i swear the most effective thing for baby trans people is not searching for "trans-specific" fashion advice. searching for "women's outfits for broad shoulders" is gonna give way more useful advice (not to mention how it really emphasises the reality that even pre-hrt trans women have broadly the same things as some cis women)
@hardyorange6 ай бұрын
THIS. I see SO MANY trans women INSISTING that every trans fashion influencer start a clothing line so that they'll "finally" have clothing that fits their trans body, when the reality is 1) there are plenty of cis women with your exact proportions and 2) most women are fed up with trying to find clothing that fits them and makes them feel confident and fashionable. You aren't having trouble figuring out your size in women's jeans because you're trans, you're having trouble because women's clothing sizes aren't standardized and finding a well-fitting pair of women's jeans is so life changing that someone wrote a whole YA novel series about it! (Okay, not quite what the series was about; it's "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" series if you don't know what I'm referencing!) Genuinely, humans are relatively low on the hormone-based dimorphism scale; we might not be as uniformly shaped as house cats, but it's not like we're as different as angler fish, either! Pick a style influencer who has a similar build (and skin tone and hair texture for makeup and hair care!) as you and start by following their advice, regardless of them being cis or trans, and you'll probably find brands and styles that suit you far more quickly than begging the handful of trans girl influencers (who have completely different proportions than you!) for advice.
@morbidhime6 ай бұрын
Yeah I'm a cis girl but my body type isn't the stereotypical dainty/small type, yet I'm not chubby either. This video is a big help for choosing what pieces would work best on my body type ngl
@Nejove6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm not sure why exactly, but it feels like a lot of women's clothing is made for proportions that even a lot of cis women don't possess in terms of a narrow torso and thin arms. I'm told that my cis sister has that same problem, so some cis women ALSO just have wider shoulders and/or ribcages, thicker arms, etc. than women's clothing tends to account for. I'm not sure if this is just misogyny ingrained in the fashion industry (much like fake pockets or lack thereof) or related to the fact that a lot of clothing tends to be made in China where people's bodies are smaller on average or what, but it doesn't ONLY affect trans women.
@hardyorange6 ай бұрын
@Nejove Smaller sizes mean less fabric, plus plenty of places are using the same pattern for all sizes and scaling it up and down to make smaller and larger clothes, but human bodies don't work like that: a person who is 30% taller won't have a 30% wider ribcage, and same for going down in size. Even worse, the way fabric is cut is often using giant "cookie cutter" stamp cutters or guillotine blades on a stack of fabric at the same time, which, especially for stretchy fabrics, causes the stack to warp as pressure is applied, making every single piece in the same cut sliiightly off from the original cut pattern, getting worse the farther down the stack you go. Add in that cheap labor means worse stitching and thus using up more fabric in uneven hems, and all around it's a recipe for disaster for actually making clothes that fit.

Personally, I feel like you should've mentioned leggings (or nylons, I guess, if you prefer that) as an option at some point. Yes, they can definitely have "bulge" issues, but wearing them underneath a dress, skirt, or even shorts can be a great way to show off the SHAPE of your legs without showing off the TEXTURE of your legs (especially if they're not as smooth, unblemished, and hairless as you'd like). It can also make the outfit warmer in colder weather, and it pairs well with the kinds of ankle socks that you recommend (well, leggings do, but not nylons). Overall, they're just a versatile (and usually pretty cheap) clothing option worth considering, and not JUST as gym wear.

As trans people it’s easier to see the problem since usually it’s over the top for each style we try until we get to really understand what fits us
@kyttynkross11214 ай бұрын
another tip is to tuck your shirt into the skirt (or pants). Some of the issues you brought up about the various tops making the torso area weird may have been alleviated by tucking the shirt in. Especially that black one; could almost look like a seamless outfit/dress, depending on the skirt's waistband style. Or put on a big chunky belt to highlight the waist area (put it in a different place, even, to "reshape" your body) that being said, it depends on the shirt stretch and the skirt weight. If the shirt pulls up when you reach up adn the skirt is light weight enough (as this one seems to be), it'll just ride the shirt right up and oopsie daisies. but also, honestly, your best best is to check out women's fashion tips, rather than trans fashion tips. you'll find great advice just generally.

