Fixing Thermo King APU unit red triangle shut off issue

You are right. Finding a trust worthy mechanic is near impossible. I went to Thermo King, they said I needed a new fan. Without thinking I said sure. They charged me $326.00 for a new fan. Same fan/ model number on Amazon....$99.00. my total bill was $1,800.00 and the unit still wasn't working correctly. If you're an Owner Operator and still working I wish you the very best of luck! Looks like it's going to be another tough year 2023. Owner Operators......we need to help one another! Do your best to lend a helping hand to other Owner Ops. We are all brothers (plus some Sister's) trying to make it. Everytime we turn around, someone is putting their hand into our pockets. Be safe!

Don't buy a new alternator guys , just go to Alternator and starter electric repair shop , cleaned , change $20 bearing, $15 brush and you good to go .

In combination of what this gentleman did, I had these problems for the last 6 years. Check your APU fuse box under the bunk. If the green light in the APU fuse box is fast blinking like 2-3 blinks per second it’s a fuse problem. If the fuse is abt 1 second blinking fuses are ok. Also, change your blue filter abt every 6 months. Keep stuff away 6inches from that blue filter. Also open the inside of where that blue is and make sure no bolts/screws are lose.

For everyone watching this, DO NOT BUY AFTERMARKET alternators, aftermarket alternators will not be recognized by the apu and it will overcharge the system and the alternator will get extremely hot, don't waste your money and get urself the OEM alternator, it's expensive but it will work, labor wise it's very easy and it only took me 45min

Funny. Bcoz all the apu shops I been to sell aftermarket parts that you can buy at auto parts stores . So if one got hot then either it was a bad alternator or wrong amps or bad wiring

Thanks, bro)) Turned the ignition, checked the guage on the battery charge, on my truck, and figured that there is no charge. Did not though that alternator might cause this... well, it might, but I did find out from this video. Cheers. ✌

I know this is a older video but I just want to throw this tip out there. Check ur battery's, there is also a wire that has a eyelet buttconnector that goes to the starter. Lil black wire and has a inline fuse. If u come up on top and pull the wire it may pull right out. U can add a longer wire and eyelet down to the alternator on the power stud that will fix a red triangle issue and or voltage issue. Also I see alot of ppl on forums talking about swapping there 65 Amp alt to a 120 thinking they will get more power. This will NOT work. It will only throw a code and shut the apu off. U have to put the right alt on there. If ur not sure look at the pulley size om the alt. I'm not sure what is what but it's on the web. U can also look at the fan on the back of ur cab. If it has a sensor ziptied by the air dryer. It's a temp sensor or looks like one if it has that sensor then it's a 120 Amp alt

It's always good idea to replace all 4 batteries together. Putting only 2 new batteries will make those batteries carry most of the loads and thus work harder than the 2 old ones. In the end the new batteries won't last long and you end up spending more money. There's only 3 battery manufacturers in the US so pretty much they just slap their company brand name(Napa, DieHard, etc) to it and claim it's better than the other. Little that most know it came from the same manufacturer.

Well purchased some Alied battery and replace then myself jaja and it's been a few years now and they have been working fine ever since. So they worked for me and I would go straight up to then when I need some more. Some batteries are so expensive.

These units are very prone to corrosion on the electrical connections. Thanks again! I noticed your voltage was 11.7 or something like that, it should be 12.8 to 14.2 vdc.or so. Maybe your batteries were dead?

I have a similar issue except its not throwing out any error codes. In your case was the alternator engaging at all? I can see my belt moving but the clutch thing never rotates. The fan at the top of the tractor only comes on for a few seconds and then immediately the system shuts down. Does this seem like an alternator issue?

It may be that the malfunctioning alternator caused your batteries to fail. There is only one or two battery manufacturers and everybody just puts there own label on them.

I had the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark in the middle. I checked on the laptop only thing I saw was check oil pressure switch and I noticed the ambient air temp was 1875 degrees. Not sure what’s up

No i didn't have to add any freon. First you need to fix the electronic problem and then you can take the truck to any service so they can add the freon. in it's not that expensive maybe $100 or so

You mentioned the horrible batteries you bought from Freightliner… I don’t know if you are aware of this and we learned the hard way, you never run your Thermo king. And the truck at the same time. Always use one r the other, because it will destroy by your batteries and in some cases it caused the batteries to explode. Thanks for the trouble shooting advice. On your computer at the bottom it read, engine coolant temp too high. I just shut down and tried to start it and it died each time. I wonder if that has an effect on it. Laurel

You can't run APU and truck at the same time unless you modify the ECU bord on TK controller. About the battaries i have had bad experience on brand new alliance batteries didn't las 8 month. 2 of them failed before warranty and they gave me 2 new batteries, they failed again. I will never buy alliance battaries again.

It should be coming out of your trips fuse box if it’s not there you should have a spot where it connects to it’s micro usb cord

According to this thebooq.com/articles/tripac-apu-error-code-35. Maybe the switch is bad? Also, check the wires underneath. remove the cover and check the alternator wires as well as on top wiring whatever is visible.

@@nikalaexpress711 I'm not a expert on jumping wires, but my mechanic jumped them at motherboard, do not the switch. I made 2 bad decisions 1 taking my apu to mechanic 2 canceling my appointment at TK. I thought he found problem at my fuel pump.

Your battery problem is not because of the brand of battery you bought. There are only two manufacturers in the US making car and truck batteries, and they are the same good quality. Every battery brand you see is just one of those two with a brand label on it. The only exception would be odd products like gel cell batteries ore big capacitors pretending to be batteries,
