Nice video! Just completed a timing belt change on my 2006 outback with 108000 miles on the odometer. I changed all pulleys and water pump for good measure. The idler pulls were dry and tensioner was starting to leak. When installing the tensioner, remember to put blue treadlock on the first threads and torque to recommended spec (28 ft-lbs). Do not over torque!!!

dude this video is amazing Jim Crockett if people can't figure it out from what's being shown here they should just go pay this guy 1100 bucks to do it lol

Worked on plenty of cars, mostly sm block chevy. This video is straightforward and gave me a good idea of what is involved. I'm thinking of buying a 1999 Subaru outback to build into a light expedition type vehicle. The car I'm looking at has 210,000 miles on it so I'll probably just change the belt straight away since this is an interference engine. i wish newer engines still had a 3 link chain for timing like sm block chevys lol you never even have to think about those breaking.

Great walk through! I'm about to embark on the timing belt on our 01 Outback, and this has chased away several concerns I had before I even start. Thank you so much for sharing.

Misleadiing video. The timing marks on the belt should line up with the notches on the camshafts. Plus just replaced water pump on a 96 subaru 2.5. The bolt in the 3:00 position has to be tightened up first. If you examine the position of the bolts against the water pump casting you can see that the shoulder of the bolt comes into contact as you are tightening the bolt. If I had to do over, I would grind out the casing to allow for more room for the bolt. I resorted to using 2 small plastic wire ties to hold the gasket to the water pump as I inserted the water pump bolts. Once I had 2 bolts threaded, I cut the ties and pulled them out. Made the job way easier. Using a punch on one of the holes to align the water pump saves a lot of time.

Thank you for taking your time in making this video. I am about to give this ago. Did not think about the crank seal till you mentioned it.

also thank you poster all your videos are amazing I saw a later one down the road where you showed an easy way to break the crank bolt by using a belt pinch technique. saved my ass man your the s***

do u have a viedo of doing a 1990 legacy quad cam timing belt and the cam seals. and the main seal as well or is everything much the same, and great video to,

Perfect video - if you already know how to do the repair. (Kind of like that Jack Sparrow island that could only be found by people who already knew where it was.) Was hoping for a video that didn't assume I was already a mechanic.

Jim Crockett Sorry, yes not enough detail for everyone.

you did'nt mention you have to rotate the engine a few times to make sure the timing belt alignment stays correctly, sometimes they can slip if the tensoner is bad thus causing a whole lot of problems for the owner down the road.

Does that pulley come off or does it need a pully puller

my 1999 Subaru Legacy gt is making a knocking noice at about any rpms in 1st and 2500 rpms in 2nd and about 3000+ in 3rd but doesnt make anymore noise when in 4th and 5th gears, any ideas? been told its a rod, been told its the timinh belt tensioner, i dont know what to believe

Considering the year, I would highly suspect that it's piston slap. The horizontally opposed design of the engine is constantly pulling the weight of the pistons down creating wear on the lowest parts of the cylinder bores allowing for some loss of tolerances in the overall bores. This wiggle room can cause the sides of the pistons to tweak slightly against the expanded bore, especially when the piston is being forced back after firing.

dude you did okay i learnd a littl. but you left out the ditails on how to line up all the pullies and the timing belt. ty for making the vid but next time get into more ditails pls
@fixingcarsandstuff9 жыл бұрын
mario cosa Yes, sorry about that, if the belt has not broken or fallen off, you can turn the crankshaft over and line up the mark on the crankshaft to the mark on the engine, though the camshaft marks can be off 180 degrees. I often but the crankshaft pulley bolt back in, once I am ready to line up the marks and just turn the engine over using the crankshaft bolt until the marks are all lined up.

why are you skipping steps? if one good mechanic such as yourself is going demonstrate how to remove electrical fans,(something most DIY car people know) then why do you not demonstrate how to remove the hydraulic idler pulley, the crankshaft timing gear,etc?. i myself don't even remove the electrical fans or the upper coolant hose so i have a slim chance to contaminate the timing belt components with coolant or excessive dirt(i will admit i am glad you did remove these components for the sake of working space and making the video). i must say this is not the best video. it seems almost as if you started getting lazy towards the middle.
