My grandmother held her thread the way you demonstrate. She taught my sister and my sister taught me and I taught my daughter in law. Great tutorial.

Thank you for this. I'm on my third hat and I still haven't figured out the right tension. I just redo stitched that are too tight or too loose. In other videos you can see some people moving their pinky or pointer finger but I couldn't figure out why or how because of the angles. I've tried many different ways of holding the yarn, hopefully this helps!

Thank you, I'll definitely try this. I struggle with the technique of using my index finger for tension and holding with my middle finger and below, but this will be useful!

I hope it helps! I tried different techniques over the years, but this one gives me the most control over tension.

This is cool but when I got into the world of crochet I learned from my mom. Spoiler alert she is the most advanced crocheter I ever met! And that’s how I learned just imagine a dad throwing a there child into the pool to learn how to swim. My mom literally called me over one day and it was just “ catch up with my pace from there” and strangely it worked.

Are you using machine embroidery threads? Those cones look like the ones I use on my machine

The manufacturer describes it as a multipurpose thread, so I'm sure it could be used for machine embroidery as well. It's a 30 wt mercerized cotton thread.

I have tried every way of holding yarn I have found on youtube, magazines and books, and I don't get in with any of them. Yarn sliding between my fingers irritates my skin after only a few seconds and I don't understand how the yarn flows when wrapped around a finger? Mine doesn't move at all, it just tighter until it cuts the blood flow of the finger!

Oh, I can imagine how frustrating that can be. It did take me years to find the method that works best for me. Have you considered trying a yarn tension ring? I haven't personally used one, but I've seen some videos on KZbin, and it seems like a nifty tool that could help.
