WD-40 is petroleum based and can degrade rubber or plastic. Just fyi. Not safe for all applications. WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner however should be safe to use (in most cases!) on electronics and PCBs.

Great video... But, I really have to say this.. Please, anyone who tries/does this repair, do not use pliers as a 'universal' spanner - Never actually! Remove the volume control with a 10mm socket and the bass/tone knob with a 7/16' socket. Also try not to use a really small flat-tip screw driver as it will damage the housing as you can see in the vid with any part. Using a plastic wedge/spudger is all you need. The volume knob is tricky but if you do need to use a metal item, wedge a rag in the same time with the flat tip (minimum 5mm wide tip and thin if possible) which will prevent damage. Lucky you don't need to remove the power button but you should depress it first before trying to remove the PCB as this will make it easier to slide out and yes as he noted, make sure the power is off and unplugged! There will still be a bit of charge left in the caps when you unplug it so, turn it on then, back off again (unplugged) as you will see the light go on then off which discharges any short that may occur if you need to solder or just in general. Dis-connect the stereo jack too if you haven't already. My volume control was actually faulty since new and never took it back as I was lazy and/or forgot as the potentiometer was never clamped together properly but cleaning it helped until it starts crackling again where I will have to replace it. Only about $5AUD so I am not worried or I will make an external control unit using optical making it surround with a remote as this system is very bassy and amazing! Cheers!

I Have the same issue with the power button, the crackle is visualised in the led flickering and sometimes losing sound from the left or both speakers. I would say also apply the lubricant to the power knob?
@LegendaryHorse30752 жыл бұрын
Lube will not fix the power issue! This may be a cause in the power cable itself or a dry-joint on the PCB (Solder separation [rare]). Both speakers losing sound highly indicate a bad stereo jack connection from PC or where-ever you have it connected but, if you are losing sound, the ON/Off light is flickering AND you are getting cracking at the same time from any adjustment then, it most certain likely to be a loose wire in the PCB connector or earth wire. IF it is cutting on and off randomly without touching anything, then this may likely be a loose connection in the subwoofer housing. These are just some of the most common issues I have worked with and found. Good luck if you are still having this issue and Happy new year!

@LegendaryHorse30752 жыл бұрын
@@TsjernoKid Real easy to do where the only difficult parts is to remove the volume knob and being cautious around the wiring. The (black) earth wire is permanently soldered in which was barely hanging on with my system so I just removed it and re-soldered making it heaps easier to clean everything. The main (white) JST plug is glued into the adapter but can be removed easily once the glue has been peeled off but be very careful as the wires in that plug are a nightmare to fix if you pull one of them out! Good luck :)

I think DeOxit F5 is the most widely used cleaner for potentiometers? You could also try WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner or CRC's contact cleaner solution? You can find them at most any hardware store or auto parts store. But you may want to research to make certain they are safe for cleaning pots. I would advise against standard WD-40, even though many here claim to have used it successfully. WD-40 is petroleum based and can be harmful to plastic and rubber components over time. It also leaves a film and isn't as fast to dry as contact cleaner is.

@Gaetano.942 жыл бұрын
I really don't know what it would be doing. Do you also think that Ronald McDonald lives in the Golden Arches?
@senselessconsensus Жыл бұрын
That's simply a partner brand printed on an air port. THX is a stamp of quality assurance in multimedia, and it has nothing to do with the parts used to build the product. They test for reproduction standards, ensuring your movie sound is reproduced as accurately as possible. They test acoustics, and building architecture can also be branded THX certified. It is definitely not a scam, you want your products and services to be THX certified. It's a stamp of approval in the industry.
@CandleMan511 ай бұрын
@@senselessconsensus You completely missed my point there. Speaker looks like a two way speaker = general speaker + discant speaker. However, it has only one full range element and what looks like a discant speaker is only a holder for plastic logo.
@senselessconsensus11 ай бұрын
@@CandleMan5 Oh, I see now, it's hiding a screw. I never thought it was anything important, but at the very least I assumed it was a hole. I never watched the whole video because I already know how to fix them without taking them apart. You made it sound like THX was assumed to be either the part it's printed on or some other electrical element. I don't think they would need the smaller speaker you thought it was, since the frequency profile of the main should suffice. The kind of tweeter you're looking for is typical of 6-8 inch monitors. These satellites are too small to require crossover compensation. But I understand what you mean by it looking like one. That's pretty typical of audio products tv's cars etc. Just be glad they aren't trying to attract younger customers with rainbow colors. The real question now would be: how did he know it was hiding a screw? Plenty of scratches though.. Also, I don't think you're using that term correctly, I've never heard of a "discant" speaker nor are there any results from a search. The word means a voice above or removed from others and usually spelled descant, which is accurate, but in the states we call them tweeters or horns depending on the size.

This happens with all audio knobs. I can't believe you opened it and took all that time to work on the inside. This problem will show up every year or so from dust, and you don't need chemicals to fix it. Not to mention, chemicals could eventually make the problem worse and reduce the life of the potentiometer. You just need to turn the knob slowly all the way from left to right and back again about twenty times while the system is off. The dust inside will then be pushed to the ends eliminating loud pops while in use.
