Fixing a Jeep shifter that can be dangerous if not fixed

Hey y’all in today’s video we will be working on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 that has an issue with the shifter. Customer states that there’s a check shifter message on the cluster and as well shifter moves freely without pressing the shifter button. Come joint me in this video to see if hay we find out

Thanks all the way from Perth Australia! Have this happen to me yesterday! Took apart the shifter as you did and found the exact same issue. Wrapped the small part in electrical tape to stop hold the spring loaded section into place. Works a treat now! Thanks again.

Thanks for the great and extremely thorough video. Your systematic approach to diagnosing an issue coupled with the way you explain your thoughts as you work thru the issue are fantastic. I wish more mechanics and mechanic videos were like yours. I have the same issue on my Grand Cherokee and looked everywhere for a solution on how it can be repaired. Thankfully I found your video first and as it turns out my shifter has the same issue as you found where the plastic had worn away causing he spring to fully extend and press both buttons. Thanks.

Why couldn't they have just put NORMAL shifters in these???? I was (am?) about to purchase a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Edition that I instantly fell in love with (hard) and now, while waiting on the financing I'm an anxious mess after researching this over engineered and completely unnecessary franken shifter. And the 2016s in my area are much further away, and much more expensive (OF COURSE!!!!!!!!!). I should have known why this gorgeous car was close to me and affordable!! Nowadays, there is always a booger hiding in the woodpile with every nice affordable and conveniently close used vehicle. 😒🥵

I wonder if the computer has a safety built in. Incase you accidentally bump the shifter, It probably won't shift the gear if it sees the vehicle speed is moving. Though, It could still be dangerous even with the car parked, because you could accidentally shift it into neutral. Great video!

i accidentaly did this and yes the computer wont let you, it states that it requires to be in no movement for reverse shift

Question, I have the same jeep and today my lights on my shifter stopped and on the dash it says service shifter would you think I need to get the same part for the lights to come back on the shifter and for the service shifter to go away?? Thanks

I think the TCU is programmed to not shift into reverse or park when the vehicle is moving forward, but it could shift into neutral and you would loose power to the wheels so still a potentially dangerous situation.

Anton Yelchin (guy that played checkov in the star trek reboot) was killed by his WK2 jeep grand cherokee - When it rolled away and pinned between the truck and his driveway gate. Turns out there was a recall on the gearshift software that dealers had gotten the week it happened. Might want to make sure the owners of the vehicle you were working on here got the recall? Pretty sure jeep is obligated to fix this issue with the 2014/15 wk2 jeep GC

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I'm getting the service shifter message on the cluster. I tried swapping the shifter knob like they showed in this video and it didn't help. I can still move the shifter without pressing the knob. Opened it up and nothing is broken inside. I'm getting code P1c86-14. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there, I took mine apart as the same issue happened to me. The tabs were not broken, but I assume after 8 years of constant use, the plastic has slowly worn away. I used some electrical tape just to build the height of the tabs slightly. Just enough to hold it into place when the spring has tension on it. Works well. We will see how long it lasts, but at least we know the cause now.

Chrysler only used that for a couple of years. I had mine fixed after a recall. Don't ask how I almost backed over myself, very bad design

I'll bet one of those micro switches is broken, from being pressed too hard. This is a very common problem with micro switches. These are the same in your key fob as well as dongles, garage door openers, etc.

What do you mean by acceleration contractor or which fuse? I swapped the shifter knob with another one and still get the service shifter message. Also, I can still move the shifter without pressing the knob.
