I remember our old 85 bayliner..Same problem..Mechanic told me on so many occasions he simply cleaned up these motors put them back togather. That was the case with our Trim Tilt Motor.. Now have a 8 HP Yamaha High Thrust motor for my kicker for my Glas Ply boat. We checked everything and indeed it's the motor. Thank you! .

Fantastic! I had a 1987 90 HP Mercury that had the exact same intermittent problem. There was not a replacement unit available due to its age. I had to remove teh motor and took it to a Buddy that rebuilt starters and alternators. He cleaned it up like you did and put new brushes in. It worked great after that. I learned so much from watching this video about how to actually check out the motor myself! Thank you!

Excellent video and don't be sorry for showing us the motor internals so well! It's actually good to see some electric motors are still serviceable and can be opened easily. Marine life can be hard to brushes and commutators because there is humidity all the time and temperature is changing also. Humidity can make the powder that brushes leave stickier for sure and jam it easily. Thanks for all the advice.

Thanks for video, I had Tohatsu M40D tilt not working. Only manage to take out the lower bolt, the upper bolt is STUCK. But did manage to take out everything in pump, valves and clean. It works now not sure if it was air or debries in the system that stopped it from working. Found a good way to take are out, open bypass valve, take off the lower bolt so unit can be usped up and down by hand, remove motor. With motor away you can push it up and down and easily top up oil, there is surprisingly much oil needed if it has been drained, and surprisingly much air. I found that it was when rod was nearly fully retracted the air came out so moving it up and down there was a quick way to get air out.

Here is a added note. When you shut off a generator, or a rototiller, gas power washer, plus any engine pertaining to engines that will sit for long periods of time, try this if you want the valve spring to last much longer which helps with horsepower, pull the pull starter until you feel resistance remember intake, compression, power and exhaust. When you go into the compression stroke this is when both intake and exhaust valves will be closed. Hens forth relaxed spring that will last longer. Oh and thanks Dangar Marine.

You have some very good videos. Your experience really shows. How do you fix a manual release valve that is stuck? Mine is stuck. I've used big screw drivers to try and turn it. Used a hammer to help free it. Used different types of oil to help free it. It seems to be very stuck.
@DangarMarine8 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is quite comment because it is so close to the waterline and tricky to fix. Heat is usually your friend here, and an impact screwdriver can also be gold. Use a gas torch to heat the body of the unit around the screw and then hit it with the impact screwdriver. Be careful of any plastic parts and the boat itself if it isn't removed.
