Thank you so much for doing these videos. I bought a 50+ years old Yamaha upright about four years ago, and I HAD to learn how to tune it myself because there are no piano technicians in my city, it's already odd to find pianos here, so I really appreciate these videos. I'm very interested in learning so I can become a piano technician myself, and it's very encouraging to find quality content about it like yours ✨

I usually first check if there's slack in key pilots. If pilots are fine, then I check key dip which should generally be 10mm. I wouldn't change blow distance, except if doing more complete action regulation process.

What is the oldest piano you’ve ever worked on? Where are you located? My moms piano really needs tuning. It has not been tuned for over 44 years, probably longer! It is at least 200 years old. Is there a way to find out the age inside the piano? I would be very interested to see when it was made, and tuned. I’ve never seen one like it! If there is a way to see how old it is, can you please get back to me?

Mine had cloth straps with leather sewn on the end on each hammer that pulled it back when it struck the strings to keep it from double tapping. They connected to a hook but were glued into the hammer. It was formerly a player piano that was converted to a regular piano. I had stripped it of the black paint someone had done a poor job of painting it with and refinished it with orange shellac ten years earlier. Moths had started eating the felts and the straps were breaking so I gave it to someone that was going to gut it and put plants in it.

Forgive me if I’m wrong as I’m still learning but isn’t the blow distance on uprights supposed to be 1 3/4”? As in, shouldn’t a ruler be used in this process?
@PianoDoctor
@PianoDoctor Жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, different brands/makes of pianos have different blow distance regulations. 1 3/4” is fairly standard. To learn more, I would suggest reading Arthur Reblitz book on tuning and repair. (If you haven’t already.) I follow his method in this video and many others. In general, there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes than what you see in these videos (like using a ruler to measure blow distance.) I have to cut large parts of the video because they can get too long, detailed, and not appealing to the general public. I’m always willing to learn as I don’t have many years of experience. Please follow along and critique wherever possible! Thanks :)
@gofastER
@gofastER Жыл бұрын
@@PianoDoctor ah ok that makes total sense that you have to cut a lot in the videos to make it into a short! Seeing as how I have very little experience, I’m trying to get a feel for what is absolutely necessary and what is just the way we do things where I work. Of course my bosses would argue the way they have me do things is absolutely necessary! You just never know. My old flight instructor used to make me calculate weight and balance the the 6th decimal place. He said it was necessary. Most pilots would agree that’s just a little neurotic though.

@Mild Satire Every piano has a different tone Steinways are usually brighter and Yamahas or mason and Hamlin are darker. You can always make any piano sound brighter or lighter but some are designed to have that feel and effect.