Grey and more toned down colours (like less bright/saturated colours or darker colours like dark green or burgendy) or neutral colours are such a good idea for socks that easily make it look less of a twitch egirl/kawaii weeb type outfit and more like a feminine everyday outfit! You can even still use those colours to create nods to fun aesthetics such as neutrals and dark green could lean into looks that reference cottagecore colour schemes or dark grey, or dark red etc could be used for looks that reference dark academia colour schemes, if you still want to be able to use clothes you have for everyday essential wearable looks out, to also do fun aesthitics. Also higher denier tights to help create more feminine looking legs or trying knee/mid calf/crew socks for those with already skinny/feminine shaped legs is great for more every day wearable looks out, even for more formal/professional settings. Crew socks are great to create more looks that can be worn in more everyday settings too, especially if you still want to keep your socks colourful or with fun patterns on them :)

Part of why I finally gave in and went outwardly femme was my love of funky colorful paisley prints. Like going to a site to shop for yoga pants, there's literally hundreds of options for women, and only one in basic black for men! Basically I dress what I think suits me, and don't worry about it. This time of year I wear a lot of fishnet/crochet/openwork on my legs, as that suits both my shorts/skirts and shoes. My flats work with ankle socks, but for heels that works for only specific shoe and outfit combinations. I wish that I could find more cute ankle socks my size in silk, but they are rare. Currently I am wearing a printed silk romper which is like a baseball shorts cut on the bottom, with bell sleeved halter top. It's a mostly red pattern with paisley details in orange, yellow, coral, and teal. Some distinctive minimal red geometric fishnet tights I wear only a few times per year, and chunky Brazilian heels in cutout brown leather. It's simple, IMO looks great, and keeps me cool on this sunny 80 degree day.

If you want to keep the baby tee or even just pair something nice with a tank top and the skirt, you can also go for a nice baggy cardigan that covers the shoulders or is off the shoulder on one or two of your shoulders. I think that will concentrate bulk to the clothes and make your features look more petite. Of course this doesn't work on hotter days or in hotter climates but you might be able to find thinner cardigans that still work. Oh, you can also wear tights, leggings, or fishnets if you want something on your legs but don't want to wear thigh highs.

And it doesn’t feel like it’s a “baby trans” style at all, it feels like I’m escaping that phase really pretty quickly and that’s probably thanks to you Ashley so thank you!!!! (It’s a cute, nerdy girl type look for anyone curious)

My trick is tucking in the button up in the skirt, but letting it puff out a little on the sides/front. If the skirt is high enough on your waist, it’ll give a nice curvier shape if thats what you’re looking for, while also looking a little more professional.
@cocoabear_art6 ай бұрын
Or another would be to get an oversized zip up hoodie and have it only halfway zipped up so that it drapes off one shoulder. It does a good job of hiding belly if you’re insecure about that (i definitely am) but it also pulls the sweater up so it looks kinda cropped to enhance curves :)

can confirm, baby socks do so much more for me than high socks when trying to dress feminine!
@bloodsmithgamer50715 ай бұрын
Funnily enough- I mostly wear ankle-length skirts. I only have two knee-length "skirts" which are both actually quite masculine kilts lol. And I started out wearing neutral blacks, grays & whites for long socks bc I have always kind of preferred neutral colors. I'm still trying to find my way past that a bit tbh so I can wear more interesting outfits..

Honestly, all my 'outfits' are in that ball park. Hearing "There's nothing wrong with this outfit, it just could be better." reminds me of my time in school when I had to go to extra classes and when some other kid asked the teacher "Why do we have to do these classes?", I told him "Because we're stupid." and the teacher told us "It's not because you're stupid. We just think you could do better.". The teacher meant we were all stupid. Anyhoo, I'mma go question my fashion choices.

