I’m about to complete on an Italian property and following your journey is really inspirational and made me feel braver about tackling the inevitable jobs that will come up, myself. Considering I’m a middle aged woman who can’t even put up a shelf (at the moment) that’s saying something - what I get from your channel is it’s just about getting stuck in to make the dream a reality. I’ve even enrolled on a basic plumbing course...eek! Love your vids - Thanks and keep them coming 😆

Don't let being a woman stop you from doing anything! For too long women sat back to others' dreams. Decide what you want and start doing. The next thing you know you'll have learned all about it, or decided to let someone do it for you. But YOU decide! Because of what is important and of value to YOU. Now go get em sister! 😉

Hi KT I am 53 year old woman and have just come in from doing the plaster work on our barn conversion (now 10pm on a Friday night) that we are doing up to rent out as a holiday house. I work full time as a teacher and then come home to do that at the moment. I am not as good as a professional and I swear I sometimes have more plaster on me than on the walls and roof. However, I am getting better each time and even though I am slow it will all come good in the end. We are doing a vlog as well that you might enjoy. However we are in Tasmania, Australia. My advice to anyone is buy yourself some good quality tools as I know over the years, we found that life is easier if you have the right tools and the cheaper ones always break half way through a job. All the best. PS - Raff is great I really enjoy watching what he is up to.

Hi KT, congratulations on you Italian property! Being middle aged or a woman are no reasons to not be able to do things! What I find works really well, is reading the instructions. Most of the stuff you can buy at the diy store these days is really designed to be easy to use. Good luck!

The wood used to hold up a line were thinner that what I would think is needed for the weight of those tile. But, I guess that is how it works over there. The floor needs a little cleaning and maybe a few sheets of plywood with plastic on top will stop any future drips. Would be a nice storage area. You are much more handy than first let on. Good work and stay safe.

Hi Raff, You have done a better job than the roofers who did this pretty botched up " new" roof. I think the main problem is that the rafters are much too small, some of them have been laid with the deepest section horizontal when they should be vertical to Cary more load and others, the square ones,are certainly well undersized. Also the rafters are too far apart. It might be worth slipping in an extra one between them all which would stop the sagging. You could improve the support by packing each rafters where it passes over the original hefty purlins to give them a bit more support. These tiles, although interlocking, don't fit together very well and I think you will get water coming in if there are strong winds blowing up the roof while it rains. As others have suggested the only way to deal with this would be to lay a breathable membrane under the tiles but this is a big job as you would have to strip all the tiles off to do it, although you could do this in sections ( the membrane needs to run along the length of the roof with each strip overlapping the one below so start at the bottom ). Hopefully the repairs should keep you dry as even with all its problems most of the roof does seem to be waterproof. in bocca al lupo! Mike
@NotUselessYet
@NotUselessYet 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, well new is relative, as far as I can find out, it was done around the time I was born, 40 odd years ago... They all seem to be done the same way here in Tuscany, but when I change the roof, probably in 5-10 years, I will use a larger section for the battens, and insert a membrane. I'm just waiting for the next rain to see how well it holds up! Thanks for the advice, I will definitely look this up again before I redo the roof!
@katabrontes
@katabrontes 4 жыл бұрын
@@NotUselessYet Hi Raff. Of course if you put in a membrane you won't be able to replace the tiles from below. Short term I would go for sheets of board (?OSB) over membrane in the loft. If you put the pot over the boards it will be slippery. We had our roof done in France 10 years ago. Including rather expensive multifoil insulation ( which I am rather doubtful about) it cost eur25K! Yours is trickier due to its shape.

You REALLY need thicker support beams. Those tiles won't hold long in this situation. Storms get really spooky in the mountains of Italy. I would also recommend something from isolation underneath the roof tiles for in the winter time.
@NotUselessYet
@NotUselessYet 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, it does look a bit flimsy at first glance, but all mechanical tiled roofs are built this way and hold up for decades if not centuries at a time. The roof was last redone about 40ish years ago, and only really needs some maintenance for now. I am not sure, but we probably won't be using the room so it's easier to insulate the floor, no need to heat more than necessary! Thanks for watching!

Hi there - I am a new sub. and I am looking forward to your videos as what you are doing now is what I plan to do in the next few years on property I already own in Italy which is is much worse condition !! I would not walk on that roof until you strengthen it !!!! You need to take all of the tiles off and make sure the truss elements are no more that 400mm to centre - also the tile battens are bowed and knotty which suggests they are not structural - it's a long way down so take care !!!

