My insight. Whenever there is a sharp transition between a more rigid and flexible steel arm it tend to break in this transition. The challenge is to smooth out the transition so there is even flex along the materials. No stress point.

The one that was fixed without the plate was probably the first one to break so he fixed it by welding and when the other broke he decided it obviously needed reinforcement so added the plate but didn't go back to the previous arm cause it was still functional at the time

For bulk grinding like this.. You really want to have a big 9" grinder. Usually the big green hitachi is the most common one you will find. It is a monster and worth every penny. It will grind it away in 1/10th of the time. It will spoil you; you won't want to use little grinders anymore. lol

What's your thought on baby skid steer vs putting forks on a backhoe for those of us who aren't planning to spring for a telehandler any time soon? would the size be a big issue for moving around, or is being able to move larger logs worth it?
@mcremona7 ай бұрын
If you already have the backhoe, go for it. Lift capacity aside, a telehandler would be a more effective material handler but that’s only because it’s specifically designed for that purpose
@trevsaunders57787 ай бұрын
@@mcremona Thanks! not yet, thinking about where to start, probaly the mini skid for size and storing attachments. Totally makes sense it would handle material better, backhoes are definitely compromises, but between price (for something pretty old) and the odd job perhaps it makes sense, we'll see!

Yeah there was not much holding that arm together any more. A lot of rot had to be removed and like you said replacing the full part would have cost and been a lot more involved and technical to do correctly. I thing with putting the deep wield in then wielding a plate to help reinforce the joint should make it last quite a while. May not have been the prettiest wielding job but should hold up.

As an amateur welder... I prefer to stick welding, but only because when I was learning. The thinnest plate we used was 1/4" and up to 1" thick, it was all outside work at night in all types of weather. I plan on getting a mig next year to try out.

Again.. When you add patches like that.. Always make the ends come out to a point; it's a lot stronger, and won't be prone to breaking again. I'm sure your reinforcements will still work for this little thing though.

Your welding cannot be perpendicular to the arm of the machine. You had to cut the plate in a diamond shape, and as a result, your welds would be 45 degrees
