You mentioned something in this video which is very underrated, and an old mechanic's trick that was passed on down to me from my dad: the use of rope. I learned to stuff the cylinder with nylon rope, and I never used air ever again. Air sucks as you saw in this video. Too many variables fighting you. Whether it's a tiny leak somewhere, your equipment that can't keep up, the engine wanting to spin on you, or as what happened to you here, the entire valve and spring assembly compressing because the keepers are stuck from the years. Rope makes life much easier for you, and it's cheaper! I been doing this 21 years now, and it's my go to method.

just did mine on a 2006 ML 500 with the m113 engine, absolutely no need to mess with ropes or air compressors, just make sure you rotate each piston to TDC while changing the seals. I used a thick cable tie inserted in the spark plug hole to check for TDC. Once you do this, the valves can only go in like 1-2 cm before contacting the piston and the valve stem sticks out at least 2-3 cm, zero chance to drop it inside the cylinder. It's very important to hammer the tops of the valves to loosen the keepers before you remove them, they tend to be kinda stuck and reduce the chance to bend the valve while pressing the spring to remove the keepers.

I was taught to rotate the cylinder your working on to top center, apply air pressure. Than way if a valve loses seal it cannot fall into cylinder as the piston itself will block it. As a safety precaution. Outside of that, most informative video, and second replacing all rubber hoses, it's not they may break, they will.

Excellent video.. There's no way I could have done it without watching this. The first two seals were kind of spooky because I knew if the valve fell into the cylinder I was doomed. But after the first few I gained some confidence and it wasn't that bad. I hooked up my air compressor and it went fairly smoothly. I put shop towels all around all the openings in the head cuz I'm the type who would drop one of the keepers in one of the holes and spend 1/2 the day looking for it.. Finally that last exhaust valve, there was no way my particular tool would fit and I could do it properly. The top of the spring compressor tool would hit the heat shield and I could NOT angle it properly. I finally just cut the compressor tool in 1/2 with an angle grinder. Then it fit perfectly.. Of course it makes doing the intake valves impossible in the future, but for $50 I can get another kit. Better than spending thousands if I drop the exhaust valve into the cylinder.

Put the piston you're working on at TDC, that way the valve cannot fall in. In fact it will only fall a couple of mm even without rope or compressed air 😉

100% agree with you on going genuine Mercedes valve cover gasket. I believe fcp used to use elring gaskets, and I had the same thing happen as you with fcp’s kit (which they have since changed to have factory gaskets). The elring ones leaked immediately. No leaks since having the factory ones!
@OnlyKelp Жыл бұрын
Correct. FCP hasn’t sold that brand for a while I believe but I had bought a set while they were still being sold and they leaked not that long after. The genuine Mercedes ones aren’t that much more $$$ and they won’t leak. Not for a while anyways 😆. Luckily they come with lifetime replacement from fcp anyways 🤷♂️

I used 85psi on my air compressor to keep the valves up. Some people say that’s too much, others say they use more. 85psi worked great for me though. Another method you can try is feeding rope through the spark plug hole and turning the engine until the piston presses the rope against the valves if you don’t have a compressor. Either way will work. Good luck!

I did this on my 210 e55 last month, seems every 112/113 start to loose their valve seal now. Btw, I also use compressor on passenger side, and can’t brake the keeper on driver side, so I switched to rope method afterward. IMO, rope method works much better in my case, less noise, engine won’t turn, less stressful, and break every keeper flawlessly.

I've done valve stem seals on other engines but the process is the same. It's not exactly what I would call fun but sometimes it is necessary. I've heard all the tricks about using rope and barring the engine over, etc. but it's a waste of time if you have at least minimal shop air. You can put a squeeze clamp on the end of the valve while you are getting parts ready if one is that paranoid. I have an 03 S430 with about 185K on it. It doesn't burn any oil past what is normal. I'm about 1qt low after 10k miles. Hopefully I don't have to do valve stem seals anytime soon.

Once I took the breathers off I noticed the little pinhole where the air is supposed to come out of was blocked by a bit of sludge in the breather chamber. Whatever car the new valve covers came from must not have been cared for all that well. I cleaned the inside of the valve cover and got any sludge and debris out and reinstalled them on the car. Once you get as far as I did with the tear down in this video you just have to remove one more bolt that holds the sprocket for the timing chain to the camshaft. Just make sure to put a couple zip ties around the chain/sprocket so you don’t mess up timing. Once it’s disconnected, the camshaft lifts out quite easily.
