I found and tried your fix and... eureka! Our GE water never froze up for ten years until now. An observation: our freezer was nearly empty. This lead to nothing blocking or dispersing the cold air blowing directly on the area under the ice chute. My guess is that with the top shelf loaded, the air doesn't constantly hit that area. Whatever, after warming the area under the chute with a hairdryer so double sided carpet tape would stick, we are now down one pot holder. Sometimes the simple fixes are thge best! Thank you

Thanks for this tip. Our GE fridge water dispenser had been freezing occasionaly and then over the years freezing more and more until now when it freezes every hour or two. By adding the pot holder inside the door the problem went away immediayely. Genius! thanks again

This sir, fixed our issue and has stayed fixed. The hot pad fell off, the water line froze within hours. I affixed it with more intense adhesive and it defrosted just with the ambient temperature.

Thank you, Good Sir. We've been struggling with this exact problem off and on for years now and have searched in vain for a fix... Until your brilliant video. Eureka! We knew there was a freeze problem, but couldn't find any schematics or diagrams that showed exactly where the line ran and how to fix it. Thanks to you, we've got the exact location AND the remedy. We bought a simple 3/4" 8X12 self-adhesive foam pad on Amazon, placed it over the flat spot on the interior door as shown in your video and Voila! It's fixed. Thank you!

Same problem, same fridge. I had my doubts as to this simple fix and if it would work. However, your scientific method was convincing and I had nothing to lose. Not having a suitable pot holder, I used a 10x10 inch square of some foam core board (like kids would use at the science fair) and some "3M Exterior Attachment Tape, " just fancy double-sided tape I had left over from a car project. I opened the freezer, warmed the plastic to room temperature to remove condensation, attached the form core board, defrosted the line one last time using the warm water in a small tube technique and I'm THREE DAYS with a working water line. No reason to believe it won't continue working. If it does, I'll add another layer of foam core board! Thank you, sir.

Dr. Schweinzgruber ! I have the same “exact”refrigerator ! Same year. I did the insulation method you recommended on the inside of the black appliqué panel, using insulation from my furnace, and it has completely solved the problem. I am also an American engineer working at Bosch in the US. Your fix was great. I believe the problem only comes later in the life of the refrigerator, because the little bit of insulation that they put in that section, has completely shriveled up. Thus allowing too much cold transfer through the door too the waterline inside. Your method to add more insulation, allows the warmer kitchen air to be in better contact with the water line, under the nozzle area. Perfekt ! Danke ! Send me your email, and I’ll send you a picture of my patch work. 👍

Our GE fridge's water line used to freeze every other day. Yes, unfreezing is easy with a small tube (or straw) with syringe attached and injecting warm water into the water line from the front, but still a hassle that has to be done many times during the week. What eventually worked for me was using a bubble wrap foil insulation which I used three layers of and taped all four sides with aluminum tape. Where this video shows the oven mitt (6:48), I covered the entire side and a bit more to the top with bubble foil insulation, in three layers, then taped all sides with aluminum tape. Water-line is frost-free for over a month now. I wish GE had properly insulated the fridge. I wonder how many bought new fridges because of this issue alone.

For six years, we had a plastic string in our GE refrigerator water dispenser. However, when we had to replace the freezer thermostat two days ago because of a defrost problem, the water started dispensing like new again. It has been two days since the replacement, and the water is still flowing well. I wanted to share this experience so that others can also consider this option for their refrigerator.
@nikolaimironenko67773 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing this information! What exact thermostat are you replaced?
@fredklintworth111423 күн бұрын
It's the defrost thermostat. And the refrigerator is GE model GSH25JFTFWW.
@fredklintworth111423 күн бұрын
And buy a genuine GE defrost thermostat. I used a couple of cheap ones previously, but they only lasted a year; and they did not fix the water dispenser freezing problem.

Thank you so much! This happens every winter and fixes itself in the spring. So sick of it. I used you method using boing water in a tall Yeti cup with towels and hot pot handle to hold the heat in. After 40 minutes it was fixed! Place the pot holder on the inside and so far so good . Great advice!

Used .095 weed Wacker plastic cord up the water dispenser , took several tries to get full 3-4 feet up fridge water line! Then it started working again after several days and a dozen other videos!!! Thank you. No one else suggested rotor rooting the line!

But it is not a permanent fix, as the line will freeze again.

Thank you, Dr Schweinsgruber - a standard 7 1/2" square potholder did the trick! The water dispenser has been working for a full week now. Wish I'd seen this before bringing in a technician who recommended a new door for $2000.

Thanks for the tip. Instead of the pot holder, I cut a one inch thick piece of 8"X10" pink extruded foam with a hot wire cutter, covered it with some white film heat activated glue backing model airplane covering and attached it to the door with 3M trim double-sided tape.

Thank you, Dr Schweinsgruber ; This definitely resolves the issue , i used a piece cut to shape from a foil back type of windshield sun shade @$6 and a roll of gorilla glue double sided tape...it definitely looks to be a permanent fix... Next option i was planning; drill small hole and fill with spray insulation foam...

In this region where the fabric was placed to insulate, there is a hidden resistance that is responsible for heating the door, it is to freeze in excess!

Ge sells a heater kit that tapes up right next to the water dispenser tube I had that problem. bought the kit installed it within 15 minutes never had a problem again in about 7 years

The root cause of our frequent freeze-up was the small solenoid that pulls the ice dispenser flap open had corrosion build-up which created friction that prevented the flaps spring from being able to snap the flap closed after ice had been dispensed. With the flap partially open, cold air leaks out near the water tube and made it freeze. It is easy to pop the control panel off, remove a few screws, remove solenoid and clean/lubricate it.

This worked great but right after I did it I also replaced the light bulb. I notice in your video that you do not have a light bulb installed. Could be the extra heat from the little light bulb keeps the line clear. Funniest thing? I keep our Sriracha in the same spot on the door!!

I like your repair, however due to the tape possibly not sticking I’m going to take the inside door panel off and insulate around the water line with refrigerant line insulation. Also I don’t know if u mentioned or if u knew but they sell an inline heater for GE refrigerators for less than $10. I have a Frigidaire unfortunately

Wow! We have been fighting thermodynamics and the physics that comes with it. Thank you - thank you for giving us the correct answer to this annoying problem which started very recently. I used a slightly different tact - I inserted 3 inch thick insulation into a zip-lock bag [the size of the area of concern] and attached it as you described to the inside of the door. Worked like a charm - PS I don't believe in charms. Only Jesus and His One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church! Pax et Bonum! and thanks again!

Use a Silicone lubricant on the gasket. Vaseline (a petroleum product) will eventually destroy the rubber gasket - also a petroleum product.

And, what is the reason my water dispenser is so slow. 12 ounce glass... 47 seconds. I hate it. Always done it. New filter and still! Don't know what else to do
@johntinsley1303 ай бұрын
I had the same problem, and replacing the water filter was a wise idea. And like you, the problem remained. There is little else in the refrigerator's plumbing to restrict the water flow except *maybe* a faulty inlet valve assembly. . So I looked towards the 1/4" copper supply line. What I found was the cut-off valve that was tapped into the cold water line under the kitchen sink was flaky. It had a spot when opening it that FELT like it was fully opened, when in fact it was only very partially open. 1/2 a turn later the problem was fixed. There are other possibilities like a kinked copper line or just a downright poor tap. But even a restricted line will make ice just fine. I'd bet on the supply, not the fridge itself. And just in case - I've got TWO cut-offs on the same line. I added the second for convenience when I'm behind the fridge. I'm sure I'm not the only one to do it.
