The biggest restriction is in the spool valve in the steering box. By far. If you can port the spool valve you will be able to get factory-like steering speed back even with the 1.75 ram. It is tricky as it requires separating the torsion rod from the valve, and cleaning the burrs after may be tedious. The spools are hard and will more then likely require carbide tooling in a milling machine. I believe this to be the major difference in PSC steering boxes and trail gear "high flow" boxes and what not. The pre-runner community has this figured out, might be a good place to start. Also, a dual ended ram with a hydro assist set up wont have that laggyness when changing steering direction. Food for thought. I think you'll be suprised to see how small the ports in the spool actually are.

The PSC boxes are cast for hydro assist. The ports are way bigger then a stock box for sure. I was surprised how much bigger when I swapped to a PSC box. I ran a drilled and tapped box for a while on my crawler.

@@bradywilliams2666 They also have the ram being fed directly from the spool valve, eliminating the restriction of the passages through the box.

Just from the numbers -6 to -8 is a 78% increase in hose diameter So relates to easier flow. Then the steering ram 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 is 73% so significant smaller volume required to fill tube of steering ram. Square the diameters and take the ratio to get the numbers you want to analyze. I used hydraulic lift on back of Jeep but, it was slow. Using a die grinder to open the port on the ram head significantly increased the cycle time. In my case it was eliminating flow restriction that made the difference. Enjoyed watching the process. Thanks.

Pressure and volume are not necessarily directly proportional. You could add volume at reduced pressure. The speed, or rather, the ratio may be a factor of the restrictions in the ram or a mechanical limit of the pitman arm arc length.

Another thing you can try is a smaller pulley on the PS pump so it spins faster.

I had a similar issue where not knowing what I was doing someone talked me into a 2 inch ram and it was terrible. It actually wouldn't steer when I tried to turn quickly to avoid another car. Anyways, I switched down to a 1.5 and boom, problem solved. I put my vehicles together with the thought in my mind, can/will my wife drive this thing? 👍👍.

Definitely some cool tricks and ways around just spending the cash to get a PSC pump and reservoir and all. But honestly on a build like this where there’s been no expenses spared, why not just spend the cash and get the PSC setup? I know I would lol

Austin, if you notice the steering is better/worse once fluid warms up - try a different fluid.
