You can multiply clutch capacity by parallelling them. Some helicopters do this. Output shaft with multiple clutches. Counter shaft with identical sprockets and chains. Slightly different engagement speeds can be an issue, but in this application I don't think it would be a problem.

Play with the sprocket ratios as that gearing is way too high as that motor should be able to spin the wheels on a standing start on the grass and bypass the governor for some top end and that mower will surprise you. Loved both vids.
@damoknows15432 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I thought, make the gearing shorter and surely it'd rip
@theskidfactory2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean? Because the engine has tonnes of torque we should gear it so the engine revs higher? That makes no sense to me.
@Enz3d2 жыл бұрын
@@theskidfactory its geared too high, the clutch isint getting to an actual engagement point where its not slipping from being so high geared. that engine will spin tyres on grass no problem if you gear it down.
@h0g2s2 жыл бұрын
@@theskidfactory yes, even though it has the torque, by making the gearing shorter you will lighten the load on the clutch and fully engage it. At around 8:31 you can hear the revs fall even though you are still accelerating thats when the clutch fully engaged. Just give it one more shot with a much shorter ratio it´s an awesome mower! Similar to what some are suggesting already, I'd look into adjusting pulley / sprocket sizes if you plan to stick with a centrifugal clutch. Doesn't look like shrinking the sprocket on the clutch side is very feasible, so I'd personally be looking at possibly putting a bigger sprocket on the output shaft of the motor to trade away some torque (which you have plenty of) in exchange for some more rpms. Love this little thing either way! 10/10 would own!

Wine and toast Possibly the most entertaining theory dates back to the 16th century from the Roman practice. One of the first written accounts of it was in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor when the character of Falstaff demands “Go fetch me a quart of sack; put a toast in’t.” To translate, he’s asking for a great deal of wine with a piece of (literal) toast in it, which was a common practice at the time due to the poor quality of wine. Thus, placing a piece of toast within a jug was supposed to soak up some of the acidity and improve the flavor.

Not sure if its been answered but anyway. Castor and Akerman in a go kart is (overlay simplified) what allows the rear axle to act like an LSD. What you want to achieve is the inside front wheel jacking so that the the rear inside wheel unloads as you apply more steering input. This removes load from the inside rear and prevents the massive push understeer your dealing with. Woody send me a message if you want some angles and dangles to cut and shut if you want to F-around with it more later :)

Interesting story, but I acquired an '85 riding mower from the neighborhood 86 year old hot rodder who was selling it for parts, as it has a very very rare (for good reason as it turns out) actual pressure plate clutch on it that hasn't been made for at least 20 years. I took it upon myself to engineer a new full carbon clutch disc which took a few iterations to build one strong enough to handle what I thought was a fairly trivial amount of power. After doing a few weeks of looking for suitable rear end replacements from ATVs to mini trucks, I had no idea 'til later on that the mower transmission is converting that trivial 11hp engine into 250ft lbs of torque to push around a 600lb mower and needed quite a lot of strength! The one that finally worked was 9" in diameter, has a silicon carbide top face for friction material and mounts to a flanged v-belt pulley to utilize the original transaxle, which after a successful engagement and a mow, the transaxle now needs a rebuild! The clutch came out a little _too strong_ . How often is that a problem?! 😁

That new clutch was bang on but the ratio of your drive needs sorted. smaller sprocket on the engine or larger on the rear. The gearing seems to be set up incorrectly. Most of these centrifugal systems like anywhere from 5:1 to 5.5:1. Good luck!

Need to increase the gear ratio. Although the motor has plenty of torque and will easily drive the mower with the current gearing, the weakest link is the centrifugal clutch. To reduce the amount of torque required by the engine (and therefore clutch) the gear ratio should be increased. Either reducing the front sprocket or increasing the rear sprocket will do this. Without doing the calculations unfortunately you will have to keep burning clutches till you get it spot on. I’d be happy to do a few calcs for the gear ratio if you need. Love the videos as always! PS. Your merch is quality👌🏻

I reckon it's a case of the type of clutch you've used are to suit a higher revving go-cart type motor, as opposed to the V-twimnKohler you are using that is much lower revving. At lower revs there is less centrifugal force to engage the clutch, hence slipping and burning. I suggest getting an industrial centrifugal clutch to suit the revs and torque you are working the Kohler at, max rpm is probs about 3500, torque about 75 Nm.

@ericnelson69822 жыл бұрын
Maybe if you adjust/remove the governor and change the gearing. It may improve things. higher rpm should help the clutch and also lower gearing would help it not lug the engine so much. Thee other thing is maybe another type of clutch would work better, like one where the friction material and the weights are the same material. Nice work on the build, looks like a lot of fun.

Absolutely loving these vids! The old Cox looks and sounds awesome. Just a thought on the clutch issue. Maybe you could run the clutch on a jack shaft. That way, you could gear it so that the clutch is actually spinning faster than the engine, and engages quicker so you don't smoke it so quick. Whatever you do, I really hope you can make it work with that old mower motor. Keep up the great content guys!

Change the gear ratio, put a bigger sprocket on the gear box or axle. Those engines should rev up to about to 5,000 rpm before valve float and the limitation of stock camshaft. Caster can be used to raise the inside rear tire on a turn if the chassis is stiffened properly. There is a lot of information available to build a race mower on the cheap and it to work pretty decently.
