I grew up in NYC. I simply can't believe you left your bike out on a rack. My bike shop told me: "If you want to leave your bike out anywhere, buy one lock for each 5 minutes you intend to be away from it." Super glad you got your bike back, great story!

Haha, that's a great saying! It was also locked with an (albeit bulky) cable lock, and I have since invested in a chain lock. Thanks for watching!

I had my bicycle stolen while I was a middle school student living with parents in Panama. I got in the bad habit of not locking it up at home and someone stole it from our carport. Six months later my dad and are driving past the police station and my dad sees a bike with blue packing tape wrapped around it in the impound lot. We go in and talk with one of the officers. Long story short, three thieves had stolen my bike then one of them called the police claiming that one of his buddies stole it from him. The police impounded the bike until someone could bring a receipt for the bike. We went home and dug through boxes of receipts until my mom found it and two days later my dad took the receipt back down to the police station and got my bicycle back. Thank you for triggering a 50+ year old memory. BTW, I'm glad you got your bicycle back!

I feel your pain. My bike was also stolen in Toronto in 2020. I made a quick stop the Michaels at Richmond and John around 2pm on a Saturday. I come out and I don't see my bike on the bike parking pole thing. But I do see some cops there because some good Samaritan reported the theft to the police. I filed a report but I knew I wasn't going to see that bike again. It didn't turn up on Kijiji or anywhere. I bought a new bike a few weeks later and upgraded to a much better/more expensive lock. I still do get nervous leaving my bike parked somewhere for too long.

And this is why I have at least 2 lock on my bike if I’m leaving it outside anywhere for longer than 10 minutes. A solid d lock and a heavy chain lock, plus a cable to secure the front wheel, both wheels on through axles not quick releases (more secure plus through axles last longer). But in general I try not to leave it locked outside.

Morley: "Toronto is the bike theft capital of the world" Argentina: "Hold my beer" We not only get our bikes stolen all the time here, in some cities it even gets towed by the city because it's been "parked chained to a public tree". They cut the chain off, take the bike and if you weren't there at the time, you don't even realize it was towed, not stolen.

Interesting thought exercise, at what price is the tipping point where the bolt cutters become expensive enough that you just pay the man and don’t even mention the theft? As a non-confrontational / risk averse person, myself, it would certainly cross my mind. I think he wanted $130? If the cutters were $130 do you just buy them anyway as an FU to the thief?
