Sikaflex and Mor-flexx caulking.
I used Sikaflex first as the membrane was torn and very deep. Sikaflex caulking is stronger than Mor-flex, but I did want a sandy finish hence the Mor-flex on top.
Quikrete also makes caulking with sand, which is just as good as Mor-flex.
This is another way to repair a large structural crack in a cement stucco wall with Sikaflex 1A polyurethane caulking, then Mor-Flxx caulking with sand, or throw some stucco sand in it.
The video here explains a similar way of repairing structural cracks.
• Expanding foam or back... Structural large cracking on stucco walls, no problem.
How to fix a huge crack in stucco.
Fix a large structural crack with polyurethane caulking. Note that this caulking is a real drag to work with as it’s far from water-soluble or can be cleaned up with water.
This professional-grade caulking is a powerful adhesive sealant capable of adhering even porous bricks together.
How do I know this fact?
I repaired a brick retaining wall that a car hit for my neighbor, and today, 20 years later, kids are still walking on it.
This caulking ain’t engineered or designed for being user-friendly or applied pretty, but instead, it’s the king or, as they say, these days, the goat of caulking.
The crack shown here is structural, meaning it will always move.
I feel it’s best to use a flexible material under the circumstances.
There are about 20 different methods to repair this crack; however, this is what I would do if it were my home.

I have installed sealants professionally for 40 years and I was prepared tell you all the things you are doing wrong but it kinda makes sense. I didn’t see how you cleaned the joint but it appeared you cleaned it pretty well. The one thing I might have done different is tool the urethane to make sure it was bonded to the sides of the joint before adding the textured sealant

It’s an alternative to my sikaflex polyurethane caulking. Hey Kirk, we have a crack in the wall similar to that one and we were thinking of using sika Mortar Fix to try and seal the crack. It has similar properties to that of sikaflex and is a polyurethane caulk. Would you say it is a good idea?

Hi Kirk, I’ve been watching your videos lately like it’s my full-time job. I still don’t think things fully stick so I keep re-watching to get pieces I’ve missed. I have a wall on my small ranch home where the painted stucco top-coat has separated. I was quoted 3,500 to fix it and there really aren’t a lot of stucco experts around my area to choose from. I did some exploration and pulled away all the loose stucco. I power washed, applied weld-Crete, and then got some rapid set stucco mix and tried to put on a layer of stucco, being careful to feather in the edges. (We don’t have any rapid set stucco patch here). I didn’t realize I wasn’t doing it right. I probably only needed to do a skim coat and then attempt a Spanish lace texture. The texture on my house is very uniform and I think it might be 20/30 sand. I bought some quickrete finish coat to do the skim coat once I’m ready. Anyways, I wasn’t happy with what I did, and tried to remove it enough that I could do a skim coat over it and try to make it look somewhat decent. I bought a rotary hammer and tried to take it off as much of the stucco I’d previously put on like I’ve seen done when you remove stucco in videos, but because I used weld-Crete, that stuff was on amazingly well. I ended up putting about 3 or 4 holes in my wall and I could see the stucco wire. I power washed the wall again and brushed out any loose debri I could from the holes. Despite brushing well, I still don’t think the holes were as dust free as the surface stucco was. I added some polyurethane Sikaflex to the holes but I’m worried that because it wasn’t as dust-free as I would like, it won’t provide that water resistant seal. Should I have done something differently to prepare the holes to get them completely dust free? Will that matter if I can’t get it as dust free for the caulk as I would like? Thank you
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, Farrah, you had a lot of work to do, "Rapid set stucco" has large sand '16/20," that matches most stucco finishes, I would have recommended the USA green core from HD as the sand is much smaller. "20/30' and therefore much easier to apply. Sorry, you had to go through this, but this means you are an exceptional woman to continue trying. What is your phone number I will call, I don't give my personal number out for obvious reasons however your seams an exception. cheers.

Great information. My neighbour has a crack on his chimney exterior where the chimney tapers sideways (about the height of the inside mantel). The jumbo brick has moved enough to cause the stucco to crack open at the corner. It looks like the brick has moved about 1/4". If I really tried, I could move that brick but I'd like to fill the hole and seal it off again without disturbing the stucco anymore. I may be able to tap it back tighter too? What would be the best product to lock the bricks together as much as possible?

Howdy Wm S Dude, excellent question, that's the toughest texture to macth unless the original person left a bucket of the aggregates in the basement or cellar, which is unlikely. I have stuccoed a home over 25 years ago where we applied the brown coat with hanson white cement plaster and before it dried you throw on your chosen aggregates, seashells, glass colored pebbles, or whatever strikes your fancy. it is really difficult to find all the different aggregates especially if the home is over 50 years old, I have tried twice and spun my wheels as you need the exact same pieces. Best wishes as you have your job cut out for you. Hey Kirk, when finishing a patch like this, how do you match the color? I have an old house with an attached porch, all stuccoed in a heavy lace style, with a buff/beige color similar to house in this video. My stucco is not painted though. There are a few old structural cracks in the front porch walls that someone repaired before with some kind of grey caulking, like you did in step 1 in the video. But they didn't float & feather a top coat. I want to touch these up & blend them into the rest of the stucco, but also match the color.

