Fix Your Hard to Push Toilet Handle in 5 Minutes Flat!!

In this video tutorial I am working on a toilet that takes a little extra effort and is hard to push on the flush handle. It still works, but is a bit annoying. I show you how to fix this very easily and you can do it yourself and save some money in the process. I am working on a Mansfield type or brand toilet that uses this type of flush valve system.

I'm a senior citizen who was putting up with a hard to push toilet handle. For over a year I lifted the water tank cover and pulled the handle shaft by hand. I was tired of breaking handles and their cost. With your video I was able to fix the problem. It pays to read the instructions. The ring needs to be placed on the first groove. I had pushed the ring all the way down and it wouldn't hold water in the tank. Much appreciated.

I'm only familiar with the old fill tube and flapper assemblies. When I saw this type of valve set up in our new toilet I did not know how to service it. I had no idea what was causing the handle to stick. Wow. What an easy fix. I ordered the yellow valve seals per your recommendation and man it works like a charm. Thank you my friend. Thank you so much! You showed and explained everything clearly so I could be sure this was the type of toilet I had and I was able to swap the valve seals and fix it. (Mentioning in case this happens to others who also have no other experience to draw on) I was afraid I’d done something wrong or gotten the wrong cable seal at first, when (after everything was set up again) there was a tiny but distinct trickle sound after the tank filled that disappeared if I pressed on the black handle, indicating I didn’t have a full seal at the bottom. But it turns out that I must’ve not had the valve seal completely its groove-I pulled it up and put it down again, running my fingers along the edge to make sure it felt like it was evenly sitting, then put everything back together again-success! Now I can be prepared if this issue pops up with the other toilets in the house!

Thanks for the video, it never fails when I turn the water supply off. There’s a drip after I turn it back on. Do you have a video on how to fix that thanks.

HI, I don' have a video for that. But Ive ran into that before. Sometimes you can tighten the nut behind the actual shut off part that you turn. Make sure and back it up with a crescent wrench on the valve body somewhere and try to see if you can get an 1/8 of a turn on the nut. This will usually take care of that.

Thanks for this video. The flushing lever snapped so I had to replace it. Now when I flush it, the handle doesn’t go back up on its own, I’ve to tap it up myself else the water keeps draining. Why isn’t it going back up on its own?

HI... without seeing it it's hard to say. Does the lever move freely on it's own? Does your unit have a chain attached to the handle that has to much slack?

Help! I removed the old gasket it was thick and crusty and breaking apart BUT after I replaced it I saw a grey cloud and now the tank does not fill up and the toilet keeps running. What should I do?

Yikes! Will be difficult to say without being able to see it.... IS the tank filling up at all? Or it it just running but won't fill up...

I saw another video which solved it. Apparently there are two grooves for the gasket to sit in. I had pushed it too far down so I pulled it up into the first groove and it was sealing fine. Thanks for replying!

I’ve done the same steps as you, but now the new valve doesn’t have a good seal. Water keeps leaking through and then gets filled every 15 seconds

Make sure you have the right replacement part... make sure the replacement washer is seated in it's groove properly. You might have to take it back apart to check that. Make sure you clean the sealing surface of the part that goes up and down.. That's about all it could be if you're working with the same style as I have in the video here..

you mustve left out some sort of steps or details because ive redone this 6 times over the last 2 days and it wont seal, it just keeps leaking water and the toilet keeps running

I actually didn't. But I have run into that before. If you take the piston/ plunger (whatever you call it) back out and reseat the red washer, it should solve the problem. It might not be in it's groove all the way around... 😀
