Thank you Richard, this wasn't the issue, but I took the valve out and tried again and this issue is now resolved. My initial problem of a continual overflow has not though, and after removing the silicon diaphragm I can see that it has corroded. I have now ordered a replacement which I am hoping will solve my problem. Thank you again for your help!
