Never would have thought you could use shellac on a poly finish for scratches. You learn something new every day.

Only dewaxed shellac.

Hey maybe this video would be good if you shared the products used. Thanks.

A two pound cut of dewaxed shellac, mineral oil, and some cotton strips and you're well on your way to learning French polishing

It would be great if he had a book on refinishing procedures or at bare minimum a list of products used.

Bob Flexner has had a book out for years and I'll find my copy and see what the heck the name is. Hold on while I rummage around. Got a pencil? It's called "Understanding Wood Finishing". Seems logical. It has great photos and explanations. Amazon has it. It's famous.

I French polished the koa / mahogany Tele in ID my pic in 2012. It's my shop guitar. I used boiled linseed oil which is an excellent moisture barrier. It's truly stunning.

does this work on a poly finish? or is that guitar’s finish poly as well?
@stratocactus Жыл бұрын
He said it's a poly finish. Shellac (dewaxed) goes on every cured finish (maybe not wax). It can also be used as a sealer coat under nitro or poly. Pretty amazing tool to have in the shop.

Why make a video and not share what you are using? To everyone that is begging this guy for info the technique he is using is called French Polishing. He did NOT invent it it's been around since bible days. I don't know what oil he's using but a bunch of guys use olive oil. I hear raw linseed oil with the shellac works much better but haven't tried it yet. Hope this helps .

I won't say too much now, but I wouldn't think the sort of oil is important. Important though is that you remove the oil using a cloth very lightly wetted by alcohol in the end. This in a whole sequence. On the other hand, if it's a poly substrate that one should give a solid base, but generally oil softens shellac - well, this is a whole science of course...
