Fixing One-Off Pokémon Evolution Items

With hundreds of Pokémon out there you're gonna have some weird, out of place evolution methods, sometimes resulting in a unique item that literally does nothing else. So let's aim to improve the situation by making the items more useful, or getting rid of them completely and have these Pokémon evolve ANY other way...

We need an NPC named "the Trader" in the games that will trade any pokemon with the user and then trade back immediately, so you just go to him when you need to trade evolve.

Absolutely yes! Though I think to balance it, it would have to be a decent bit into the game, maybe a bit less than halfway, and probably cost money. Maybe a different currency than Pokedollars, just so it isn’t a free way to get stupidly powerful Pokémon before the 3rd gym.

Trade evolutions are a pain, especially in Sword and Shield because you either need another Switch or someone trustworthy, moreso when it comes to trade evolution shinies

@@TheEmeraldWeirdo that is true but not everyone wants to catch the trade evolutions in the wild and loves to have ghastly and train it up to huanter and then has to get someone they trust to trade because they put a lot of work for this pokemon. Best solution put a NPC that trades and trades back your pokemon to evolve are they could have the PC have that function to get more use sense we don't have to keep going to it to exchange pokemon.

@@shadowwizard2383 I understand that a lot of fans prefer raise their Pokemon right up from scratch, but that's just how the game works: if you want a Gengar, you have to trade with someone. The whole point of the trading mechanic was to encourage people to interact with each other. Bringing people together was one of Satoshi Tajiri's main goals when creating the original games, and it'd be disrespectful to remove one of the features intended to do that just because a relative few fans find it inconvenient.

for gen 3, sometimes i change trade evolution items the way you mentioned for itemless, i make the trade evolution obtainable as early as level 1 for the sake of accuracy. after all, you can always evolve them whenever you want

The problem is Pokemon is always meant to have multiplayer as a core concept of the franchise, even in the main story. Same reason why version exclusives exist. I guess they could give a post-game thing so this could be possible. But seems improbable as I said due to it being there since the start (then again the same can be said with the full roster) and it isn't as marketable.

I have a theory of my own that someone makes the Pokedex entries, while another person makes the evolution method and they don't work together. I think Gamefreak wants to get rid of Trade Evolutions as a whole or generally make them more accesible and that is why most of them are catchable in the wild in Sword and Shield.

You could’ve also used Pokémon Go as a further bit of evidence as they decided to scrap one-off evolution items in Gens 4 and onward and just create “Sinnoh Stones” and “Unova Stones,” etc.

I think Pokemon should evolve via stones too, aside from their location dependent shenanigans. Like Vikavolt evolving from a Charjabug by using Thunderstone, or Eevee evolving into a Glaceon using Ice Stone. That makes sense bc you can get some of your fave Pokemon by just using stones, not just waiting for Mt. Lanakila for just a random Crabrawler to evolve literally near the frickin league.

Yeah, they must have known how bad it was since the Ultra games changed it to let you evolve at the base of the mountain, and get Vikavolt at the Power Plant instead of waiting for the last island you go to. But this change is even more welcome!

I'm pretty sure Crabrawler evolves at Mt. Lanakila because it wants to "be at the top", figuratively (as in, it wants to be the best) and literally (because Mt. Lanakila is the highest mountain in Alola), so it wouldn't make _that_ much sense for it to evolve with an Ice Stone. It's still stupid that you can't get Crabominable until so late. They should've given Crabrawler a middle evolution, or at least buffed it's defenses so that it can do somewhat OK with Eviolite.

I dont know if people share this but i would like that stones could be used on every pokémon in a way to get the final form earlier, the drawback would be the same, the pokémon wouldnt be able to learn any moves If eveolved trough stone So you would get i earlier for a good early game but you would need to plan for late game

I think they should offer an alternative to trade evolutions with something like a "Link Stone". That way you could have another way to get them and you could even make it more expensive to still encourage trading.

I mean, I think you´re forgetting the fact that the Deep Sea tooth and scale don´t actually just evolve clampearl, but also double it´s Sp. Atk and Sp.Def respectively. The scale isn´t all that useful, but with the Tooth, Clamperl has a Spatk that rivals DEOXYS-ATTACK. AND IT GETS SHELL SMASH TOO.

I just said no for the clampearl part. I agree with getting rid of the trade evo, but I don't like the idea of making the evo gendered exclusive. I already don't like that with gallame and Frosslass and also with some mono gender pokemon. My idea would be more of: Clamperl --ShinyStone> Gorebyss Clamperl --DuskStone> Huntail Or just make it so the item work as evolution item too and do not require the trade. And give more use to them such as making them work as held item not only on clamperl. (Tooth increass attackSpé and scale increass Defspe, but only of clamperl. Maybe make it so they both give a small boost to offensive or defensive stat to any pokemon that hold it instead? )

You could also use a Metal Coat for Meltan. Melmetal is, well, made of metal, and Meltan already eat metal objects, so it'd make sense to use a metal item to evolve a metal pokemon into a bigger metal pokemon.

In the Pokemon Black rom hack i made i got rid of all those trade evolutions and just made it so you need to "use" for example a Fighting Gem on Machoke or Psychic gem on Kadabra to make them evolve. Never was a fan oftrade evolutions or other obscure evolution methods.

I hate the gen 8 évolution méthode because they forces you to go on Google or buy a guide to evolve your pokémon and even then it's barely understandable. In previous generations, you could evolve your pokémon by accident or hear a rumour in the playground saying that you need to bring your glaceon near the frozen stone. I don't imagine any kid dicovering how to evolve milcery or explaining his friend all the different methods to optain alcremie.

