Nice to see you back Izzy. Cracking repair job in lieu of that shite brickwork. Enjoy the rest of your holibobs mate, you deserve it. Looking forward to seeing the next video. Sorry to hear Drews parted company. Chin up mate on the work front, if your good (which you are) you wont have to advertise but starting out is difficult and you feel compelled to take anything to get work, don't compromise and stick to what you know, is the advice I'd give. Cheers mate

There must be a LARGE air space gap in-between the face of the insulation and the OUTER wall inside the cavity ; this includes an air space gap in-between the face of the insulation and the cavity-wall-tie drip point(which is in the centre of the cavity). Ask N.V.Q. City & Guilds BRICKWORK teachers for PROOF of this !

Tasty work, so your saying when old timber windows are replaced with New uPVC, the old 🪟 frame was a structural element ( lentil)? for the period house, hopefully you covered your 3 cutting discs on that job ( not cheap)
@man1cs1717 ай бұрын
Yep its very common here in the UK. Window companies just rip the old windows out and chuck new ones in. Then people wonder why cracks appear and all of sudden the new windows are difficult to open.

Yes that's correct! Old windows have the support in. New windows that replace old ones don't unfortunately

I really needed to see more of that wall repair. Inside wall being sollid, so what about the newer replaced outter bricks morter.... Did you butter the back of the brick to lay against the old solid wall. Or did you butter corners only then back to back the bricks to backfill the massive gap.
@man1cs1717 ай бұрын
No he would have a left a gap aka a cavity. If you look closely at the start of the video you can see cavity ties sticking out of the blockwork. These will go in the bed joints of the outside brickwork tying both skins together. The brickwork was also toothed in making it look better and giving it its structural integrity back.
@jasonputtock44287 ай бұрын
so my next question would be. If no tie back, then would I have to butter bother sides and back of the brick to bond them together.? I am new to all of this.@@man1cs171
@man1cs1717 ай бұрын
@@jasonputtock4428 No it doesn't work like that. To tie the two skins together you need to put headers in the wall. So imagine a brick length ways across both the skins. If you google flemish bond brickwork and English bond brickowork you will see what I mean. These are solid walls with no cavity. This is how we built in England before we used a cavity. The cavity creates a void and the only way to tie the two skins together and make it strong is by using ties otherwise the walls could potentially spread apart. Hope this helps.
@jasonputtock44287 ай бұрын
ok now imagine this. 3 Brick thick. Solid wall no flemish bond. Over 100 year old wall. 1 Corse length ways, 2nd corse short, 3rd corse length. The outter skin does NOT tie to the inner skin wall. The germans really bucthered this freaking wall. As per your statement, yes the walls are falling apart. The roof has now seperated and walls are about to explode out into the street. The roof rafters are over 2 meteres apart and the old beams are about 10x10 thick.@@man1cs171 I cannot afford to dismantle the house at all. In todays economy this is not even partcial. As long as I know that the walls have to be tied and not buttered as I asked before. Then I hope to be golden.

There’s nothing to fix just to brick up what hasn’t been done, but I certainly wouldn’t replace what has been done already considering the house is a 70s/80s effort that probably will come down in 30 years or so. It’s a waste of time.

Quick one for you izzy. Whats the min length a concrete lintel should be. I had lintels 400mm longer than my window openings so 200mm overhang either side. But i decided to step back my inside reveals 50mm each side so i can return a 63mm insulation slab on them so now on the inside block leaf iv only 150mm overhang either side.
@IzzytheBricky6 ай бұрын
Hiya mate, 150mm overhang on either side is perfectly correct and right 😊
@jericho96536 ай бұрын
@@IzzytheBricky cheers man. By the way what over hang so you put on. In places iv seen my block layer hasnt the luntela centered correct so in a few places he has one aide at 200 mm and another side at 100mm over hang but i presume that happens alot in places and its fine. I have concfloor upstairs so there is alot of weight on the house

Hi, always watch ur vids. Always great work. I have a quick question. How wd u gauge an old brick to a new extension using a different size brick..? Do u have a video of it.
@IzzytheBricky6 ай бұрын
Hiya mate great question. If the old house has 85m gauge you usually just buy NEW imperial bricks to match it. If that doesn't work for some reason, and you have NEW metric bricks, which are 65mm (75mm with bed) you won't be able to blend it in. Put a starter pack up and just lay ignoring the existing gauge. You can always hide this joint and where the extension meets the old house usually with a down pipe or water run off from the new roof
