Have you narrowed it own to a specific cylinder or bank? I would first pull spark plug wires one by one and find out if it’s all one specific cylinder. If it is one specific cylinder missing it’s easier the coil pack, wire, plug , injector or worse case an internal issue. Or possibly wiring issue in the harness to that coil pack. Sounds like at one point it started to clear up so that tells me it’s most Likely NOT internal. If it’s one bank it’s typically not a fuel pump, mass air flow or any other sensor that controls the entire engine. Because if it were one of those it would misfire on both banks, not just one bank or one cylinder. I wouldn’t rule out a possible ecu use, but the fact that it started to clear up makes me thing that’s also not it. Hope you get it figured out though. Love the cars.

Check base timing, I believe it's supposed to be 5-7 BTDC with the timing pin grounded. Look up the proper procedure. This is very important on these cars and DSM's. The Mitsubishi mafs can be very picky sometimes. Honestly you're not supposed to spray anything on the sensors because they're so sensitive. It's like a 50/50 chance of it working or failing if you spray it. On my Galant I was chasing MAF issues for the longest time. I swapped out multiple MAFs, wiped the sensor with q-tips, etc. Turned out the wiring in the connector was loose and losing connection. It would run fine after servicing it and plugging it back in. When doing a mild pull the harness would tug and the connection would get loose again. I ended up cutting a portion off and splicing in a new maf pigtail. I haven't had any MAF issues since like February of this year. You can try and look into your wiring if you can. Our older Mitsus are catching up in age

What’s your wideband doing when it runs rough? Is it going lean? May need to datalog to see what’s really going on, you could see if your O2 sensors are cycling and fuel trims updating.
@darkmatterm4a12 жыл бұрын
Hey Miguel. I see you have an upgraded FPR. What is your fuel pressure at when the car is at idle? Also, is the car on a stock ECU? It might be useful to try another computer. Leaking capacitors on the board is very common on 1st gen 3000GTs, but it can also happen on the 2nd gen cars too. Do you smell a rotten fish-type smell in the driver's footwell (right next to the throttle pedal)?
@MiguelDsm2 жыл бұрын
Around 40 psi at idle. I would have to check on the smell, but the Ecu is on the list of possibilities. Leaning towards ptu first and then checking out the Ecu
@darkmatterm4a12 жыл бұрын
@@MiguelDsm Okay. PTU is a good place to start, but I don't think it's the root cause of your issue because you had some improvements after that O2 sensor install. This leads me to believe that your car is running really rich and the ECU is having issues adjusting fuel trims/timing. Luckily, yours is a 98 so you'll easily be able to use a ChromeECU on it. Finding a turbo 98 or 99 ECU is going to be very difficult, if not impossible.

I’m on this same journey with mine lol. My EVO is down and my Civic. My stealth is running better after changing PTU cleaning maf , changing spark plugs and coils …. But when it’s cold it’s misfiring it warms up it drives but full throttle it hiccups
that intermittent sputtering or miss really sounds like a weak spark plug wire, spark plug or ground. i'd recommend looking into that. i had a similar issue and turned out it was a failing plug wire.

You need to physically inspect from one end to the other each connector on the wiring harness for the engine control/monitoring systems to the ECU. or simply replace the entire wiring harness and the connectors with new ones (not with new old stock)... you probably have one or more bad/intermittent connections and the green creeping death that is ruining communication between sensors and the ECU, these problems cannot be seen unless you physically strip them down. while there you also need to inspect the ECU circuit board for bad soldering connections. Ive seen a few engine compartment control boards that had issues like this and were difficult to fix because the circuit boards are conformally coated.

If you think that the ptu or the coil packs might be dying on your car, there is a kit out there that removes the ptu and the coil packs. In return it gives you coil on plugs along with coil packs that are new age tech when compared to what was on the car from OEM spec.
