In this episode, we share with you how to fix steering wobble or 4wd death wobble. The vibration & shaking of Land Rover Defender are well-known. Steering wheel vibration & steering wheel shaking can be very dangerous. But you must know that this kind of car shaking is for any solid axle vehicle.

About Off-Track Family:
We are a family of 4 with 2 children. We are overlanding for years now on wild tracks in our Land Rover Defender 110.
Our expedition vehicle is a Land Rover Defender camper conversion. Some people say it’s more like a bug out vehicle but for us it’s the perfect 4wd off-road tourer with best 4x4 camping set-up.
We bought this 4wd rig brand-new in 2009 and the engine is the 2.4tdci Puma version. We transformed it time after time in a real overland 4x4 touring camper and it’s now a perfect off-grid truck for wild camping, bivouac or simply as an overlanding Defender.
We love enjoying time in nature and exploring the world as a family.

Nous sommes une famille de 4 dont 2 enfants. Nous voyageons depuis des années sur les pistes dans notre Land Rover Defender 110.
Notre véhicule d’expédition est un Defender aménagé. Certains le décrivent plus comme un véhicule de survie mais pour nous c’est le parfait compromis d’aménagement 4x4 et tout-terrain pour le camping.
Nous avons acheté ce véhicule neuf en 2009 et sa motorisation est un TD4 2.4tdci Puma. Nous l’avons transformé jour après jour en un parfait tout terrain de camping 4x4 et il nous permet d’être autonomes lors d’un bivouac, d’un voyage 4x4 ou simplement lors d’un voyage en famille.
Nous adorons passer du temps dans la nature et explorer les pistes sauvages du monde entier en famille.

Indeed, very good advice, got the "wobble: after driving my 110 Tdi since 2003. Changed bent rims to a new deeper offset (with tubes) and hit a pothole and there is the wobble again, thought bent rims were the initial cause. The main reason is if that there is any upset in dynamic equilibrium of the wheel which is very heavy and has a high mass moment of , it sustains this new equilibrium in a way that we commonly know as death wobble. i.e a new dynamic planes of equilibrium are set up manifesting as death wobble (drop a lid on counter effect). Unworn suspension and steering parts damp this out quickly, worn parts allow it to get worse. Plan of action: 1a: balance your wheels, if bent, replace, old General SAG's amongst others have hidden faults that only manifest at higher angular velocities, i.e internal delamination and so on. 1b: Track rod and drag link ball joints replace (mine worn), 2: replace all britpart bushes (soft) with Polyurethane bushes all through the front end with emphasis on panhard arm and steering damper. Radius arm bushes thereafter. Wheel bearing service par for the course. Leave your swivel pins alone, maybe remove one shim on very high mileage vehicles like mine, don't be conned. Wheel balance also standard operating procedure....with clean rims (repeated for emphasis). Tube tyres (7.5R16's) need some care. Just had my Defender steering wobble resolved. Another potential cause as it was with my Defender was a build up of dirt and grease behind the wheel spacer. Once cleaned out all was sorted. That said, your video was really helpful and helped me think about the problem in a logical manner. As with all your videos they are great quality and well reasoned advice. Keep them coming.

I was surprised by this awful wobble when I bought my used TDci Defender. Expected a mechanical issue. In the end, the problem was, it had damaged, worn tyres (out of shape). A new set of BFG KO2 tyres got me rid of the wobble.

Yes that's why we said in the video to check the tyres first. In most of cases it comes from poor balancing or just worn tyres. Thanks a lot for your feedback!

I have now replaces all the relevant bushes, but still have a vibration at 60mph. New tyres are next on the list.

One of my fellow land rover buddies had a death wobble. In his case it was panhard rod bushes. If you replace with polybushes they are 2 piece an can replace them on the road, apparently.

Hi. Enjoyed your video thanks. Other factors making it worse can be tyre force variation ( difference in sidewall “springyness” as wheel rotates - could be low quality tyres or tyres that “flat spotted” due to standing in same position for a long tome, or damage) Wheel offset far from standard also makes it worse ( wheel spacers, high offset wheelrims) Enjoy your travels!

OTF. Only purchase 'Terrafirma' brand products if they're available dearest ? If your Defender 110 has a suspension lift, "Old Man Emu" castor correction rubber bushes are a must to reduce wear on the steering & a return to centre damper ! V.

