Over 200,000 people per year are treated for diverticulitis, a painful condition in which small pouches in the colon, called diverticula, become infected. Symptoms of diverticulitis include nausea, fever, chills, loss of appetite, and constipation. While conventional medicine treatments for diverticulitis usually consist of antibiotics and surgery, Functional Medicine looks at a wide variety of things like microbiome diversity, dietary fiber consumption, gut health, inflammation, and more, to both prevent and treat this condition.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses diverticulitis with Dr. George Papanicolaou. They talk about how lifestyle habits, such as a low fiber diet and elevated stress, can contribute to diverticulitis. They also share certain foods and supplements that are supportive and healing to the body.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness.” Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health-a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens.

Thanks Doc. For this. I am a DC, my wife just had emergency surgery diverticulitis a few weeks ago. Asking the surgeon, why did this happen..."it's unclear" as to why, maybe dehydration. It was what you mentioned, bacteria throughout the lower abdomen. In any event, an extremely bad and life changing event. This info was fantastic. I will begin my functional medicine cert training. Thanks!!!

Everyone talks about what to eat. Noone talks though about intermittent fasting, long fasting, cycling between keto & carb eating, perfecting deep sleep etc. There are dozens of components to restoring back some of your lost health.

There is a ton of literature out there that suggest you do not need as much fiber as we thought you need. If you’re healthy eating whole foods more of a ketogenic/carnivore diet people do just fine with very little fiber. There’s literature and tens of thousands of people as antidotes to say otherwise. Love your channel. I’m not convinced with high amounts of fiber in your diet.

I do not think things need to be treated differently. People need to change their diet period! I love Dr.Hyman but Dr. Berg makes everything so simple. I been around the block too many times with too many people with my health. Eat right and stay away from sugar and cut your carbs. Eat whole organic foods, etc.

How do feel about Arnicare gel to manage pain?
@kellio8087

My sister just went through 5 days of horrible pain. In and out of the hospital for several days. They did a sigmoidoscopy and found impaction and diverticulitis. What's crazy is, a doctor told her that people don't realize that they get enough fiber from their diets. What??? If my sister had been getting enough fiber in her diet, perhaps she wouldn't have gotten an impaction. They had to do a sigmoidoscopy to get the impaction out. That's how bad it was. If doctors don't know how to advise about nutrition properly, they shouldn't say anything.

I’m currently experiencing pain in my lower left side of my abdomen but I noticed when I eat more fiber it gets worse. I ate some blackberries recently and felt like I was dying, so I went to the hospital. I had a cat scan and they said they didn’t see anything, so what else could it be ?

@stacey0414
@stacey0414 2 жыл бұрын
Try blending the flax seeds before adding; add hot water to swell the seed contents ...allows oils etc to release and absorb the water. Do not add too much water, though enough too allow then mixing with your oats. The consistency is amazing how the seed's oils help create what then benefits your body. Just try it and see. The flax on their own may just be an irritation as whole seed, plus as whole, they pass through and have limited nutritional value as our bodies cannot break the seed hull. Guess it's how seeds in nature manage to get spread by birds and other animals without being digested. ...so definitely try blitzing in a high spin blender. It will help digestive movement while benefiting the omega content.

I've tried it and I will say my mental clarity, alertness, and energy were phenomenal. The key IMO is quality meat. It's expensive when buying from a butcher or farm weekly. Some people have chosen to buy a whole or half of a cow for the year. Personally I did not need the fruits and vegetables for normal digestion and elimination but, I did miss them. I think that way of eating for me is good for a short period of time. That's just my experience.

@warrennicholl1382 2 жыл бұрын
@@shansbo217 I agree that it could be beneficial if used for a short period of time, especially if starting a weight loss program, because it is the ultimate low carb diet, or at certain periods during, such as one would do an extended fast. However, I'm not sure how good it would be long-term as it seems meat and animal products do not provide fiber and certain vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants that plant foods provide.
