Fixing a 2DS That Won't Power On (Turns off with a POP!)

In this video I fix the issue on a Nintendo 2DS that won't turn on (power on for a second and then powers off / shuts down). The fix for this one was unexpected!

Disclaimer: Unless your 2DS has sentimental value, I probably wouldn't recommend a screen replacement simply because the cost of the screen (at the time of making this video) is almost identical to just buying another used system. If you have this issue and your screen does not appear damaged, here are a few things to check: 1) are all the screen connections secure? There are 3 in total going to the PCB so be sure to check all of them. 2) Are the screen connectors on the PCB itself in good condition? A damaged connector means a bad connection. 3) Are there any broken traces on the PCB or the screen flex cables? This can be tricky to identify, but if conductors are damaged, it will behave just like the screen is not plugged in. 4) If everything looks good and you still have this issue, just try disconnecting and reconnecting the screen cables, check the gold pins and clean them if necessary before reconnecting. It is possible there are other causes for this issue not related to the screen/digitizer; I don't know of any, but please let me know if you come across any new information. Happy fixing y'all!

good to know that my old 2ds is fixable, this was definetly something i wouldnt have been able to manage when i was little but now i should be able to get it fixed with some help. Its worth the sentimental value, plus i had bought some games on it and lost the eshop account so id love to get that info and finally beat kirby planet robobot's true areana....(i had the game installed at the time of it breaking, and i know about e shop being down)

I bought two 2ds and neither worked. One had busted screen, the 2nd had other issues. I pulled the screen from the 2nd and put it in the first, using your video as reference and bingo. Got a working 2ds from two scrap 2ds. 👍🏼

Pro tip, if you arent sure that the screens are the problem, you can actually connect them to the console without properly mounting them, making it easier to test and subsequently return if that was not the issue.

True. I always test everything before a full reassembly, but don't always film it or otherwise put that footage in the video. I should probably at least comment on it to recommend doing that.

Ah dang it, I wanted to buy a donor 2ds (with the same popping problem) for another 2ds I own with a busted screen to save on some display cost... It could be for nothing... But I think I'll still buy it, it's good to have spare parts laying around

dust on screens is such a pain, i normally use compressed air it helps a ton

I do the same and then finish with tape, it seems to get all the last tiny bits that even the air duster won't blow off.

Size 1.5 philips for the back shell. I think I switched to a 2 for the circuit board screws.

I have a Crystal Red 2ds that stopped working a few years back out of nowhere. I always take care of my stuff and never dropped it. It has the same symptoms the 2ds has in the video, but I’m not to confident in opening it up.

Possibly a loose connection vs the screen itself being damaged. You could start by re-establishing those connections like I did in the early parts of the video. Be glad it's not a 3DS because those are a nightmare to work on in comparison.

What size screw driver did you use for the outside ones

Try a 1.5 and if that seems too small switch to 2. They are JIS screws and I just have regular philips drives so you have to go a little smaller on the bit size to get a good fit.

Is there a good way to fix a dirty sleep switch without taking my 2ds apart? My 2ds will randomly shut itself off and go into sleep mode off and on while playing and sometimes I won’t be able to turn it on I assume because the system thinks it’s in sleep mode again. I play this think like every day so I assume it’s dust but I didn’t wanna have to open it up to clean it. If that is the case, do you have a video showing that?

I've never had one in hand with a bad sleep button so no video sadly. Send me yours and I can make one :) You could try squirting some rubbing alcohol on the button and switch it back and forth many times to work in the alcohol. I would repeat that a few times, then follow up with air duster if you have it. Then let it dry out a bit. If it was just a bit of gunk causing the problem this method could solve it without opening it up. Generally I recommend opening it though because that's the only way to clean it thoroughly.