No insulation from the heat and cold? What about your comfort inside of the house? What about your heating bills during the winter months?

Amazing you can see daylight? Totally different from a US roof. We typically have beams with wood for running perpendicular. Then sheets of plywood covering the whole roof. Next a layer of tar paper. Finally a shingle- tar, slate, cement tile, terracotta or cedar shake. Some times metal sheet instead of a tile. Weird that a roof would not have a plywood/tar paper roof and be water tight.

Hello Raphael. Good job. I'm sure you're glad you're not dealing with carpet-made roof shingles as in other countries:-)) Instead you have clay roof tiles, which are sturdy and easily replaced. Right? My tip is: seriously consider a waterproof membrane under those tiles, it's a day's job but worth it. It will stop any minor leaks and shield the attic from humidity. Next tip is lay a new floor (half an inch of concrete) over the attic floor. There are rubberized-elastic-outdoor paints in the market that you could also apply over the concrete. Both would create an even pavement and shield the ceiling beams from humidity from above (which could rotten the wood).
@NotUselessYet
@NotUselessYet 4 жыл бұрын
Hi GS, thanks for the tips. I will think about the membrane under the tiles if I redo the roof, but it's very important that the house can breathe, so it would have to be well vented. The cement floor is an interesting idea, I will look into how much that would weigh. Thanks for watching!

I can’t believe you know how to do all that, roofs, plumbing, drywall, plaster, flooring....I guess you’ve learned from experience. Nice job, but what a mess up there in that attic, my house was a total mess too from roofers, I cleaned out the insulation and put rolled in, so much easier. Thank you and you deserve some beers!

Hi Amber and Nena, I am learning as I go along along. The attic wasn't too bad, I was half expecting it to be full of furniture like everywhere else! I will probably insulate the floor as you you suggest. Thanks for watching!

Very interesting that roof, is just like my grandfathers house. There are older wood beams, and newly (perhaps decades ago) pinewood with tiles. The roof looks good in general, and whenever you decide to rebuild it in the future, you may as well raise it a bit and add another couple rooms and a toilet at the upper floor!

Yup, based on the amount of moss and lichen I'd give the "new" tiles something like 30 years.

So interesting how your roof is constructed, with the tiles just sitting on the batons and no roof sheathing at all. It reminds me of my family's cabin that had wood shingles nailed to rafters and no sheathing. (It leaked pretty bad, but the shingles were very old). I think the first thing my dad did was put a new plywood deck on top of the rafters, and then tar paper, and then asphalt shingles on top. Not that you would want to go that route!
@jmbpinto73

Is standard procedure. Over here, old houses have this very same method of construction, very easy to put up and to replace single tiles, as Raff just did. :)
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 4 жыл бұрын
A modern roof designed for insulation would have rafters - sheathing - felt - counter-battens (running parallel to the rafters, creating an air gap from the eaves to the ridge) - battens - tiles. A new roof on a house like this would likely be very close in construction to the old one, except for some kind of underlay between the rafters and the battens to keep snow and blowing rain out. I suspect the main reason why roofs in the US are always sheathed is that asphalt shingles won't hold up otherwise. They're considered inferior in Europe, good enough for sheds and follies (gazebos) but no more than that. A roof is expected to last 50 years or more here! My parents had the roof on their house replaced a few years ago. The old one was from the early 70s and would've lasted quite a bit longer if the tiles hadn't been seconds, at least that's our guess.

Nah.... I doubt you were screaming. Maybe growling a bit?. But the roof looks great. You are so good at fixing things easily that seem like really big jobs. It amazes me that the tiles just sit up there. Not fastened or anything? Not even glued? We have a place in Florida and a tile roof and its attached to the under roof with adhesive and screws. But then again I guess we have more hurricanes than you. BTW, I am sending this as a second comment rather than replying to yours. Hope you get it. Xo

Hi Blueberry, they interlock and have those little feet to hang them on the battens. The roofs here all have similar pitch, and that combined with the weight of the tiles keeps them pretty much where they are! Thankfully no hurricanes here! Thanks!

(Moira Ashton) Another interesting vlog, What a view from the roof, beautiful, So glad you got the roof sorted out, that piece of wood with the knot in it was quite scary... I hope your car fits in that little tunnel, but wondering if you will be able to get out of the car. 😅

Thank you for showing us your tasks as they are needed. It gives a great insight into the problems you have to be prepared to tackle if you were to take on a similar project. As they say, better the devil you know! At least judgements can be made on whether you are really up for it or need to take courses before you decide to tackle such projects.
