I think it's hilarious when Guntubers say most 380 users are disabled or have weak hands. I shoot with a small club of mostly marine vets (I am not one of them), who boast that they shoot 380 because they just didn't get caught up by all the 9mm hype, and it's a more enjoyable round to shoot, while still being plenty powerful to down an attacker.
@127AFS Жыл бұрын
It's a similar situation with me! I'm a younger person with fairly strong hands, and I wouldn't describe myself as recoil sensitive. But I still don't have a problem carrying a P365 in 380 every day. Why? Because it is actually enjoyable to shoot, which means I'm excited to practice with it more often. It is also so easier to be accurate with it, especially shooting one handed. This gives me greater peace of mind carrying it compared to a 9mm that would forfeit most of these advantages for just for a little "more power." To feel the same way about a 9mm, it would need to be bigger, which ruins the concealment ease I enjoy with the 380. Using +p Underwood Xtreme Defenders, I personally feel like I'm well armed for the majority of 2 legged threats.

Physics guy here. Instead of comparing the slide velocity to the muzzle energy of each ammo (one half mass times velocity squared), have you considered comparing the slide velocity to the momentum (mass times velocity) instead? The momentum imparted on the slide from the round being fired should be a better determining factor with the velocity of the slide due to the conservation of momentum. You could even calculate the momentum imparted on the slide from the round being fired by calculating the momentum of the round and dividing it by the mass of the slide to find its theoretical velocity. Lighter and faster rounds tend to have more energy but slower and heavier rounds tend to have more momentum. That might be why the heavier but slower federal load worked instead of the lighter and faster one, more momentum.
@LuckyGunner Жыл бұрын
Yes, momentum would probably be a better predictor of slide velocity. However, an observation that was inadvertently cut from the video is that while low slide velocity leads to ejection failures, the inverse is not always true. Some loads with high slide velocity also had poor ejection. So while it might be useful to be able to predict slide velocity, there is still no guarantee that a momentum calculation would automatically lead us to the most reliable loads.

I'd suggest impulse as a better measurement. The slower bullet has a slightly longer dwell time in the barrel, more time with higher pressure should impart more force on the slide in the end, and thus a higher velocity.

I have this 365-380 and I love shooting it: Holosun 407k, Wilson Combat grips, WC weights, 12 round mags. I mostly shoot S&B, magtech, and fiocchi. My first box was an off brand of ammo and that didn't work well, but everything else has been perfect. It also shoots Sig V-Crown 90gr JHP ammo for short barrels just fine. I have almost no grip strength, and this gun is a joy to shoot and it never has a problem. - I also have an XL 9mm with the same set up, and that gun has never had a malfunction. - Thanks for this video. Any luck with Speer Lawman and gold dots? I'm not sure if you had a chance to try that brand. I'm only asking because I've been on the fence with picking up a 365 in .380 and I have a ton of speer ammo. Thanks.
@SomethingCompass Жыл бұрын
@@lecruset I didn't fire Speer Lawman or gold dot, but I am confident that this ammo will be fine. Next time I go to my local gun store I am going to pick some up. I fired all of the brands of practice and self-defense ammo that were available during the great ammo shortage, and all of it worked fine except Ammo Incorporated. But that was the first box I fired, and the problem could have been me getting used to the gun. And like all Sigs, there is the usual break-in period as the springs get broken in. It took maybe 300 rounds to break in the gun properly, and about 100-200 rounds for each mag. I went with Sig ammo for self defense because it is designed for short barrels and I have seen good test results on KZbin. I got nice tight groups with that ammo, but all other brands were fine. My experience is that Sigs can be picky with lower-tier brands. - The 380 will be difficult to rack when new, but it gets very easy after the gun has been broken in. - My XL fired every shot without any malfunctions, but some off-brands have a point of impact that is significantly off the point of aim. All of the well known brands have been fine. - Both the 380 and the XL feel much better to me with the WC grips and the 3oz weights. They feel more balanced that way, and I can get a much better grip (I have almost no grip strength). The 380 is the fun gun to shoot at the range, but I trust it completely in a self defense situation. I was surprised at how tight the groups were out of that tiny barrel, and how easy it was to get follow up shots. Also, the 12 round mag fits my hand, but that might not be enough space for people with very large hands. - You can also put the XL grip on the 380, and swap out the base-plates on the 12 round 380 mag to fit it. I have also fired my 12 and 15 round 9mm mags through my 380 without a single malfunction. I am going to experiment with a macro grip whenever WC offers it for sale, but as of today there isn't a 17 round 380 mag available, so I will be stuck with using a 9mm mag on a 380 gun. - If you can find a 365-380 to rent at a range I highly recommend it. The selling point for me is that it is a joy to shoot, and as I get older I will eventually transition to it as my only self-defense carry gun. - Good luck with whichever 380 you eventually buy.