I had a mildly lifted Nissan patrol which would death wobble after hitting bumps at speeds over 80 klm/hr (50 mph). It was so violent that it would tear the steering wheel out of my hands if not gripped really tightly. The whole car would also shake very violently. I guessed that there was some similar vibration rate between the whole car and the steering geometry, so I fitted wider front wheels to match the wider back ones Apart from the extra weight, this also increased the track width at the front, which would change the natural frequency of the steering. It completely solved the problem.

Although it wasn't quite death level wobble, changing the steering damper made a big difference on my Jeep

Yes we also changed our steering damper first, right after tyre balancing, but sometimes it seems like replacing the steering damper with a new one doesn't really solve the real problem but only reducing it or hiding it. Was it the case on your jeep or does this wobble totaly disappeared?

I don’t have no steering wobbles, but the front wheels (I don’t know if mine is a wobble) judder when I’m turning corners, worst when I’m doing U Turn.

Death wobble or steering wobble usually occur at high speed. Should be good to check your issue with a mechanic if you cannot point out the problem 👍

Panhard rod bushes at the front. Were they changed? My experience was the rubber ones flogged out especially if you do bery hard articulating days off road. If they are little worn out one session off road can finish them. Superpro are prob the best in my opinion

Absolutely! They were changed earlier when we went for the Tough Dog one but the steering wobble did remain. We solved this issue by replacing our radius arms bushes.

I got death wobbles & went through and replaced every bush in my 350xxx kms defender 110, 1 component at a time, the wobble was less but still there, new front wheel bearings next, wobbles still there. I had a new recently replaced Ashcroft gearbox , uni joints and tail shaft too, so not likely to be those either. New BFG tyres finally fixed it. 8 months later death wobbles are back again. My 8 month old panhard bushes are stuffed so I've just ordered a new set and dropped off the wheels for balance check.

This wobble is very annoying! As you did it's best to go part by part. Let us know if your problem is solved after changing those bushes. Did you choose a special brand to replace them?

I used OEM Land Rover bushes last time, since those only lasted 8 months I've ordered the same as you, Super Pro. My 110 is our Marine Construction Kitchen/Lunchroom, it's driven on Beaches alot, BFG tyres are deflated daily down to as low as 7 psi on soft sand, it goes down rocks tracks not meant for any vehicle ever on a daily basis too here in Australia. So it must be kept in tip tip condition.

I fitted cheap poly bushes to my old defender and had to replace them in less than a year, again and again. It is not worth buying cheap bushings for these trucks, get Super-Pro... which I think you have?

Merci pour cette vidéo 👍 A l’achat de mon Defender, j’ai eu ce soucis. A l’époque, avec les roues d’origines (roues fines) il n’y avait aucun soucis, par contre dès que je mettait un jeu de roues plus large, le Def tremblait comme dans votre vidéo avec parfois un Death wooble. J’ai cru à un équilibrage des roues, un problème sur les jantes et finalement après le changement des silents bloc de tirant de pont avant et de barre panhard, tout est rentré dans l´ordre. Plusieurs années après, je change les pneus par des Bf tout neuf et le garage qui me les a vendu (pourtant spécialiste pneu poids lourd) a été incapable de les équilibrer. Death Wooble hyper important et dangereux, j’ai du les faire équilibrer ailleurs. Comme quoi ces soucis de vibrations peuvent venir de beaucoup de choses et qu’il est important de procéder méthodiquement et point par point comme vous le mentionnez.

Sur mon Def j'ai cherché un moment jusqu'à ce que je démonte tout pour vérification. J'ai fini par trouvé le problème, un défaut d'usinage d'une fusée du train avant. Fusée d'origine hors cote de 0.35 mm au diamètre au niveau de la portée des roulements à rouleaux Timken. Montage d'une fusée neuve (à la bonne cote) et plus de problème .

First thing to check is the swivel pin pre-load...it´s the most common fault for death wobble.

Thanks for adding this to the list! Must already be quite skilled & have the tools to check this alone. In our experience, this didn't change anything to our wobble problem and it was the bushes the issue. But this can be different for everybody. The most important is to check one thing at a time :)

As it wears with mileage... Don't rely on the workshop manual values... Put more torque on those values...
