The Shermanator gets an engine swap! This 1980 GMC Sierra Grande crew cab sitting on a post-war Madill Yarder chassis built with Sherman M4A2 tank components... now has a 30-speed 'semi-automatic' (dual transmission), a 6v71 Detroit diesel, and a massive winch driven off a hydraulic pump powered by a 4-71T Detroit under the hood.

I believe the Allison torque converter adaptor ring should be bolted to a proper drive flex plate and not a manual clutch flywheel as you have here. There will be no room to allow the converter to balloon (expand) while its building hydraulic pressure. Good chance the converter could crack and/or drive itself backwards into the transmission causing damage and/or push the engine crank shaft hard against the thrust bearing wearing it out in short order. You can get a flex plate from an older Detroit powered MCI or Provost bus being scraped. Please look into it before many run hours accumulated.

Can't wait to see that thing running! Yeah that 4-71 would overflow the engine bay of that pickup. There was a guy around here back in the '80s who shoe- horned a 4-53 into a 74 international 3/4 ton 4 by 4. Front axle wasn't quite up to the challenge of the extra weight. Drove a late 70s GMC, 6v-92 with an Allison. When it was fully loaded you put your foot to the floor and waited for it to start moving.

Hi Rich, awesome project! I was thinking an Allison automatic was the way to go and there you are installing one! Creative thinking on the engine/transmission adaptation but I'm not too sure how long that will live? The torque converter nose would need piloting to the flywheel and I think you'd need a proper flexplate. But maybe you're swapping in another drivetrain soon and just looking to prove the concept of the automatic? Would hate to see that transmission getting ruined, it does seem like a nicely rebuilt unit?