Just to add another experience here: I *DO* have an optic on mine, and was experiencing a failure or two every 50 rounds (PMC and Remington) until around 350 rounds. That's pretty high for a 'break-in' period, and one failure to extract was so bad that I had to use pliers to get the shell out (the extractor was grabbing it, but it wasn't enough) I really did not care for the 9mm P365 and want this to work. I'm up to +400 rounds now, and just an assumption off of 10 rounds of Underwood +P and Civil Defense +P, I would assume it will like the overpressured rounds. Hearing this channel claim hollowpoints all worked is comforting, but I did have failures with PMC while he didn't. :(

Great video. I have found that both the P238 and P365-380 want the ammo loaded near the max range in the reloading manual. Once you do that, they cycle reliably. For other calibers, I usually stay near the low end of the charge range with no problems. I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out why both of the .380s were so prone to malfunctioning. Loading hot solves problems for both with the P238 generally accepting lower charge weights. I've done all my testing with 90 and 95 gr projectiles of various profiles. Loading near the max charge weight solves the problem for all bullet shapes. For carry, I have settled on the Lehigh 90gr penetrator. It cycles flawlessly in both so long as you load near max. For .380, I think the penetrator is good compromise between over penetration with FMJ and HP bullets not expanding. Note that Lehigh says the 90gr *defender* is NOT designed for use in the .380 and should not be used. Loading for these .380s was the most frustrating thing I have encountered in 20 years of reloading. But I think I figured it out. Also, the experience with this 365 makes me realize that if I get one in 9mm, I'm going for the XL.

Didn't have any issues with any hardball in either even doing my limp wrist test. after a few hundred rounds it seems to be more forgiving, but I found some other stuff it likes just fine so sticking with that since I trust it. All that to say: 100% agree on test your carry ammo a lot. I always do a limp test with a few mags like you did and if I don't get a perfect score I try different ammo. Not cheap, but need to practice with the firearm anyway so two birds and all that. 3 birds if you also use the failures as an op to practice clearing jams. Also retest as the gun wears. What it likes today my be an issue tomorrow. I have a suspicion that they just went overkill on the recoil spring. Have a number of Sigs and seems to be a not uncommon theme with them. On 320 in particular even with hot 9mm the brass just dripped out. Not sure who makes their springs but they seem to be all over the place.

To test which loads will have the most trouble with loose grips, you could build a rail system that has a break-away stop that only hold as strong as the trigger pull is. Once the trigger is pulled, the recoil force should overcome the strength of the switch and let the gun slide free on the rail. This would simulate the most extreme of limp-wrist scenarios.
@DWalter.27 Жыл бұрын
No, the gun needs gripped at the correct-ish spot. Not letting it rotate up like it does would change the dynamic

Cool. Ammo even on the 9mm can have an effect. I have seen many guns that favor certain ammo, so the Sig 380 is not unique in that aspect. I'd love to see Underwood 380 +p load tested and how it does in the Sig.

My 365 380 hasn't had ejection issues, but it has had failures to fire with one particular ammo brand, Freedom Munitions. I think the primers were bad, because I didn't have the same issues with Sig or Winchester ammo. I had the same FTFs with my Ruger LCP 2 but only with Freedom Munitions. I've solved the issue by simply not buying any more Freedom Munitions in 380. I haven't had FTFs with Freedom Munitions in 45acp.

Wouldn’t it help to drop the recoil spring by 1-2 pounds? Seems like that would speed the slide up (as long as it wasn’t too light and beating the gun). Seems to me like many pistols are oversprung these days.

