1. Isopropyl alcohol. Don't use other kinds of alcohol, they'll likely melt the plastics away. 2. Silicone grease lubricant. Be careful with other lubricants, as they again can damage plastic. Just take the mechanical housing of the stick out, dunk it in alcohol, let it dry, then put in silicone grease with the help of a toothpick or something like that, to get it into the mechanism. That's how I fixed my malfunctioning Wii U gamepad sticks.

@dkosmari - I'm guessing the silicone grease is serving the purpose of keeping the "dust" out also? or did you replace with the metal sticks? I clicked the Amazon link in the description but A) the result doesn't say it's for switch pro controllers (only PS and Xbox - not sure if that matters or if they're universal) and B) they're not currently available with no ETA. I was curious if, if you left the stock thumbsticks on, if more dust will just end up finding its way into the contacts, or if the silicone grease has kept your sticks working well. Thanks for the comment!

@charliechuckleberry53075 жыл бұрын
@4:48 It's not white dust, It has been proven to be the black contact surface that scratches off from overuse. People and myself have taken the analog stick apart. There is a metal springy thing that moves over a black slate like surface thing. Since you often push forwards most of the time, you will notice most tons of scratches on the black slate from all directions, but significantly more in the forwards direction. Nintendo designed it to never scratch. Most of the time there is zero scratches, but once a single scratch starts, the surface gets rough and dusty (losing contact). Blowing/cleaning/lubricating removes the dust and makes it work again. Once the black slate is scratched, it has a rougher surface and becomes easily scratched again and dusty faster/easier. You can only clean or remove the dust so many times till you have to completely replace the analogy stick, because the black slate becomes destroyed beyond repair.

The white dust is from plastic wearing down over time. What happens is that the sticks are made from a softer plastic than the casing, and there's a hard edge where the stick touches the casing so the stick grinds down over time and the dust enters the internals. Luckily, the plastic dust doesn't cause any *permanent* damage unlike with the JoyCon (which use a smaller but more fragile electrical component since there's less room), but if enough builds up it may become necessary to take your controller apart to clean it. My worry with the metal sticks is, unless you get ones made of very smooth metal it may just reverse the problem - instead of the casing wearing down the stick, the stick will wear down the casing and cause the same issue with a much harder kind of dust. That could cause actual damage to your controller, so if you do decide to mod your Pro Controller with metal sticks you shouldn't cheap out on them.

0:32 :o It me Also as someone who tried metal sticks on my Splatoon 2 controller, I definitely do *not* recommend them. The white dust that a lot of players get is the stick grinding away from friction against the controller shell. Like Dude, I theorized that it was the plastic dust that caused the left stick issue, so I set out to find a solution. I'm currently on my 3rd Pro controller and have tried PS4 sticks, Wii U sticks (because this wasn't a problem on the Wii U), using scotch tape, and metal sticks to hopefully solve this issue. I don't know about Dude's controller (because it looks like it's custom and possibly made out of a different plastic than the default pro controllers) but when I tried the metal sticks out on my Splatoon 2 controller, after about a week of using them I realized that it just reversed the problem. Rather than the controller shell grinding away the stick, the metal sticks were grinding away the controller shell (which btw, is harder to replace, maybe even irreplaceable if you have the Splatoon 2 controller). You can take the risk if you want to, but again I don't recommend it. I do believe I've found a solution of sorts. What I've done is I bought a roll of low-friction tape and applied it to the stem of the sticks, where they contact the controller's shell. I've been using them like this for a few weeks now and they've been working super well, but I'm still testing how durable they are before I reach a conclusion.

I've had this issue with my Pro Controller. I feel like Nintendo used the wrong plastic for the Controller cover. Transparent plastic is known to be less durable than solid, which is why the control stick seems to grind away at it creating the white dust. Some people will say your too forceful with the stick, don't grind so much, but I don't think this is the case. What I did to fix this problem was to take the Controller apart (not easy) take the stick cap off and put a vacuum hose over the mechanism then put everything back together. Making sure the stick caps are the right way round (they have a centred position). My left stick now works perfectly just like brand new and has been for several months. Although I can see having to repeat this process again in the future.

To increase the effectiveness of the blowing method, use a straw. I watched a video where a guy blew into a bendy straw to get the hard to reach dust out of there, I tried it myself, and it worked. It also worked for several people in the comments section of that video.
@ssl35465 жыл бұрын
There are two basic issues you can have. One is "drift" where your controller thinks you are slightly pushing the controller in one direction. You can see this in a game like Mario Odyssey - where the game requires you not touch the stick to warp to a flag. If you can't easily warp to a flag this is your problem. It can be corrected by calibrating from the Switch menu. The other is physical crap in the control stick and this is because Nintendo used sticks that support the "push down on the stick" function. You should first try contact cleaner which you can buy at a hardware store or on Amazon. It's a spray bottle of liquid that squirts out (like WD-40, BUT DO NOT USE WD-40) and washes away whatever crap is in there. It is likely to work so try that before going further. You can also buy replacement sticks and de-solder and re-solder a new stick in the controller, there are instructions to do this online. It costs about $5 for the part. Buying a new controller altogether is not the cost-effective solution.

I've had a 3ds for 5 years and no controller problems, but I've had a switch for 3/4 of a year and it's already drifting on my sticks

I'm so glad you made this video, when this happened to my first pro controller last year, I couldn't find anything when trying to search for this problem and I was even blowing into the stick every now and then as a temporary fix. It was so frustrating and in the end I just bought another controller. I may have to buy some of that spray just in case it happens again!

As for the dust, I try not to let it accumulate, as soon as I see even a bit of it, I clean it off now

Holy shit thank you dude - I'd noticed some mild symptoms of the dreaded drift, but a couple of blows as prescribed COMPLETELY fixed it. You just saved me £60!

Fantastic video! I bought a Pro Controller around the time this video was made and experienced this exact issue 2 weeks later. It's been collecting dust until now. I blew into it and suddenly it's working fine! Sadly, I think your right about "dust" being the culprit and it seems the analog stick's material creates it's own "dust". I'll have to check out these metal do-hickeys because I honestly can't be shelling out another $60 for what seems to be defective controllers.

Pushed the left stick forward and blew into the openings, it made a difference. Tried electric cleaning spray also, and it worked better. Gonna try to open it up and clean it properly. Thanks for the tips!

Bleak Expert you want to be careful blowing on the stick it could corrode the circuits instead use compressed air

I watched this video all the way through and as I was testing out all the methods, There was nothing wrong with it but even after I did all of these steps, my controller still didn't wanna work properly. I play a lot of 3d games like Splatoon, Fall Guys, and Fortnite on my switch. I have no idea what the problem is with my controller but maybe I will figure out what is wrong with it. This video was helpful but it didn't help my controller. Anyway your videos are amazing. Keep it up!!

Had this very problem. Used compressed air. Nothing. Watched the video. Went to the hardware store today and bought a can of CRC QD Electronic Cleaner, came home and took the controller apart, shielded the corner with the left stick from the rest of the controller with a folded paper towel, sprayed carefully, reassembled, and it's perfect. Pretty cool.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! especially that you recommended blowing at the controllers first. I am one of those luckier people who got it fixed just by blowing to it.hooyay
