I’d love to learn more about fixed gears history in the Caribbean. I’ve seen “fixes” in 1970s Jamaican movies and hear that they inspired lots of messengers to ride fixed.

In 2004 I started riding fixed gear off-road thanks to a Surly converter for shimano hubs. In 2006 I moved to NYC. I played hardcourt bike polo on a Klein Fervor with rear facing dropouts set up fixed. A few dudes took my bike for a quick ride between chukkers, remembering their bmx days. They got their own bikes to do tricks, FGFS on Thursday nights under the BQE elevated highway in Brooklyn. I never did tricks, but I remember the trend starting after dudes rode my 26” wheeled mountain bike. R.I.P. Wonka.

Technically, there is a slight distaste towards FGFS. From BMX freestylers to track snobs. FSers feel like it's stupid why even do it, and track snobs feel it's stupid, why even do it. Lol

Really like the history . Crew currently offers complete 700c and 26” freestyle fixies, think it’s the easiest way for people to get into the sport today.

Merry Christmas Jackson and thanks for this fun and interesting film. And dont sweat who you are and how you are changing (that stuff can eat you alive I know), embrace your passions and the change. Wishing you all the best with your running adventure and channel, a roundabout marathon sounds proper zen and v like something a fixed rider would love :-)

I started riding fixed gear because I moved to a major city and the cardio was perfect for my age (30 at the time). Plus, Skateboarding was getting tough for me. Honestly the whole scene is pretty toxic. Everyone hates everyone who rides a bike different than their own. It’s all about how many tattoos you have, how cool your fit is, and how expensive your bike is. Maybe that’s just the scene where I live. I love ridding fixed gear but most of the people I meet are “too cool for school”. Just chill and let people enjoy the ride.

I really never got fgfs tbh, especially once it started moving away from doing tricks on your main commuter/work bike, to having a bike for tricks that you couldn't even cycle to spots because the gear was too small, the saddle was too low. It just became bmx but just with a fixed gear which just made it look really awkward to me and didn't add anything. Didn't some guys go to 24"? Great video though, made me a bit nostalgic for that time when fixed gears were so popular and there was so many around.

2009? I guess that's when people started doing wild tricks or something. Fixies kinda started to become more known because of the bike messengers - back in the '80s there was no email, and there was no such thing as DocuSign, etc. Papers that needed to be signed, served, notarized, etc. had to be physically delivered and that's what the bike messengers did. Most of them used fixies going from law firm to law firm in the city. They were cheap, light, maneuverable, and less likely to be stolen. Then fixies got to be a fad in maybe the early '90s among the hipsters. You just weren't cool if you needed a freewheel and gears lol.

Would love to see more tracklocross in 2025. We've got a lil mini-mini-mini scene brewing here in Durango and its pretty cute. Like to see it get rad. Thanks for the history lesson! Love your vids.

Tbh i love the 700c more, its the spirit of fixies the art of balance and unique
@another399712 күн бұрын
The "spirit of fixies" and the "art of balance" have nothing to do with 700c or indeed 26 inch wheels. The first fixed gear bikes were nothing like the bikes you associate with modern bikes. The people who rode early bikes, which were fixies in the truest sense, mastered the art of balance, created the 'spirit' of fixed gears, and indeed pioneered the whole phenomenon that we call cycling today. What you refer to is nothing more than the gradual evolution of the groundwork layed out a hundred years before hipsters and couriers got in on the act and started thinking they invented the whole thing. 🙄

@another3997 its your perspective, i cant tell anything🤷♂️still keeping my opinion tho
@justvanhxd11 күн бұрын
@another3997 btw 700c tires definitely need balance work more than 26 inch, thats the obvious thing Thats what i meant when i said the terms "art of balance" i dont reject and thinking that hipsters invented this whole fixie culture bruv, see the "i love" so its just me showing my love with it, aint got no beef against 26 inch user alr

IMO, fgfs on 26 was taking it too far. Tricks on a track bike feel more smooth, spontaneous, and still connected with fixed gear roots. The crazy stuff on 26" bikes feels more just like BMX with bigger wheels.
@another399712 күн бұрын
All cycling has a common ancestry, and people are still creating new cycling niches to this day. Every time something new appears, some people don't like the direction it's taking, saying it's a step too far, an undesirable change, pointless or even an insult. You mentioned the roots of fixed gear, and 26 inch being too different. But 'modern' track bikes aren't that root. The very first pedal powered vehicles were not only fixed, but direct drive (eventually culminating in the 'Penny Farthing' as the ultimate expession ofcthe principle). People actually did 'tricks' on such bikes. Only later did geared bikes appear, eventually becoming chain or shaft driven. Initially they too were fixed gear, until the freewheel came along. But they were nothing like modern track bikes. The track bikes you refer to are in fact just as far removed from the root as a 26 inch bikes. 😉

Any niche that can hit its limits in a few years is a “fad”, And when people stop because it’s no longer cool absolutely makes it a fad. Some fads are cooler than others, and this fad is one of those.

Messengers rode brakeless fixed gear because the nicer track frames and forks did not have brake holes. There were no brakes to take off.