There is a difference between energy and impulse. The impulse determines the recoil and thus also the speed with which the slide is opened and the cartridge case is ejected. Energy = mass * velocity squared / 2 Impulse = mass * velocity (or is it called momentum in english?) You can see for impulse the mass has a greater influence. (I'm German, I don't know if I've used the right expressions - sorry!) (Sorry, I just saw buzz6925 wrote the same)

I don't know if sig offers it, but perhaps a lighter recoil spring would help mitigate the failures in the light for caliber selection of bullets.

The heavy-for-caliber train of thought makes me think that slide velocity is a function of momentum, not energy, of the projectile. Kinetic energy depends on the square of the velocity - momentum is purely a function of mass and the velocity. More momentum in the bullet = higher slide velocity, maybe?
@LuckyGunner Жыл бұрын
That sounds plausible

Not sure if this was mentioned, but would it help the cycling without the red dot? Not a great solution of so but i remember seeing the walther 22magnum have issues with the red dot on the gun.
@LuckyGunner Жыл бұрын
It's possible. The optic weighs less than an ounce, so it doesn't seem likely. Since it shipped from the factory with that optic installed, the recoil spring really should be calibrated to function with it
@PickledShark10 ай бұрын
@@LuckyGunner Still, would be great to test that.
@chestersnapdragonmcphistic579 Жыл бұрын
Slide velocity might be more related to bullet momentum rather than energy. You might think of a gunshot as a reverse collision. Momentum is conserved in collisions, but kinetic energy isn't (in real-world scenarios). Mass is "worth" the same as velocity to momentum, as opposed to kinetic energy where velocity is "worth" more, which explains why the heavy bullets gave higher slide velocity.
@keithgraham9547 Жыл бұрын
With the Glock 42, same problem snd it eas all blamed on "limp wristing,' which actually is not a real thing. If your grip was a half-inch low on yhe beaver tail, I got FTE. Ove the grip up and it ran perfectly. These are really design flaws. Just too much slide snd spring for a light cartridge. Which shows the difficulty in producing a usuable autoloader with very light recoil. Got to be some energy somewhere. Either you have some recoil, or the design gets compromised.
@LuckyGunner Жыл бұрын
I have heard that Glock alleviated that with some tweaks to the design and that later samples run much better. Haven't been able to confirm it, though. The one we have is from the very first production run and it does have issues if you don't use a sufficiently firm grip.

@@LuckyGunner I used to be comfortable carrying a 380 or even Jimenez Arms six-shot 22LR. I disposed of them, and usually carry 45acp and 357 SIG because my concern has gone from muggers, to perps at longer ranges in riots or crazies with rifles and armor. Here's something I'd like to see you text. I don't trust 9mm, I think it is way underperforming unless you buy expensive "hyperammo," which just negated all the supposed advantages. In my own tests, short -barrel carry pistols, using three brands/loads of 115 grain or ordinary ammo, I started getting lots of fliers that are definitely NOT me from 18 yards or more. From rest, at 33 yards, I shot 24-round "groups" that were low and left by: 8" 11" 12". The 8" group had the most variance, some dropped 24". I did NOT get this with 357 Magnum, 40 S&W, 357 SIG, or 45 ACP. I postulate a lot of regular 9mm has huge QC variances, and light powder loads. Under ten yards, we blame ourselves for poor groups. At longer ranges, the variance and light loads show up. Could you recreate the test?

Maybe a slightly lighter spring, just not so light it doesn't retract back fast enough for the next trigger pull. Look up DPM spring rod kit - soft version, should fix the issue. Uses a lighter spring while still stopping the slide from slamming back too hard. Slide would go back faster, ejecting more reliable, and the recoil will reduce too.

Since we are not dealing with a lot of power here to overcome extra forces, I am just wondering if the addition of the optics changed the weight or center mass of the slide enough to slow it down? Perhaps the recoil spring is a tad heavy, check the weight of pull to rack the slide. Maybe even trim one coil from the spring.

I am curious, is the ejector in the same position as the 9mm P365? It seems to me that since a 380 case is shorter, the ejector could be further forward by that difference of length, giving 380 cases a better chance of hitting it.
