@@SenseiSeth I understand not swinging it around during the spin but technically it's not linear because it's not attacking the center line. The end kick is a round house and it's meant to go around the center line. Kinda threw me off when you said it's all linear.

The principle is to increase the speed of the attacking limb, and that's the most efficient with a twist/spin. Then, after you have sped up the limb, you release it in a linear movement to minimize the traveled distance at maximized speed. The principle is the same for a proper jab or even a simple front kick, there are very few exceptions. A lead leg front kick and a headbutt maybe.

For me, it's the best spinning kick. The spinning actually helps with power, speed, and closing off distance.
@davidwilliams48375 жыл бұрын
Great video and instruction. My theory: the reason dropping the knee helps is because most have a tendency to "lean away". This removes mass and center from the kick [becomes more of a falling back motion rather than moving INTO the target]. Dropping the knee down helps keep the spine more upright so the hips can advance, open and pivot into the kick. As a Wing Chun practitioner, spine position, rotation and stance is incredibly important. One of the big thieves of power is not being upright [the second is not sinking into our stance]. We often do this without realizing it. It's intriguing to see your approach as I'm less versed in TKD or Karate style kicks. Also: when you state spinning attacks are linear, this is VERY true. Even spinning, we have lines of force and direction [usually easiest to see by knee point or elbow]. I definitely learned from this, and the difference in Mike's kicks after your instruction was impressive. Thank you.
@SenseiSeth5 жыл бұрын
Yea I think your theory is pretty reasonable! It’s a lot about the momentum of pulling the knee up too! Thanks for the consistent support bro!
@davidwilliams48375 жыл бұрын
@@SenseiSeth Anytime. Thanks for the great content. Wing Chun is very different, but it teaches the importance of "lines" of force and "center" [connected mass]. Weight [or mass] and "linear" force is applied by the knees or elbows. So, the direction of both determines the "line". Whereas, the wrist can rotate, redirect force [circular motion]. Shoulders are more sling than lever and are better "seated" for power, otherwise they disconnect the arm from the body. This is why when closing in your kick, the knee direction controls the "weight" and mass applied both in the horizontal and vertical plane. Hence, knee "up" [to reduce "weight" and shift] then knee "down" to bring the mass into the kick. Even knee forward allows the momentum to transfer toward the line [the spin happens within the "line" as you state]. In Kempo, you'll find these same "elbow" ideas utilized for breaks and strikes.

Icy Mike could definitely throw that to the head, it's for some reason easier to hit with high shots doing Tornado Kicks because there's a moment where both your feet are off the ground. Now your hips can swivel a bit back or forward depending on how high you wanna aim and how confident you are you can stick the landing. You'd think it would be move that's hard on the body, but it's surprisingly the mid/high kicks that are the easiest on my hips and hamstrings lol

I get that it is probably one of the more basic kicks that needs lots of work to get powerful/snappy and really needs great timing to be super effective but doesn't work is a bit extreme . Actually have you seen Michael J White's side kicks , I wouldn't like to receive a good one of those anytime soon .
