30+ years ago, I was the head wrangler for a dude ranch in the Rockies. We had a beautiful quarter gelding that was pedigreed and very athletic. The boss only allowed his grown children and a couple of the most experienced wranglers to ride him. The problem was that his children would swing up and immediately push the gelding into a run, not a canter, a full-out run. When the gelding came back, he was bouncing to the moon. He was almost unrideable at times. I finally convinced the boss to let me have control over who rode him. For 7 months, this gelding wasn't allowed to do anything more than a walk on the trails. After that time, any adult could ride him. After 2 years of that, I was putting grade school kids on him. He thought that as soon as a human swung up, he was supposed to get going. I showed him a better way. But it took a very long time and considerable patience. Now, as far as I'm concerned, he was a blast to ride. He wasn't dangerous, just very high energy. But he was considerably more valuable after he decided he could be calm. The last time I saw him, they had him giving "pony" rides for toddlers. Of course by that time, he was 20+ years old. 😊😊😊

Truth! I see so many horses in rescue that are there because they take off hard as they can go when butt hits saddle and even getting on is a challenge. I spend a month sometimes just standing beside mounting block lol

Beautiful girl! I can't express enough how informative, and valuable, your videos are...and I don't even own a horse. I really hope that the horsey people that watch your videos appreciate the fact that you share this wealth of knowledge with them for free. Even if you just have a pleasure horse, so many of these videos are worth their weight in gold. Folks...Like, comment, subscribe, and don't forget to share! Thank you Tim! ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎

This is so what we need! My trainer says to use transitions, but my boy doesn’t bring his energy down in any of the transitions so he just gets more and more hyped over a lesson. Thank you!!!

I have seen barrel racers push and have bad runs, then keep repeating the bad maneuvers. I agree with you 100%! To keep a horse solid in their job they have to be able to think and to rate their actions. Great video!!

Great video. Unfortunately, a lot of amateur horse owners (certainly not all) don't have the patience, know how or understand to do basic foundation work. 😊Thank you for sharing!

Absolutely so true are your words... My horses were all started by Western Riders... always wondered why they ride to enjoy. If stuff up use as training run. Now I get it. The energy and softness to ride as I followed what they said to me to do gave me fantastic sound horse's that lasted along time. That loved to work and compete. I rode all disciplines of English.

Do you know many competitors who think the way you do? I've never met one! It is all about winning every run for so many riders( which they don't) and I can see how your way is beneficial to both horse and rider.

I like what you say about using competitions as training venues. I used to do this when I was competing although I was an English rider. Often a horse thinks it can take over in the dressage arena. It comes as a shock to some to actually be corrected in the middle of a test. Who cares if you "throw" the competition? It is better than the horse thinking it can get away with things in a competition you would not allow in a training situation. Same with them getting excited in a jumping situation. Their behaviour at competition should be that of what you expect at home when training.

I am a sports medicine veterinarian and I train and compete in timed dog sports. I find many competitors ask their dogs to go all-out in every competition. These dogs can be hell to live with and I see them in my clinic with injuries at a young age.

Easiest way to ruin a barrel horse is running too often to practice. Slow steady basic riding off barrels works much better before and after patterning. So does cattle work and trail riding, but I think that helps all horses. OTTB love the cows and the trails too!

Tim you probably don’t accept a horse into your barn before having it thoroughly vetted first, right? 😊 Love the videos, thank you for your efforts. I’ve been riding and training for over 50 years and never want to stop learning. 👍 PS. This is in response to the lameness inquiry…the horse looks fine to me.

Oh gosh, I wish you could work with my very high-strung OTTB mare. Right from the mounting block she breaks into a trot. I can't imagine her slowly walking around right off the bat. I wonder if this is something she'll eventually calm down from with age.

My crazy and blind or does that mare look a little bit lame?? She may just be lazy walking IDK but she's bothering her heading off a lot and dragging them feet just curious if anybody else sees that? I had a horse one time that used to be a contest worse I used to run barrels with her and she was laying and I just can't help but wonder it's been a long time that I've seen a lame horse... a contest horse would have a tendency to go lame faster than say a pleasure or pasture horse? I'm sure that would be the case.

I get this comment with every new horse. Resistant is often misinterpreted as lame. Until riders learn to tell the difference, they will never advance in their horsemanship.

Lame? Nope don’t think so. She looks nice and square. Perhaps she is getting used to a different rider and cues and so perhaps a little hesitant. But lame? Don’t think so

@@timandersonhorsetrainingcan you give guidelines on rider weight and horse load capacity? John Wayne was a big guy, but he didn't ride draft horses. Is there a difference between say a defensive tackle (strong, fit, but big) and an average fit large person and what size/strength of horse they would need?