Would the best way to close this gap be the method you used in this video (sikaflex with mor-flexx)? Howdy and happy Easter Fastrice, absolutely, what happens if you fill a large crack and the next day or say two dads later shrinks and is sucked in? Nothing, you just add a bit more if this happens. Most caulking will shrink if the crack is deeper or wider than 3/8. Many cracks are wider than this so when this happens, don't panic just add more. how long does this repair last? for some cases after a few months the cracks resurfaces, what can be done to repair the cracks permanently?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
Howdy Olufemi, the determination of length of time depends on the individual movement to each home or building. When it rains as a rule the ground expands, thus a home will lift, when drier condition return the home will settle, thus cracking can and will occur. Plus the sun heat will expand the wood, thus causing the stucco to bulge, thus when cool, the movement or vibrations cause the same effect. There are about 15 more reasons but that would take me too long to write out, plus I have many videos where I explain most common reasons why stucco cracks. @@StuccoPlastering Im not trolling, I work with the sealant industry. Sealants only work when they are properly profiled and have 2 points of contact. They should look roughly hour glass shaped. The backer rod is not "Useless" it created the concave profile on the back of the sealant. Its a critical and often overlooked portion of a proper sealant detail. I have a question about what you're saying starting at 3:30. The word "planning" confuses me. Are you saying that you **could** have filled the crack with caulk and then covered it with stucco, but you didn't because that stucco would crack again soon over this dynamic crack? Whereas in another video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/roWlY4Wud8l-faM), you did cover the caulk with stucco because it was a static crack. My stucco has a moderate dash surface.. So far I've done well matching texture over static crack repairs but am faced with structural cracks now and I guess I need to work the caulk-on-caulk approach you took to simulate a dash look. Many thanks for your public service efforts. So far I have about 12 of your videos bookmarked as they've helped me repair many specific problems on my historic old house. The oddest problem I've repaired? Someone re-stucco'd OVER parts of a downspout and its straps. I imagine you've seen worse.
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe O'Connor, without viewing my own video, I will say there are many ways to fix a structural crack. I am implying to just fill it with stucco is the easiest, but far from the best as when a structural crack moves again and it will, as it's structural in the first place, the stucco will simply crack with it. (for me structural means when it rains plus a bunch more reason, the area or wall will lift then when dryer conditions occur, settle, thus structural) If a polyurethane caulking if used first and the texture can't be matched with that caulking a person cam apply a stucco with sand to match a texture using stucco on top of all this caulking, Is a bonding agent necessary? Depends, If the caulking is allowed to set and or dry, yes a bonding agent would now be necessary to adhere the new stucco to this area, if added while the caulking is still curing is a bit tricky as can it affect the integrity of the caulking? Good question, yes. But for a temporary fix, say 15 years, it is an intelligent alternative for keeping the rain water out to the alternative of tearing the wall apart and trying to locate why the walls is moving and or separating. Cheers, kirk giordano plastering

Just keep one thing in mind, stucco by itself meaning stucco the final finish is a cosmetic finish and has very little strength as it's only applies 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. The real strength comes from the Lath (Stucco Netting, Rib lath, Diamond mesh, etc.) and the Scratch and Brown coat cement which makes up most of the thickness of the wall system. An example of using just stucco by itself would be to apply stucco directly to brick or cinder block without applying a floated brown coat finish. This usually results in uneven suction, cracking and stucco not bonding well to the surface. That kind of shit work is done by guys that either don't know any better or just take peoples money and shortcut the job .

I'm a plasterer by trade with over years experience but now I teach martial arts part time and do construction part time. I agree with you in the fact that not everyone will want to pay the money to do a more extensive repair. Here's how I'd tackle that repair: (not saying your method doesn't work as my not familiar with your final sealant to say it would work or it wouldn't work) 1st I'd fill the crack with some Urethane sealant such as Quad or PL. I like Quad better as it has better flow. 2nd I'd fill the crack with the Urethane sealant but not quite fill it up all the way. So the sealant gives it some give for those strong internal movements. I'd let the Urethane dry up a day or more. 3rd I'd fill up the rest of the gap with a very sticky cement mix using Rapid Set and a good Acrylic Polymer Bonding agent as an admix to the cement. I would completely fill the crack and swipe a thin layer of cement over the top. 4th thing: Let it dry up a bit, spray some water over it with a spray bottle and float out with a Green Float. This way you get 2 things: The elasticity from the Urethane sealant and the strength of the Rapid Set cement with the bonding agent which I should ad that it's much stronger than just plain cement once you mix in your bonder. Very strong with cured! The more expensive way of course is to just tear back the crack, inspect for water damage, apply new 60 min paper if necessary, then expanded metal lath for stronger wire. I should also mention as you already know, a slipping structure would pretty much crack any stucco, masonry, or concrete. Notice that Roller coasters are either built with steel or wood because they have the most Flex. Only the structural supports would you see concrete. I enjoyed watching your video. Nice job!
