Isn't it weird that the shuttle Tyderium was virtually identical to a standard Lambda-class shuttle, despite being "disguised as a cargo ship"?
Well, let's explore some possibilities!

I always assumed that something like the Lambda-class wouldn't be used for BULK cargo the same way as the Zeta-class shuttles in Rogue One or other larger freighter-type vessels. If you pull out all those seats in the passenger compartment you're left with an interior space that would put most U-Haul trucks to shame. For small shipments of specialized cargo, a Lambda-class shuttle works just fine as it is. When asked what the cargo of the Tyderium is, Han tells the Imperials, "Parts and technical crew." Which would make perfect sense - a small cargo of technical components (for example some type of sophisticated computers) along with a specialized crew trained in their installation, maintenance, or use would easily fit in, and warrant, a craft like a Lambda whose use connotes some type of VIP transportation. With all the specialized machinery present in the shield generator complex on Endor, such shipments were probably pretty common. I do also wonder whether the external cargo module depicted here might interfere with the landing gear or make the ground clearance too narrow.
@ECHenry
@ECHenry 8 ай бұрын
Very sensible explanations, for sure. The Tyderium as-is can definitely be justified with simple lore, but I still wanted to try the cargo pod. It doesn’t interfere with the landing gear, but it does have very narrow ground clearance.

I don't recall for sure how much is actually explained of the shuttle Tyderium's original function, but according to the book, "Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure," in which Leia's secret distraction mission of "Yellow Moon" is depicted, it is during this mission that the shuttle Tyderium is acquired. I do remember that Leia, along with Nien Nunb and a communications technical specialist escape imprisonment from an ISD utilizing the Tyderium. Perhaps there is information there that can help with this analysis/understanding of the shuttle. edit: Just wanted to be clear that the shuttle was already on the ISD; the rebels' own ship was destroyed during their captivity, so they commandeered the Tyderium as the ISD was being attacked and destroyed by a faction of rebel ships externally.

It would make perfect sense for high-priority shipments where speed is more important than cost. As an added bonus, you could keep collapsible passenger seating in the interior and operate as a "Combi". Carrying both passengers and cargo. Stow the seating when you need the cargo area and bring it out when there's no cargo to haul, but passengers to carry.

I think the original Tydirium is gray not because of an intentional paint job, but because it's less cared for and cleaned than the Emperor's or Vader's shuttle. The creators of star wars wanted an "old new" feeling to the universe, although it wouldn't apply to the shuttes of the two most powerful people in the Empire.

I still think there are a lot of unexplored possible options for the TIE Bomber platform. We have executive shuttles, boarding craft, many different weapons packages and pod multiples BUT... If a TIE Bomber didn't have passengers, assault troops, huge ordnance load-outs, that'd leave a whole half of the craft [or space where half the craft was] for whatever you fancy, as long as it fits size-wise. You could have refueling craft, short-haulers / cranes with a clamping system where the 2nd pod should be - that transported supply containers / sections of ships / space-stations under construction [for location drop off OR precision placement / assembly using thrusters] . You could have ultra-long range recon / survey craft with a hyperdrive and extra telemetry. Recovery / Repair craft with an airlock or remote operated manipulators / equipment for close-up engineering tasks. The TIE Bomber could be your best friend, basically. Like a faithful dog. :)

I'm not sure if it was intentional. But with the 360 view of the Lambda, from certain angles it has the dark gray of the Rogue one cargo shuttle with white tips. That looks cool as hell. Secondly, You can also have several standardized cargo sizes if you want to go with the clone wars era cargo shuttle. Maybe those Lambda Cargo variants are for higher up imperials transporting their valuables, and something like the standard cargo shuttle is beneath them, excusing the smallest size of the cargo container.

When asked, Han said he was delivering "parts and technical group", things that would not have necessarily needed a larger cargo ship. It could have been a special or rush delivery to repair a critical item on the moon with a few specialized technicians that did not require a larger or specialized pod-modified shuttle. The part could have been as large as a crate or small as a briefcase and "overnighted" from Coruscant. Routine logistics stuff, even in the Galactic Empire. That being said, the idea of the cargo pod is brilliant. Makes the Lambda shuttle more routine and utilitarian as well as a high-ranking personnel transport.

