Good video, thanks. I am also a boat buster, over in Washington State. Seattle area. Must be nice not to never have to deal with salty motors.I usually try to find motors that don't show salt use but sometimes I still end up one, 3 out of 10. The torch is the savior. Those late 60's early 70s 6 horses are almost always reliable but they are pre bolts in the water pump housing and a little salt and you can end up with a mess on your hands. Those screws can break or strip pretty easy. Something I started doing a few years ago when buying a motor is remove the plugs and squirt some pre-mix fuel in the cylinders, put the plugs back in and give it a pull. If it fires, increased chances you have a healthy power head. I call it a red neck compression test.

Ya know, I found your channel and a few others after bartering for a boat. Then another, and another, then next thing I know I’ve got 4 boats and half a dozen odd outboards. Fixing and cleaning up 3 of the boats and all the outboards to sell come spring and summer. I’m rebuilding a 1961 Hewes Craft for myself. Your videos on outboards really helped make it easy to tackle their issues with confidence. I’ll be able to pickup a new 9.9 and 25hp after all is said and done. Cheers from WA state.

For the Mariner the reason that piece comes off is so if theres binding further down the rods and gears then you dont over torque and break something further down. Its "disposable" but easily reparable. The adhesive that held it for so long just failed.

I spy a twin line pressure tank at 1:31 in, but haven't seen you work on any engines old enough to use it. Is it just part of the accumulated "boat junk" that comes with the territory of hoarding and flipping old motors? Lol. OMC did improve the coating on their cork floats at one point. I've learned that if the shellac is a dark red color (like the ones you show here), it likely needs replaced, but if it's a light tan color it's probably fine. The lighter colored floats had a more fuel (and ethanol) resistant coating to them. I don't recall plastic floats even being available several years ago when I first started messing aroudn with old outboards, so I had to resport to finding a new OMC cork float, or on occasion drying out the original one and re-coating it with "model airplane dope" as the old timers called it at the time.
@BoatBusters
@BoatBusters 10 күн бұрын
@@retro_grade that is indeed a pressure tank! Definitely have used it to work on some vintage outboards in the past- I don’t do it often because the resale value is really not there.. so right now it’s just a part of the junk collected from being a boat guy yes 🤣

@BoatBusters great stuff. Loads of knowledge to be absorbed. Not much saltwater up there in Ohio, though, so I bet cooling system corrosion or scale isn't much of a problem for you. Here in Florida, it's a very different story. You show some mighty old outboards that are still alive or that you can revive pretty...easily? Mine is a 1975 Aquasport 170 with a 2000 Yamaha 115hp 2 stroke that runs like a top until it gets too hot and drops into safe mode. I'm thinking I'm going to run a RYDLYME flush through it for some hours and see how that does. I'm hoping & betting it'll work wonders. Once it's running all at temp day, I the boat refurb will include redesign for a larger gas tank to get me to the Bahamas without having to buy gas in Bimini 😐. A 4 stroke would be cool because of the quietness and fuel savings, but not buying an engine is even nicer 🤷. Besides, a 2 stroke is so much simpler and easier for me to work on and not as nearly as heavy.

@@FrankJohnson-r3e couldn’t agree more! Yeah corrosion is definitely present up here but nearly as big of an issue as it is in Florida. The flush will be good for it! Thanks for watching

What, you don't let your gas leak out your fuel lines on the carb? That's top of the line auto-flushing system there homie. Make sure you don't get debris stuck up in there

in my area every one of those outboards go for more than that broke. i see broke ones for the price of your running outboards. they will neeed a carb and sell it for 1000$ on a 6hp. want a running 15 horse easily paying 1500 for for a running 72 johnson or pay 2000-2500 for anything newer then an 88.
