15:45 My exact thoughts. It’s truly hard to find a business that will work with your desires, after working at a dealership for so many of my young years- I understand that the advisors/phonemen will often hear out the pitch about craziness, but write it off and hope for the best. The message of “don’t screw these up” often doesn’t even reach the technician, and 99% of the time they don’t even know how to perform the service with the delicacy to keep our desires in mind. Always a blessing to find someone who understands and delivers to your requests, even better when you’re capable of doing them yourself and have access to the necessary tools.

Just an item of note. New tires will have either a red circle or a yellow circle on the sidewall. Sometimes both. The circles are installed at the factory. Red denotes the highest or widest part of the tire. The yellow dot is the lightest part of the tire. These marks are clocked either at the TPMS for yellow or opposite of the TPMS is red. This aids in reducing the amount of weights needed to balance the wheel/tire.
@hassanmoh30203 жыл бұрын
New Michelin's don't come with the red dot now unfortunately

A Good Service Advisor getting that message to the Tech (other than just on the RO) helps massively. re: the scratching inside of the rim ordeal.

the wheel cleaner on the balancer that they use is basically watered down isopropanol alcohol so it would strip that coating off pretty easily with a little elbow grease. worked there for 4 years and did my fair share of stupid expensive wheels. that tech shouldn’t have been using a metal knife to remove those weights though. sooo much damage has been done by those knifes. also, he took black weights off so why didn’t he put back weights back on... it’s the little things that matter. other than that, he did an okay job

from my experience as a tractor trailer mechanic and well over a thousand tire changes. the brand of tire and the model can make a difference in the way the tire beads. the most picky tire I have dealt with is a Goodyear, a slight imperfection in the wheel can make a Goodyear not take to beading. Where as Michelin tires the wheel would have to be junk for it to not bead. Before I bead any wheel I always wipe the lip off that is facing outside. where I work we use a tire mounting compound that is a form of grease and tire soap and water to dismount. we deal with tire pressures ranging from 100 to 115 psi. I only had one tire blow out next to me in my 17 years and one suspension air bag. anyways awesome video.

@arushs1212 жыл бұрын
That sticker wasn't the culprit(leak was below the Michelin branding). The side of the bead isn't even what holds majority of the the air, it should have just been bead sealed as it looks like the wheel(what people call a rim) is slightly bent.
@sckiller2 жыл бұрын
I bought brand new wheels and mounted new tires on them. 2 out of the 4 leaked from the bead just like yours. I was so frustrated. I actually inflated the tires to max PSI, which was 50 and drove around on a short drive. I then deflated tires to normal pressure, 30 psi. Well the tires haven’t leaked since so I guess the reseated themselves on the bead. Idk.

Bro, you think the exact same way as I do with the secret tricks - grease the palm, do as much of the work yourself like taking out the center cap, clean up the wheel to show you've done your part and you care. I try to do things all myself if I want it done right, but when it's out of my hands, it's all about the psychology tricks in life to get things done your way. Also, after watching the technician, you'd think that mounting tires in this way should be standard operating procedure since they do this all day long. but I guess money talks and it helps to film the situation to get it done right.

Didn't they have automatic tire mounting machine? In my personal opinion. That is the only way to go, if dealing with low profile tires, and specially if they are getting mounted onto expensive wheels.
@datboinumpad17155 жыл бұрын
I used to work for discount tire we didn't use automatic changers because they are actually far more likely to scratch wheels in our experience. And mat is incorrect about the way the wheels are clamped it's four rubber or delrin covered hooks that grab around the bottom bead seat. Discount tire also will stand behind any damage they inflict and repair it at their own loss. The taping in the video of the clamps is improper aswell as how dirty this particular store is it would not have been up to the standards of management. I could go on but hopefully you get the idea

This is what I meant by never coating the barrel, even if the wheel weights were put on first, eventually you’ll need to get them rebalanced or get a nail in the tire etc. wheel weights will never stay in the spot for the lifetime of the tires, and as tires wear naturally you’ll notice it will need wheel balancing again. I guess it’s just my precaution to everyone, save the barrels.

@@Patrick94GSR depends how you look at it. For every wheel that doesn't get damaged by a "tire shop" or $50-$150 per friend/family/customer, 1-2x each, per year. Either way it pays for itself in convenience but it does take up a good bit of space. Craigslist, eBay or Summit Racing the price range is around $1k-$30k but that doesn't include the necessary 40-60 gallon air compressor. Time is money and I want my tires balanced and to stay balanced with little to no tire weights, ballanced with the valve on the DOT or brightest paint mark, no damage to rims, no over/under torquing the lugs, no tires getting crushed, no tire bead getting over streched, actually taking the temperature of the tires before install and no scratches on my cars from a bunch of kids lacking tool control. For me, it technically paid for itself in a year and is easy to maintain. Not to mention I don't have to trust my life to some kids first tire change, that shit's priceless. If you're particular about your tires, there's no other way outside of spending money that you could be using to get a rig together. Only when I need a touchless machine is when I'll pay a bright eyed adult, otherwise I'm happy with my choice. You be surprised what you can get for $5k

The yellow and red dots are for poorly manufactured tyres. Good tyres don't have them as they will only be around 10g out of balance. I balance up my rims without tyre, then install tyre to see what is going on then rebalance with my 4 point ultra balance that involves 12 balance checks on the assembly. The rims are usually way more out of balance than the tyre and no large correlation to the valve stem being the heavy spot, so aligning valve stem with yellow dot is just pissing in the dark.

I’m not sure how picky you are, but I know in the bike world people like to have the tire logo near the air valve.
@Patrick94GSR5 жыл бұрын
only reason for doing that is to make it easier to find a puncture in the tube and then subsequently find what caused the puncture in the bike tire. On cars it's better to get the red and yellow dots lined up with the wheel valve stem and/or the TPMS sensor as needed to reduce the amount of weights needed to balance the tire. Bicycle tires don't get balanced so logo near the valve stem works fine there.