I picture the cargo pod as being as tall as the cargo section of the Lambda class shuttle, itself. The shuttle would hover over it before descending, enveloping the entire pod with just the orange part you've shown sticking out of the bottom. In this case, the whole cargo space of the empty shuttle would just be a socket for the enlarged pod to fit into. Like, perhaps the cockpit is even cut off from the rest of the ship when a cargo pod is docked. I feel like that fits in with Imperial style secrecy and security, forcibly seperating flight crew from cargo. Just my two cents to help give you more than those 90 cubic meters lol

Keeping with the theme of the Republic/Imperial/First Order shuttles being named after letters of the Greek Alphabet, I have one that I created for just some fun, it's called: The Iota Class. Designed just before the beginning of the Clone Wars, the primary role of the Iota Class was that of a large deep space research/spying vessel for the Republic. (Basically a Lambda-Class enlarged to the size of an Eta-Class supply barge, two top fins taken from the Rho-Class transport shuttle, and with the wings found on the Zeta-Class.) With a smattering of radar & sonar equipment, signal receivers/jammers, and a military grade scanner cloaking system. With the transition into the Empire, the Telgorn Corporation would decide to continue to use the Iota-Class, but for use against Rebel activity across the Outer Rim. While the role of the Iota-Class was replaced IGV-55 surveillance vessel, built by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, the idea of a specialized ship for spying & intelligence gathering would continue to be part of every military across the Galaxy.

I see a couple explanations why the Tyderium can look like the personnel shuttles used by various imperial leaders. first, given the Zeta class and Sentinel class shuttles are cannon and operating at that time, it could be the Lambda class could operate as a light lifter shuttle on an as needed basis. say you only needed to move a small amount of cargo consisting of repair parts or light equipment, having a light, medium, and heavy lifter craft makes sense. Second it is likely that all 3 classes were modular in design. While Lambda's were more likely to be kitted out for VIP transport compared to the others, having a craft that could be quickly shifted between missions to better fit different parameters makes sense. it could likely share some of the interchangeable equipment with the larger Sentinel class to assist in moving troops and supplies. Third, at the time only the Lambda existed IRL so it would have to fill most cargo, troop, and vip roles. fourth, they didnt want to make a new model specifically for this when they already had workable models for other imperial shuttles.

So, bit of 1970s behind the sceneries for you. The original reason the shuttle has that flat space that so perfectly fits a hangar bay, is so they could mount it for various shots! This actually even manifested on the toy versions released in toy stores, I wish I had some examples of the early lines. We were almost one step removed from having a Shuttle chase, but it didn't fit the plot, so they really only need a bar to mount the model on, as well as being able to literally fly by wire, with the wings.

The behind the scenes explanation for the shuttles looking similar is that they were only able to use two models for all shuttles in the film because of the complex internal structure necessary to animate the wings. I think this works perfectly for the in-movie explanation for their business on Endor: "What is your cargo and destination?" "Parts and technical crew. Forest moon." If it was a major construction operation there certainly would have been more and bigger ships, but if for example it were just a small team of specialized engineers there for a certain task, especially if it were maybe like private contractors brought in to consult or something, then using the Tiderium (a Lambda class just like Vader or Palpatine use) makes perfect sense, because it would be a more comfortable ride for a group of specialists plus their gear. And adding the little cargo pod on the bottom also makes it seem more like a general cargo ship but still a shuttle.

Great vid EC Henry, I really like the idea of a cargo pod for the Lambda class. Now I have a reason to get a second Imperial shuttle from Jazwares' Micro Galaxy Squadron.

It is probalby a common misunderstanding that the disguise is visual. They are using an imperial code of a cargo ship to disguise the ship's real identity, and the Lambda class can perform cargo ship duties too, transporting mainly personel. Simple and logical explanation. Done.

In Legends the Lambda-Class was a pretty decent weapons platform. in the old X-Wing Games they were quite annoying to take out especially in a mission in X-Wing Alliance where you had to disable the Shuttle Tyderium so the Rebels could capture it. It had 3 double blaster cannons (one rear mounted) and two double laser cannons so it could put up a fight along with it's duel shield generators. The military version had 10(!) blaster cannons on it. It was well armored too and could deflect a lot of laser fire. It was ideal for covert missions as it could travel without much of an escort if any. As far as cargo goes it could carry 80 metric tons and had 10 cargo holds/bays so I'm not sure if adding a cargo container to the bottom of it would serve much of a purpose. So using the shuttle tyderium as is by "transporting parts to the service" made sense as it could carry quite a bit. It was also easily configurable and the favorite ship of many bounty hunters most famous of which was Jodo Kast who used a modified Lambda as his personal hunting ship, The Fox Catch. He had the wings cut short and mounted 4 X-Wing engines to it.

The X-wing games usually had the double guns in the back disabled for Lambdas, only the Escort Shuttles with the three wingtip mounted guns get the rear cannons. And those are turbolasers in the tail.

Some basic life support and seats installed in the cargo pod would also allow for more than a couple fire teams to land on Endor's forest moon, possibly a full platoon with additional equipment beyond just what everyone can carry on their backs.

Cool idea and visualization. I have an idea for a shuttle/light transport (ST Runabout hull, 4x Y-Wing engines, YT cockpit, dorsal Y-Wing ion cannons, 4x Y-Wing laser cannons forward), call it the Caracara.