In my fakemon region, I have only one item that is used to evolve a single pokemon. However, that's for game-balancing reasons. The Weathered Idol can evolve a certain ordinary breedable pokemon into a breedable legendary. By making it evolve through an item you can only obtain once, it prevents the player from evolving an army of legendary pokemon. So when you are done, you can breed the legendary to get as many of its pre-evolutions as you want, but you can't evolve any of them (unless you obtained a second one through a trade).

Apparently Clamperl's evolution items work like the Light Ball and Thick Club (with one of them increasing Special Attack and the other boosting Special Defense) and I think if they were fused and Clamperl just used a Dawn Stone it'd make sense to have a single item boost both since it's not that powerful of an evolutionary line

the tart apple and sweet apple aren't version exclusive. the sweet apple is only 1% in Sword and the Tart apple is only 1% in Shield because i have Sword and 9/10 times i get the tart apple but every week or so i'll get a sweet apple or two it's just really rare

I think some of the evolution methods you suggested seem pretty forced and would honestly be worse than what we already have. I feel like having Type:Null evolving from friendship is an important part of their lore, since it’s only free from its head binding when it finds a trainer it can truly trust. Having it just evolve with an Upgrade would just make it more much more Artificial and in-genuine

Metal Coat is also part of the "boost the power of moves of a certain type" held item class, specifically boosting Steel-type moves by 20%. Gen II introduced items of this sort for each type (except for Fairy, which didn't exist yet), but I think the Metal Coat was the only one to be involved in evolution. (And, no, Kingdra's Dragon Scale isn't the Dragon-boosting item. That's a different item called the Dragon Fang. It's a pain, I know.)

For the Slowpoke line, I would actually love it if they went back to the lore and used a permanent variant of how Calyrex switches forms so it actually combines with a Shellder. The distinction between Slowbro and Slowking could be dependent on one of a number of factors, be it the position within the party, the Slowpoke holding Kings's Rock or knowing a specific move or something else, maybe even a deliberate choice. Or maybe even trigger the option to evolve Slowbro when defeating a wild Shellder with it, with the same method to determine what it evolves into. In that case, it might also be cool to have a set of evolutions with Shellder as the dominant part and derived from Cloyster with the reverse trigger, defeating a wild Slowbro with Shellder, with a split depending on the Slowbro variant, at least if we don't get Shellder/Cloyster variants. Might be a nice way to finally get Ice-Poison Pokemon (and add a few more Ice-Psychic ones).

Honestly, I'd just give all of the trade items secondary uses like how the King's Rock and Metal Coat have them. Like, the Protector could be a counterpart to the Assault Vest, boosting the Defense stat if the Pokemon knows nothing but attacking moves. The Magmarizer could either boost the burn chance of any move that can cause burns or add a burn chance to any attacking move (with the Electirizer doing the same with paralysis). I mean, you're free to have your own opinion, but most of the ideas you listed are just making things more complicated. There's not much point in changing an evolution unless you're making it LESS complicated. Though, I do agree with you on the Sinistea thing. There's literally no point other than a gimmick. I mean, maybe if the Antique Form had a different Ability or something, that'd be one thing...

The issue with trade evolutions is more so the fact that, unless you talk to EVERY npc, it's something you are expected to just know, especially when it comes to Shellmet and Karrablast. Also, about the Slowpoke Shelldar connection, what about Pokemon Snap?

Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar: Level Up while holding a type-enhancing item (Twisted Spoon for Alakazam, Black Belt for Machamp, Soft Sand for Kanto Golem, Magnet for Alola Golem, Spell Tag for Gengar) King's Rock and Metal Coat Evolutions: Change the condition from trade while holding to Level Up while holding. Kingdra: Make the Dragon Scale work more like a Stone. Porygon: Level Up while holding the Upgrade and Dubious Disc. Huntail and Gorebyss: Make the Deep Sea parts work like Stones. Milotic: Level Up during the day while holding the Prism Scale. Rhyperior: Change the evolution into a move-based evolution (Rock Wrecker), and turn the Protector into a physical version of the Assault Vest. Electivire and Magmortar: Make the Electirizer and Magmarizer work like Stones. Dusknoir: Level Up at night while holding the Reaper Cloth. Gigalith and Conkeldurr: Make them into more conventional Level Up evolutions (as they should have been in the first place, let's be real) Escavalier and Accelgor: I'll keep them the same since their dynamic seems intrinsically tied to trading. Aromatisse: Make the Sachet work like a Stone. Slurpuff: Make the Whipped Dream work like a Stone. Trevenant: Level Up at night while holding a Spell Tag. Gourgeist: Level Up at night while holding a Charcoal.

I feel like it'd make sense for there to be a "Trade Charge", where every time you trade, you charge up the item. Once its fully charged, you can select a Pokemon that can evolve from a trade, and evolve it using the Trade Charge.

Put that idea in wonder trade, if that's still a thing. The traded pokemon evolve if applicable, and after 3-5 traded 'mons, you can choose one in your party to trade evolve without trading.

I think a cool compromise could maybe be getting "trade energy", where if you wonder trade a pokemon you get a point of trade energy. You may spend 10 to evolve a trade-evo pokemon through an NPC.

Just had a thought. What if the Magmarizer and Electrizer, when held by a pokemon, when they are hit by a contact move, will either burn or paralyze the opposing pokemon? Or if it affected the holder, when contact is made, burns/paralyzes the user? That there is some Switcheroo shenanigans.