Pro-tip from a trans guy who obsessively learned to dress my feminine body thinking it'd "cure my confusion", and never saw my own body type on pinterest boards, outfits should be interesting in 2/3 categories; texture, shape, or color. The first bto was interesting by shape, a tighter top and looser/structured bottom helps an hourglass silhouette, accentuates the small of your waist with the cropped tee, every individual piece of that fit makes sense, but feels *off* because it's only hitting one of those 3 categories.

Another piece of sock-related advice, try Pantyhose (especially black). Super breezy, usable in winter and summer, keep the legs warm but also ventilated, and look great under any dress/skirt. Yes, it's seen as being for old people in many places, but in places like Romania (my home country), they're worn by basically everyone.

i agree the top clashed with the socks on the first outfit but to me the fix is Swap to a equally bright top like a hot pink then layer some neon coloured plastic chains to help match. Though yeah its definitely more going for ALT vs trying for a normal outfit

What's your advice for people that would prefer clothing that covers them up a bit better because they're anxious or their body might not be the best suited to showing skin? Like, I would've probably replaced the programmer socks with a pair of black leggings or pantyhose (or just sticking with the black kneehigh socks), because my legs looked awful since they're super hairy, and even with shaving that means having visible stubble and possibly nicks and cuts on them.
@sabrinanaves714817 күн бұрын
I'm a big fan of tight jeans or "jeggings", tights that have the jean coloring/texture. There's so many fun ways to accessorize them, and a cute top that goes down to your hips will hide "the bulge" if that's a thing that concerns you (I hate it personally so I love longer tops)
@BlackMarluxia17 күн бұрын
@sabrinanaves7148 while it does cover my hips area nicely, I feel like the combo of tightly fitting jeans/leggings with a more loose or long top makes me look way too top heavy. Like it turns my torso into a huge box while making my legs seem like some thin sticks poking out at the bottom. I generally like cargo pants with a more tightly fitting top to make my upper body seem smaller and trying to add bulk to my lower body. It's also fairly comfy and has pockets! :D

i gotta say i think the baby doll Is Genuinely the best look with the skater skirt, like yes to the long coat, but the bbdoll+skirt is a classic for a reason WAIT SHOULD HAVE FINISHED WATCHING FIRST cropped jumper + skirt is the peak 100 agree about the programmer socks though- it's a Specific! Look, and if it's what you want, go for it, there are plenty of ppl who love that kind of style, but if you want to more go for an artful/fashion/mature w/o being Old look, ditch them. also bbig fan of sheer button up/ button only part of the shirt w the skirt, low shoes, big coat

The thigh highs are a bit weird, but are you all really saying that any adult that wears a T-shirt and a skirt is acting #1 age inappropriate, & #2 like a baby trans stereotype? I mean I'm just gender fluid, but if im not in boy mode, then I wear an oversized shirt or a sweater and leggings. Boy mode is literally just a tshirt and jeans... Maybe icky is just really picky about fashion. Watched the rest of her video, and it seems like we're on the same page.
@e.s.r58094 ай бұрын
#1 There's no age limit on fashion, but there is kind of a point where "dressing young" will draw people's attention. And you know. Puberty is kind of a sensitive time. Sometimes you want some privacy for the struggle. #2 It's not a bad look, but it's a specific look. Cis adult women rarely wear that combination. We don't all have to look like The Cis though, they're not the arbiters of good taste. I have at least one friend who lives and works solely with queers, has no intention of integrating with cishet society, and dresses like that as a queer fashion choice.

It is all about experiencing what works for you, trans or not finding your own build of clothing that express yourself is the ultimate goal. Some clothing work like a charm but most are just for your build/body shape. My two cent is pay a visit to your local thrift store, go crazy and spend a whole day trying out all type of clothing. Take pictures whenever you find one you really like and looks great on you, that's how you slowly get used to which piece of clothing you should buy in the future. Doing so will greatly reduce the unnecessary spending, I do it is hard to resist those cute outfits; however, they are not for everyone and likely not for you as well. It only works until you are extremely familiar with your own style. Thrift shop is where it all starts imo