Do you /have/ to put the sticker on the screen? I'm trying to fix my husband's 2DS, and it's still making the popping noise, and that's the only thing I did differently from the video. (Not including my husband broke one of the 4-pin connector locks, but I have enough to keep it in place for now 😅)

I don't think the sticker is 100% necessary and is more for aesthetics. I can pretty much guarantee that busted connector latch is the reason for the problem persisting. Unfortunately there's not really a good fix for that short of replacing the connector. If you still have the latch, and it just unclipped rather than snapping, it is possible but challenging to get it back in place.

So my sister's console died a few years ago while watching an horror movie and we thought it was over for it (me and my sister have the same ). Until a few days ago when i tried to charge it, it actually showed that it was charging . So i tried to turn it on, it's slowly working but it turns off after five seconds or more. It can't turn on without the charger, and it looks like there's a glitch between the charger button and the power button.

got a new 2ds xl with that exact problem, sadly its practically impossible to replace the screen, because its glued to the back not attached with screws, so you either break it when you try to get it in or try to close it off again. :(

It came out pretty easily for me. You could try softening the adhesive with a hair dryer to make it easier to pry up.

i have the same problem but it’s the screen flex connector while reattaching it the clip broke off and the cable was intact but there is no clip for that connector plugging the cable back into the connector leads to a popping noise that wasn’t there i got it to work for a few seconds but it stopped working and won’t turn on again what should i do since there is no latch for the connector

If you still have the clip I'd inspect it closely to see if it actually broke or if it just came out of the connector housing. Usually it's the latter and it can be reattached but it is difficult. If the latch is gone you need a new connector naturally requires soldering. If you take some measurements on the old connector you should be able to find something equivalent on Digikey or Mouser you can buy for $1 to replace with.

If it doesn't pop it might mean that the speakers are also bad /have bad connection or it is a separate issue. I would start by checking all the flex cable connections and re-connecting them.

My 2ds sometimes very rarely turns on for a random period of time. The shortest time was about 5 seconds (before the menu loaded) the longest was about 8 minutes but the result is the sam, it crashes with a pop (the pop is not as loud as in this video) and doesn't turn on for a few weeks or months and then the cycle continues. The longer I don't mess with it, the longer it will stay turned on when I do boot it. I thought it was a battery issue but not I don't think so. Any Idea what it could be?

It sounds like it could be an intermittent connection, you'd have to open it and inspect the connectors and cables. Redoing all the connections might be enough to solve it unless there is a tear/damage on a cable

Probably a busted piece of plastic from the shell or shoulder buttons rattling around in there. I'm assuming your unit was dropped at some point?

Hard to tell based on your description but you might solve it by cleaning (or replacing if that doesn't work) the volume slider.

I'd check the screen for any obvious damage (i.e. cracks). Next I'd check the connections to the screen/digitizer as they may be loose or disconnected. Last resort is replacing like I did here. If the screen is damaged that's the only option.

How do you know the screen is fine? Sometimes the damage can be not visible or very hard to detect. I think it could also be the WiFi antenna not fitted correctly--it's the button style connector where the wire runs around the console.

What do I do if it’s the game cartridge? I’ve tested multiple games across three different consoles. Literally just the one game. I hit it with isopropyl alcohol. Still didn’t work. Hit it with brass cleaner. Still nothing. 🤷‍♀️

Have you checked the physical connections on the board? If those are damaged or otherwise discontinuous it would cause the same issue.

@@rinmixx the screen has 3 different connectors on the board. If you've checked them all and they look good I'd try disconnecting and reconnecting all of them and see if that helps. Without seeing it in person that's the best advice I can give for now. I hope you can get it working!

Very possible. I've heard it can also be caused by a bad touch screen (also called a digitizer) rather than the screen itself. In my case the screen was obviously broken so I went straight to a full screen replacement.

If you're getting the popping behavior I assume it would be related to the screen or its connections. You could also try general troubleshooting things like removing the battery, pressing power, plugging/removing adapter, and reinstalling the battery.

@@shahrahman6256 make sure it's not in sleep mode. Could be the power switch. The fact you put it in rice and that that solved something earlier tells me it probably has water damage which can be very hard to troubleshoot and in many cases the motherboard is shot