I always wondered why the Tyderium has a name. In a galactic fleet, wouldn't there be about 80 billion shuttles? Each one gets a unique name? I think it would more likely be called shuttle XT375G22.

It's super light freight. It's overnight shipping on very specific and time sensitive materials. That's your explanation for why such a small ship would be a cargo vessel. And especially when you consider the secretive nature of the Death Star II, maybe there's something for the shield emitter on the moon that needs to be moved in quickly and covertly. No big vessels needed, even these pilots could be on more restricted access than a standard cargo shuttle pilot. It's not totally unbelievable Lambda-class Shuttles could be used for such operations.

I was rewatching star wars rebels and it seems like in season 4 "in the name of the rebellion part 2" theres actually a lambda class shuttle that has an integrated additional compartment on the bottom of the ship allowing for more cargo and passenger space which was a cool little detail to find

I love the idea of the cargo pods being modular, and attaching to different types of shuttles. Large issue I have with this, though, is that the Tyderium is the perfect cover for a small commando team. A cargo shuttle would have to be hauling or receiving something that could be scanned. Han's story to the Executor is that it was parts and personnel for the forest moon, which easily explains why they used a simple shuttle. I get the feeling that if the Alliance used a cargo pod they'd probably be far more suspicious of it, especially given that Rogue One was a cargo shuttle, also moving a commando team

seeing this, hearing your thoughts on it, reminds me of one scene in Star Wars Rebels, Ezra and Zeb steal an Imperial Shuttle for the umpteenth time, and the question of how they were able to always steal it so easily came up, only to be countered with the other prompting the question, "Wait, isn't this the same shuttle from last time?" Implying that whatever flight crew was in charge of it was SO terrible at their jobs, it kept getting stolen, only to be returned to them after whichever Imperial Ship or Base it was left at, found out which unit it belonged to.

I'd also reckon there are so many shuttles flying around just to handle the basic day to day logistics of a galaxy-spanning empire, that one or four going missing every week isn't even unusual, like work trucks/vans in a major city.

I love this idea, however I'd have loved to see it with the magnetised cargo crates we see a lot of in rebels. I loved seeing the sentinel shuttle Hondo stole with all the crates and barrels attached to the exterior. More of a personnel carrier with their belongings and supplies kinda vibe

I really like your design my headcannon was just that all Lamda's can act as cargo ships in a pinch and the Tyderium's "disguise" was changing how it' "space IFF" signature appears, similar to the Ghost in Rebels although instead of pretending to be a completely different starship, they just changed it's mission type and relevant details

I love the way you plug the gaps and lore in these videos. If you're looking for another obscure ship to work on try the Mando-Verpine colab Bes'uliik assault fighter that came out of the Legacy of the Force novels. There's only a few images of it and none of them seem to be based on the actual description of the ship.

I’d always assumed that one of the reasons they were suspicious of the Tyderium in the film was that they were saying it was a cargo shuttle but wasn’t a class of shuttle usually used for carrying cargo. But the imperial urge to go “well the paperwork is in order so I guess…” worked in their favour
@Crosshair84

It's probably simpler than that. We know that the DS2 construction is behind schedule. On large projects like this, things are never equally behind schedule. Some things are on time or even early while other things are months behind. So when a shipment that is 4 months late finally shows up, it could have an older clearance code that will take some time for security to dig back and verify. Officer 1: "This code is dated 4 months ago, is this legitimate?" Officer 2: "Pull up the cargo manifest and check it against what was supposed to be here around that time." *5-minutes of searching shipment requests.* Officer 1: "Oh yea, here it is. Sure enough. They've been waiting planet side for these guys for 4 months. About time they showed up." Officer 2: "Great. So the older code checks out. We're good to let them through the shield."

@@Crosshair84 true, and they also listed what they were carrying as “parts and technical crew” which makes it seem more like they were carrying small, but important replacement parts, and a few engineers. Probably not enough to justify a big cargo shuttle. Just a late courier shipment with some personnel who got stuck in limbo for a few months due to administrative delays

When the Rebels said they were "parts and technical group" it made sense to me that it was made to look like a random shuttle tasked with transporting a specialist team to the moon. Not much of a reason to doubt they weren't exactly what they said they were.

If the Lambda-class is like a present day cargo aircraft, the seats would be removable. Could explain why we didn't see a cargo pod in RotJ? Keep that Star Wars Lore coming, always like seeing your videos.

I do like the idea that Lambdas could have an optional cargo pod, it's a good intermediary step between cramming personal items into baggage overheads on the small end and huge heavy lifters like the Zetas at the other end. It would also reduce the demand for more classes of dedicated "light" cargo ships by allowing an extant hull to do that work.
