@@WatchJRGo Extremely lucky there was no knock. Hopefully that holds out after the Ninja gets a look at the bearing seat on the crank. I recently spent MULTIPLES of that quote to do rod bearings on an E46 M3 (and a lot of preventative stuff you may as well do when doing that much work). Once that knock starts there's no saving the crank and that of course means full engine-out. $3K for damn near anything on an M car is a cheap repair. The car will be a steal if it ends up being sub-$10K, let alone sub-$8K.

They are not that fragile but people run them 8000 rpm all day, don't follow maintenance according to bmw, put cheap oil out of standards, cheap filters etc and spend all day hammering them sideways. What are people expecting? of course they gonna fail. I'm surprised the gearbox isn't blown too...probably the previous owners never did maintenance to it...it's a miracle the gearbox survived. I had 4 bmw's in all my life, always did their maintenance myself, always according to bmw, used bmw workshop manuals, recommended oils/filters, bmw insta D/P, eSYS for programming and errors etc. Never had 1 single failure in more than 20 years.

That body is clean, I'm guessing though since it's from the same year range as the E90 3 Series that the car knows basically everything that has a wire going to it and is very unhappy when something doesn't match somewhere along there. Was a pain when I converted my E92 328i Wagon into a 335i, basically stripped them both down to nothing and did a complete swap of everything so the computer wouldn't know the difference. May not have had to do something that radical but I had to tear the wagon down to swap over the interior anyway so two birds one stone.
