Thank you so much for doing these videos. I bought a 50+ years old Yamaha upright about four years ago, and I HAD to learn how to tune it myself because there are no piano technicians in my city, it's already odd to find pianos here, so I really appreciate these videos. I'm very interested in learning so I can become a piano technician myself, and it's very encouraging to find quality content about it like yours ✨

I’m a piano technician and yes this is one of many ways to fix this problem. Other ways are increasing key dip and adjusting your letoff sooner.
@Pianist203
@Pianist203 Жыл бұрын
I usually first check if there's slack in key pilots. If pilots are fine, then I check key dip which should generally be 10mm. I wouldn't change blow distance, except if doing more complete action regulation process.

Love the sound of uprights. My Acrosonic seems to have a much richer sound than most of the grands I've played.
@Jimmy-rd5ig
@Jimmy-rd5ig Ай бұрын
I can 100% assure it does not. While Acrosonics ( the older spinets, and the new consoles that they are branding as Acrosonics) are decent pianos, they will absolutely not have a richer sound than most grands. That's a fact. It's impossible.
@Serperior-Deoxys
@Serperior-Deoxys Ай бұрын
@Jimmy-rd5ig I guess it's preference, cuz every grand I've played sounded almost hollow. My 1967Acrosonic fills the house with a rich sound. First piano I ever practiced on was a grand, I came home to our Acrosonic and immediately fell in love. The damper pedal was more effective, sustain held for longer, and it held its tuning across 4 moves and 30+ years. Only 2 years ago did it start falling gradually out of tune, not enough for most ears to catch, but enough to notice if you have a good ear. I like how far a grand carries its sound, but it has never felt like a full sounding piano. I've played on plenty of grands and uprights and I'll always stick to our Acrosonic. And yes, I've played on concert grands and baby grands, my opinion is the same, they're designed to carry their sound, not fill a room with it.

I could learn to play a piano at any age. I am 68. But my instrument only requires 6 or 12 strings to tune up. A little more manageable. But there will always be a need for piano tuners. I know it would help understand music theory better.

Mine had cloth straps with leather sewn on the end on each hammer that pulled it back when it struck the strings to keep it from double tapping. They connected to a hook but were glued into the hammer. It was formerly a player piano that was converted to a regular piano. I had stripped it of the black paint someone had done a poor job of painting it with and refinished it with orange shellac ten years earlier. Moths had started eating the felts and the straps were breaking so I gave it to someone that was going to gut it and put plants in it.

What is the oldest piano you’ve ever worked on? Where are you located? My moms piano really needs tuning. It has not been tuned for over 44 years, probably longer! It is at least 200 years old. Is there a way to find out the age inside the piano? I would be very interested to see when it was made, and tuned. I’ve never seen one like it! If there is a way to see how old it is, can you please get back to me?

@Mild Satire Every piano has a different tone Steinways are usually brighter and Yamahas or mason and Hamlin are darker. You can always make any piano sound brighter or lighter but some are designed to have that feel and effect. Not necessarily a bad thing to adjust but I would recommend getting a brand of piano which suits you the most :)

Hi i have a question, my upright piano is already like 5-7 years old and the hammer works properly, but the problem is you cant hit a key softly, like how in normal pianos you can do pianissimo and press the key lightly, but on my piano i cant press it lightly, its kinda hard, so everytime i want to play a soft passage i have to press the soft pedal on the left so i can press it lightly eventhough its still not enough. Which means everytime i use the right pedal its going to be bangy and loud, and if i want to be soft i have to add that "softer and careful" touch to the keys which is so so annoying, and doing perfect trills is just nearly impossible, i thought its my technique but its actually the keys that are a bit hard, because then when i trill on the high notes like around the 2nd highest C on the piano, it just trills perfectly and the higher keys are light Do you think it can be fixed? Or it cant be fixed anymore because its the matter that its old? The notes are still in tuned thoudh and the high notes are still good for now I just cant play freely with this condition, i have to play medium-LOUD even on softer pieces everytime but the keys are not stuck because i used a piano heater, please answer thank you so much
