodies, the a77 (2 each), a850 and a a900 and so far no peeling but I put screen protectors on the body the day I opened the retail boxes. I'm assuming this will work with the a99 and a99II? Every A mount body on eBay has peeling lcd screens.

Hey thanks alot! Last may I bought a used a7r II and while the top layer protection screen is mostly ok, the odd bubble/ scratch look is appearing on the edges of around the screen, so its not too bad that I feel the need to replace it now, but in future it's good to know that I can actually remove that plastic film. I'm glad sony included a screen protector with them, didn't get that on my old canon system.

i think i had issues rushing taking it off at the end there, it left some glue and i was way to scared to try to get it off. i just left it, it dosent bother but the glass wont go on straight. either way thumbs up you got me through it

I'm curious about the white rectangle in the monitor at 6:53. How is that activated? I can't see it in the menus. BTW I've used a PCK-LM15 screen protector from day one and haven't seen the damage you display in the video.

I had no idea Sony cameras come with screen protectors! I actually bought another screen protector and put it right on the screen... Thank you for the tip! Also, just want to leave an interesting bit of info: I can read Chinese characters, so if the Kanji is the same as what it means in Chinese, the first icon should mean the screen protector allows more than 95% of light from the screen to pass through. The fingerprint icon literally says "fingerprint stops", which probably means the screen protector prevents fingerprint marks being left on it. Hope it helps anyone who gets this screen protector to appreciate it even more =)

I didn't realize there was a stock plastic film over the screen. I wonder if that is part of the reason that the Sony rear screens are the murkiest and least sharp screens I've ever seen. Did you notice any increased sharpness when you replaced that plastic with glass?

After replacing it, it definitely felt much clearer and brighter, though I'm not sure if I'd say it appeared sharper, if that helps?

Yep, it was on there at the time of purchase, not as an extra accessory. From other people in the comments, I think it's quite common across most other Sony cameras.

Sony A77 mkii Had a 3rd party screen cover from new, I thought that was why my screen looked like crap underneath some sort of reaction.. I saw this the other day and this morning I was good to go! Very scary as all four edges refused to peal, hands shaking lets go for broke. Job done as you say be careful and take time removing. So simple my screen looks like it just came out of the box! So, what you are saying is that Sony cameras come with a screen protector already on them, albeit a shitty one. I always put one of these on my fujis and olympuses. On my Sonys I didn't realize I was actually just stacking one on top of one that was already there.

It looks to me like the anti-reflective coating has worn off of the protector where your face has been rubbing against it. Apple had the same issue with some of their macbook retina screens... albeit not quite so pronounced as most people were not rubbing their faces against those!

Yeah, it does look like that, though oddly it hasn't happened with any of my other cameras, even more to the tale is that I actually rarely hold this camera to my face. I use it mostly for filming and often from lower angles, using the screen rather than viewfinder...
