Good discussion and I love the FMD diet, but when you, Peter, say the Prolon product isn't very expensive, and we'd probably be spending $200 on food that week anyway (minute 31), I have to wonder what planet you're living on. I'm reasonably well off but because I don't eat out much or drink a lot of alcohol, and I buy whole foods and prepare/cook them, even though what I eat is all organically produced I spend the equivalent of around $30 to $50 a week on food, and I'm living in the UK. The Prolon diet seems extremely expensive for what it is (some powders, some crackers, some olives, some teas, just enough to keep body and soul together for five days). Yes, I know we early takers were paying for the research that went into development of the diet, but the product has not changed in the last few years number one, and number two, if the manufacturers were to offer Prolon at half the price they'd have so many more sales that they'd make more money than they do now. I, for one, would do the diet three times a year if that were the case. As it is, I don't feel I can justify doing it even once a year, especially since the food isn't even organic. If the folks at Prolon have any investment in improving the health-span of the general populace, they should cut the price of the product.

Why wouldn't you want to promote your product to help humanity out knowing that it's actually going to help people rather than hinder them like big pharmaceutical companies do. I don't understand why some people in this comment section are downing this man for promoting his protocol to actually help people.

I am somewhat disappointed that PROLON is advertised so much in this talk - I used it (not diabetic or pre-diabetic, just insulin resistant) and never felt hungrier (did water fast etc. before). Since I was wearing a continuous blood glucose monitor out of interest I could see the PROLON meals spiked my blood sugar worse than my regular (SAD) diet. And btw. in my country (Germany) PROLON is very expensive and costs are not taken over by any insurance.

Water fasting works better and it's easier and has stronger effects. After 2 days hunger goes away and you feel extremely well. In the FMD if you put something in your mouth you gonna feel hungry all the time because you are not full of course. Water fasting is the best but great research by Longo, now we know what is going on during fasting, Kudos to him!!!

given that the diet is basically 1/2 fat and 1/2 carbohydrates, w a smidge of protein and no animal products, seems possible to replicate. Kind bars have the same mix as his prolon bars for a tiny fraction of the cost, for example
@KM-vc7iy
@KM-vc7iy Ай бұрын
The low protein high carb intake that Longo recommends wont help someone who is prediabetic or someone that already has diabetes as the carbs are only going to spike their blood sugar to unhealthy levels. Infact a high protein low carb approach is the right type of diet for these individuals.

A high-protein, zero carb/fiber ketogenic diet reduced my IGF1, from 157 to 90. 157 -200 igf1, was autoimmune paleo diet (meat & veg.), with IF. 90 igf1, was high fat carnivore. Both diets, protein intake was the same - 150g -250g/day. I think there’s a lot more parallels to IGF and fasting insulin IN HUMANS, then what’s discussed here. Nothing increases insulin or MTOR more, and for longer than carbohydrates, (See Ben Bikman). Maybe high carbs + high protein is best to increase igf1 (Bodybuilding diet). Just my .02. as a 47yo athletic male with autoimmune issues.

This guy (nolanwardy) is special. Look at the quality of the comment. Cudos to you for helping the community learn. I agree as a person/ medical doc who’s struggled with obesity - lose / gain - constantly. Fasting doesn’t work if done longer months years. It appears cycling is crucial for me. Carnivore worked amazing but then stopped, 6 meals a day salad and chicken worked and stopped after 2 years. So something is still missing in the story.

That's factually incorrect. Protein is the main driver of IGF-1, and specifically some amino acids (leucine, serine, possibly methionine and isoleucine). Carbs can raise mTor, but nowhere near as much. When research on low calorie or dietary restriction was done, it didn't work unless protein was restricted. Simply, calorie restriction doesn't work as well as specifically lowering protein. Getting rid of autoimmune problems by going keto is likely due to eliminating many troublesome foods. Eating animal muscle and mother's milk isn't healthy, especially for autoimmune problems which are your body's immune response to foreign proteins. For building muscle, it is true that IGF-1 and mTor are important, as it AKT and p70S6k. Adequate carbs around workouts and away from them do have a positive effect, as does well-timed protein. Speaking of which, the amounts touted for hypertrophy are incorrect. If using MRI to measure muscle changes and not DEXA (which is inaccurate), then the true amount needed is around 1.2g / kg of bodyweight per day. For the same reason, by the way, creatine is overrated. It has little effect long-term, despite the thousands of studies saying the opposite, all using incorrect measures of muscle mass. To gain muscle you need excellent exercise selection, push to the limit, eat well (protein around twice or three times per day max). And do it fast, build muscle quick, then cut back on everything as it's easy to maintain. I've built 50 pounds of muscle on a plant-based diet, never going above 120 grams of protein a day, and usually around 90. Then maintained it all on 60 grams per day. Full-body workout every third or fourth day. Our body either thrives and dies early, or maintains moderately for a long time. I wish you all the best with health and training.

And to clarify, I agree that cutting sugary 'free' carbs is a good idea. Carbs bound within foods to nutrients and fibre are beneficial. Lower-carb keto diets are never found in long-living populations. That's pretty damning evidence. Fibre itself is so beneficial that to reduce it is crazy. Fruits like berries are nutritional superstars, even though the trendy thing is to say 'superfoods don't exist.' I'd also add that nuts and legumes seem heavily connected to great health. Peanuts, a legume posing as a nut? Brilliant!

My idea is: do water fasting (eg 3 days) but including drinking soluble fiber (eg: glucomannan from konjac root - once or twice a day). Soluble fiber will make your guts feel good and you will not feel hunger at least for a few hours and you provide something for your bacteria in the gut, but no calories for yourself. So that way your water fasting is much easier and you are going to feel better during fasting while not providing any calories for your body. I tested it twice and it works very well for me, 3 day fast is easy to do.

Sigh. Weight loss is a side effect, it’s not the point of the diet I’m so tired of reading comments focused on weight loss, which can be done just by reducing energy intake to less than required. That’s it Prolon is to induce autophagy so there is cell “clean-up”, which can also be done with simple (aka free) fasting but most don’t enjoy true fasting (I don’t!), so he created FMD for those people. Please y’all… start rephrasing how you talk about FMD in general. You don’t seem to really understand what it’s about

Peter, we need a scientist to explain fasting on steroids. Aka combining 5-7 day fast with vibration therapy plus red light therapy Vibrations plus fasting is fasting on steroids (it increase autophagy by crazy amounts) but when added light before it could possibly help even more. The issue is studiestöd show it increase both autophagy AND mtor/cell growth ... so, would it block the effect of fasting?

He knows that some people will use Prolon while others will invent a version of their own. There is no problem with making some cash for a non-profit to fund more research in this area. If you know how to do it without products, that's great, and it's partly due to the existence of people like him. But promoting a healthy product is not a big deal. People waste lots and lots of money on far less healthy and kind things. He's a bright guy with a good heart. Let's not punish the decent types. Plenty of idiots who deserve criticism.
