Another unnecessarily long "repair" video, in which I try and get a Sony PS-LX56P record player to work, even though I don't have the original hi-fi which it was part of. In case you can't be bothered to watch the video, here's what I learned:
1) You need a pre-amp (there was one built into the original hi-fi).
2) You need a 12V DC power supply (mine was 1500mA and worked fine).
3) You need to cut off the connectors from both the record player's power input and the 12V supply, then solder them together.
4) The markings on the Sony power input are counter-intuitive. The wire with a white marking on appears to be the ground, while the black wire is positive. If you connect it backwards, the record player will spin very fast in the wrong direction, but it doesn't seem to harm it.
The music at the end of the video is by No Violet noviolet.bandcamp.com/
(The music in the rest of the video is by me, just to avoid confusion)

Thanks for this. My friends got me this for my birthday 10 years ago and I’ve finally (!!!) gotten around to getting it work. Really helpful video. No just to get a wee preamp for it and I’ll be on my way. Take it easy!

A 'servo' is in simple terms a position control. From Wikipedia; A servomotor is a rotary actuator or linear actuator that allows for precise control of angular or linear position, velocity and acceleration.[1] It consists of a suitable motor coupled to a sensor for position feedback. It also requires a relatively sophisticated controller, often a dedicated module designed specifically for use with servomotors. This turntable contains a circuit board which produces PWM (pulse width modulation) but this is only used to regulate the speed of the turntable motor. As a turntable is continuously rotating its position does not need to be controlled, so strictly speaking the controller is not a 'servo' as such. When the 12 volt supply was connected in reverse polarity the active components in the circuit could not function. This explains why when the platter rotated in the wrong direction it did so at a much higher speed than the expected 33 1/3 RPM.

I just got this exact model, NOS :D Thank you for sharing your experience. I am going to try to put the tranfsormer inside - because there is a mounting space for it - Version PS-LX56 was made with standard mains power cord and integrated 12DC trafo. Also there should be "power" switch, but I think I can live without it :)

Thank you so much! I copied exactly what you did apart from me getting the wires the wrong way round at first, I managed to get it all working!

I have one that works but the all- in one hi fi unit is no more, like yours. Can I buy any DC 12 volt adapter and join the wires with a connecting block to give my turntable a power supply do you think.

Hey great video, I have the exact same turn table and I also have the original Hi-Fi system it came with, but I just want to use the turn table on it's own. Do you think it would be possible to open up the unit and terminate the new 12v adapter cable straight into the turn table to save from splicing the wires and using tape?

Hey thanks for the tutorial just got given this record player and going to try get her up and running 😊 I don't have a phono preamp but I have a focusrite scarlett 6i6 soundcard and was wondering if I got a rca to 1/4 inch Jack adapter will it play through my soundcard coz it has a built in pre amp?

Hey. Connecting to an soundcard is possible, but you need to set the RIAA correction manually, using an equalizer with a minimum delay, in real time. And the second aspect, you need to take two mono jacks for the left and right channels. This is done for digitizing vinyl records. (I apologize for my English as it is not my native language)
