Your paint job was fine. If you have access to an airbrush what you can try next time if you feel like it is make the surface white. airbrush white around the areas the light will hit, then do the same airbrushing with a bright blue like pylar glaciar or tyran blue After that you hit it with another highlighting of white in the "heat zones" as well as edge highlighting sharp areas that are being affected by the glow. Trust me the results are amazing.

This is one of the most helpful videos on mini-painting I've seen. I hope other youtube artists model this sort of thing. I remember asking myself while watching specifically the parts about pushing the contrast "Oh, that's all it is, but look at the difference!" But you don't always see that when you're watching a pro go from start-to-finish. Thanks so much!

I feel like with the first model, I see what they were going for. Kind of an object shadows highlight. The part of the head right behind the headdress was in shadow despite being a high point, could have added an outline of the feathers to highlight rather than completely highlight, but that wouldn't have been fast at all. Might have been the same on the torso? Like the big chin causing some shadows on the upper chest. Your additions are definitely an improvement but I think the original artist had some unique ideas I want to try now

Something that drastically improved my understanding of painting muscles and skin was how you demonstrated taking the highlight all the way up to the connecting muscle. I Choudhary figure out why my models had a weird muscle appearance, but seeing how you painted the frogs highlights really drove the point on how to make it look more natural. What a small tip, but a huge impact on the results. Thank you for showing that!

@JeuneWave3 ай бұрын
great tips overall! always nice to have an external look on your paintjobs to improve and you guys sure know what you're talking about. I do however feel like the ork was kinda disrespected in its own regards, you took that brownish grimdark orc and made it back to a generic one, i think you could've done pretty much the same and still manage to keep the original feeling of this guy cause this ork's owner will either have to repaint this mini or his whole army for it to fit back in

4:10- So the flower crown/hat/whatever doesn’t create a shadow? I guess not, if the light source was directly above it……
@BloomThat5 ай бұрын
It's a great observation. Some of this was artistic choice, but also the "light source direction" can sometimes benefit from being unrealistic for minis being viewed 360 degrees, like for game pieces. Front-on viewing only, you might make slightly different choices.
@AcoylteKraven825 ай бұрын
@@BloomThat true! But the only reason I was asking and pointing it out was because I was wondering if he actually had a connection with this person?!? Because if could have been what they were going for, but it kinda sounded like he was saying “there was NO reason for a shadow there” to me……………… so I was curious!?! Anything new I can learn I will try to get the most out of it!!!
@jorgemontero63845 ай бұрын
@@AcoylteKraven82 Ultimately miniature painting moves into set photography skills, in the sense that you don't just want the light to be realistic, but to place the lights in the right places for the miniature to look their best. I can make a lot of terrible pictures that aren't caused by the light being fake (as it's always real, it's a camera!), or the subject being bad, but the light sources being the wrong hue, or placed in locations that don't help the subject look good. A lot of lighting you see in stills, and even in movies, includes plenty of secondary lights that you would never find in real life: See basically every night scene, or anything lit by candlelight. So can I get a light setup that makes the crown create a shadow? Sure! But does it make the subject look better? Probably not
@AcoylteKraven825 ай бұрын
@@jorgemontero6384 Ummmmm, ok……… I can’t tell if you are answering a reply I will leave in the future or if you were trying to reply to someone else’s comment that kinda had something to do with lighting also and something went wrong or your just messing with me?!? Yeah, I get taken a picture of anything is like taking a picture of a mini! But at no point was I talking any studio lighting or lighting to be able to film a movie or show!?! I was talking about the NORMAL lighting when you walk outside and the sun is in your face, where would the shadows fall!?! Like in the case of the model in question…… I’m not asking how the light should fall on it in his studio at his paint desk! I’m asking about the lighting if that creature was REAL AND ON THE BATTLEFIELD!!! But honestly I’m not sure where you were going with that?!? Since you were replying to the 2nd message I left (for the obvious reason! Unless you’re new to KZbin) but were talking a bit more about the original comment, but that was corrected in the 2nd part!!! But I don’t know!?!

That was my thoughts exactly, though most of the highlights did look better in the after, but I agree it wasn't perfect still
@Sitrec5 ай бұрын
Kind of wish you'd push contrast by working with brightness and shadoes without increasing saturation on the orc. It kind of misses the point when you change the art style completely. Not every mini has to be oversaturated like crazy even though that's the mini painting meta for some reason.
@caspianbchalphy5 ай бұрын
I admit I don’t really care if my paint jobs look good or bad as long as that pass that 3+ color rule and don’t look like crap when you’re playing with them on the tabletop that’s good enough for me. It's a bit of both, where the deepest creases are you want to stay dark, but the shallower separations you want to join with your mid-tones. And if those points are closest to the light source, you can also join with your highlight. Hope my ramblings are helpful.
