In todays video I show you how easy it is to fix a neglected lawn. I recently diagnosed this lawn and found that it had a history of being over watered. Which means the existing bluegrass will always have an issue. I discovered the tall fescue in the lawn was thriving. The easy fix is to plant tall fescue in the lawn. My favorite species of tall fescue is barenbrug's rtf tall fescue. Very dark green grass species and deep deep roots.
Today we will focus on using a lawn scarifier. my preference is the sun joe dethatcher and scarifier but i've had really good luck with the rock and rocker as well as the ryobi cordless dethatcher and aerator.
I fixed this lawn by simply running the lawn scarifier with two passes. One pass horizontally and the other vertically using the lowest setting on the unit. This digs slits into the soil to allow the grass seed to fall into. I push the debris the scarifier leaves behind off the lawn using a blower and disgard the debris.
The second step is to put the grass seed down. This lawn was super sparse. In the sparse areas I focus on 5-7lbs of grass seed per 1000 sq ft. In the bald areas I put down 10 to 12 lbs of grass seed per 1000 sq ft.
The third step is a starter fertilizer. I prefer to use the propeat 13.5.8 or the 11.11.11 at 9lbs per 1000 sq ft. this is a slow release fertilizer and very safe to use while seading.
The final step is to properly water the seed for two weeks. The seed simply put needs to stay damp for two to three weeks. water several times per week. do not over water. over watering will cause the grass seed to move. It will also cause fungus in the lawn. If we end up with fungus we have extra costs to fix the lawn down the road.
Hit me up in the comments down below.
Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Looking forward to the next part as I have the same issue. We had a paver patio built in the back and a large section of the lawn got damaged. We reseeded with Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra for my mostly tall fescue lawn and the grass grew well, but now we got a lot of weeds. Have been hesitant to treat since the grass is about eight weeks old.

You’re so awesome!! I want to give you a tough lawn up here in Inland NW!! So much moss!! In another area the soil is sooo compact that it won’t retain water. They aerate and power rake in spring, but doesn’t seem to help. Will this seed work in Spokane WA?! And if you don’t have one of those machines, is it a waste to try without?! Thanks guy! You’re the best!

I used RTF on June 3. Due to overwatering I did get run off BUT it has filled in over the past 7 weeks. I will re-apply seed in the fall. The RTF is amazing! I had germination on day 7. Great stuff! I live in Davis County Utah. I will say the RTF grows much faster than my section of Kentucky Blue. I might look into a growth regulator.

Im in mid-Florida. My neighbor across the road lost her husband last year. He used to water their lawn manually/often and it was in great shape. She works. No sprinkler system. She waters now and again but nowhere as much as her husband did. Now the lawn is a disaster, more clumps of brown than green grass. I would like to help her out but not sure where to start/what to suggest other than resod/install sprinkler system. Any suggestions? (Florida soil is basically couple inches topsoil and then sand.)

Does all tall fescue tend to clump? Or are some seed varieties immune to that? Had issues in the past so I’ve stayed away from TF for that reason. Wondering if it was my seed choice?
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 11 ай бұрын
there is a variety of fescue called bunching or clumping tall fescue. invasive and less desireable. most turf type tall fescue does not bunch or clump. tons of great varieties like barenbrug rtf that is very nice on the feet.

@DaivG
@DaivG 11 ай бұрын
Spreading pelletized lime on a heavier dose every spring and honing in the watering schedule got rid of 95% of the moss in my thin lawn. In spring I spread a preemergent fertilizer to help the grass thicken up and it's fought off of the moss and gotten a nice dark green. I still have some moss in the shadiest parts of my lawn, so I'll be hitting the area with some Moss Out to kill off the moss, then I'll rake out the dead moss and throw down some shade tolerant seed.
@peskypeet
@peskypeet 11 ай бұрын
@@pestandlawnginja I'm trying to work the water into the soil in the thin and bald areas. Right now if I water more than about 1/16 of an inch at a time I get standing water. If I think logically about it that means I need a sprinkler with finer mist so it can be fed at a slower rate. It sounds good but I've noticed the wind is kind of crazy in this spot. It really likes to blow and it does it from two different directions. It's a corner house and I get no wind blockage fron either direction.

@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 11 ай бұрын
Sounds kinda odd but I start by making sure the water from the sprinklers is adequately hitting those areas. I commonly find ants in areas that are dry. If that’s not the case I aerate and top dress the area with top soil. All else fails I treat the ants with an ant bait

My lawn is getting completely overwhelmed with creeping charlie and black medic. I don't use weed killers on my lawn and don't plan on doing so because I use the clippings in my compost. Is there anything that I can do to strengthen the grass so that it can overcome the weeds a bit better? I've aerated a couple of times and mow at 3 inches but don't water even during dry spells. Am I doing more harm than good by collecting the clippings and am I doomed to a weedy lawn without using chemicals? Zone 5B in Illinois.

@Fishneck10 11 ай бұрын
Nope. Ur screwed. Use weed killer and don’t use that area of clippings for a month
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 11 ай бұрын
The issue is this. Creeping Charlie is very invasive and it’s classified as a ground cover. So even if it doesn’t go to seed it still “creeps”. Thickening up the grass helps to an extent. Best to mow three x per week and always keep water levels up with healthy grass
@sbffsbrarbrr
@sbffsbrarbrr 11 ай бұрын
@@Fishneck10 Thanks....I thought so 😆. I may have to resort to weed killer because the creeping charlie especially will start "creeping" into my garden beds if I don't control it. At this point there is more creeping charlie than grass. Either that or the lawn may have to go.
