Thanks, BUT everyone should know that if the iconcache.db isn't there, you can use the backup. It's a hidden file: same name with the .backup extension after the .db. Then, after killing explorer.exe., you get a command prompt and enter: attrib -H iconcache.db.backup That unhides the file, which permits you to do the copy: copy iconcache.db.backup iconcache.db Then re-launch explorer. Worked instantly for me, thanks so much.

guys btw, for the icons that did not work, just right click on them, open file location, and then create a shorcut on ur desktop from the real launcher, and delete the old one.

Worked for me. Thanks. Just FYI for anyone else, there's other videos that have you go to the actual folder that holds iconcache.db file and manually delete it THEN you turn off explorer.exe, run new task, then run explorer.exe... ...that method got a lot of likes so I assume it worked for a lot of people, but it didn't work for me. I tried this method that has you turn off explorer FIRST, also doing it through command and not manually, and THIS video's method worked for me. *So even though it looks like the same thing/method it may be just different enough to run the correct command to work on your rig, if this doesn't work try the other method and similarities aside it might just work for you.*

Thanks for the help. Now let me help you. The word "Icons" should not have an apostrophe in that sentence. The apostrophe is mainly used to show possession. Now, if you were to say "to bring back the icon's original form" that may make sense, because it shows that the icon possesses form.

FYI, you can also just browse to "C:\Users\[username]\Local" and delete "IconCache.db" All you effectively did was the same thing, only instead of clicking you typed a bunch of garbage text to tell a windows command line prompt to delete it for you.

I initially did as you said and it did not fix the issue for me on Windows 10 until I followed the steps in this video to stop the process and delete the file through the command prompt. The reason for using cmd is because once you stop the explorer.exe process, you cannot open a file explorer to delete the cache file manually. With the process running in the background the cache doesn't really get deleted properly for some people, like me.

To avoid having downloaded file (not program) shortcuts display as blank white rectangles, you MUST set a browser as a default browser. Afterward, all downloaded files will display an icon of the default browser regardless of which browser was originally used to download the file. Setting a default browser does not prevent use of more than one browser. It simply means that if you want to use a browser other than the default browser, you will need to open the selected browser when you want to browse the Internet. If you want to open any file which has been downloaded, simply select which browser you want to open that file if you want to use a browser other than the default browser.

Had a hard time finding the explorer process in Task Manager (Windows 10) after ending it. Still had CMD window open, so typed 'start explorer.exe'. Desktop returned with missing icon intact. Cheers!

hi man, i got a huge issue, all my dll files are a blank papper, all files for windows are working but out side is the are not. my mod menu's for a few games are broken the are all unable to inject in to the game. the are all white pappers even when released from visual studio. all off them. what can that be because off?

change view to see hidden files then go to where iconcache file is and delete it. Then just restart explorer.exe and your done

Still doesn't work for me on Win10. Just updated from 8.1 Pro to Win10 Enterprise and after 2 or 3 days of use exe icons disappeared and keep being blank. Deleting iconcache didn't work, no matter hof often i tried.

+Thyrador Uhtmârson sounds like an upgrade issue ether call microsoft or go in to your control panel settings in win 10, then update, then restore to back to windows 8.1 then upgrade back to windows 10 and see if that helps.

It did not work for me. I still have black squares over my desktop icons after every restart. Every time I restart, I then have to restart again in safe mode, and then restart normal and the black squares are gone. I have tried every option offered on KZbin and nothing works for Windows 7 64bit Pro
