Super Helpful on my repair, the cam moved with the belt off wasn't sure what to do next and how the marks should line up and your insight on the crank gear arrow mark saved my day! working on a 1997 ej22 2.2

Thank you good sir for the refresher. I've been told too many time how to do it but like a grad student thrown into his first job I just don't know enough not to ask questions to be sure that I'm doing it properly with such little experience with this particular job.

Hello. Great video. I had a mechanic replace timing kit on 1995 Impreza ej18, 165,000 miles. Then, 6 months, 2,000 miles later, i have 76psi compression in cylinders 2 and 4 (drivers side head). It starts fine and will drive but is a slug. No overheating or oil/coolant leaking. Good spark plugs/coil. Just half the compression it should have on that one head. Could bad timing cause both of those cylinders (2/4) not to have compression? How could I do a cursory check on the timing marks, in my driveway? Thanks!

hi sir. im on my pistons now for my ej18. about the ej18 piston rings and bearings are same with EJ20/EJ22??? im a DIYer and learning from ur videos and others. ty

The crank and rod bearings are the same on the 1.8 and 1990 to 98 2.2 but the piston rings are specific to the 1.8, the ej18 has 87.9 mm pistons VS the ej22 97 mm pistons so the 2.2 piston rings would be too big for the 1.8

So on mine.. that pulley you put on last.. the bolt just spins.. is it an m9 x1.25? For helicoil?

Hi. I have an ej18 in a 1995 Impreza that I paid to have timing kit done 6 months ago. I want to visually check it now to be sure I don't have bad valve timing because my #2 and #4 cylinders only have 75/78psi compression. I don't have any issues except weak power uphill and higher speeds. Is there a way for me to visually check the timing with removing the timing belt covers? Using spark plug holes and maybe a small camera too, at most? Thanks!

The 99 Subaru 2.2 IS INTERFERENCE.

The dead giveaway as far as I know is solid lifters, if it has solid lifters it IS interference.

subscribed. ej18 and ej22 NA do they have same gaskets? what parts do they differ? most online parts shows ej22. so if i purchase ej22 parts will it fit my ej18? thanks
@ImpreziveGarage2 жыл бұрын
The head gaskets on the 1.8 are different the cylinder bore is 87.9 mm vs 96.9 mm on the 2.2, but the other gaskets like intake manifold valve covers water pump are the same from 90 to 98 the 2.2 changed in 99 and has cylinder heads and an intake more like the single cam 2.5. Also note that in 96 the 2.2 went to a single port exhaust that is different from the duel port exhaust on the 1.8 and 90 to 95 2.2 so those exhaust gaskets don't interchange.

thanks this is helpful. by the way timiing kits of EJ18 and EJ22 are 100% same, right? thanks

Yes just make sure get a timing belt kit that is the right year for your car, in 98 they changed the belt tensioner but I think they stopped making the ej18 in 97 so that shouldn't be a problem, you can see more info on different tensioners in my vid here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJnbnaywasijr9E

Bought a kit for mine And the belt doesn't have timing marks? Did yours?
@ImpreziveGarage2 жыл бұрын
Yeah some of the belts don't have timing marks, but you should be fine if you make sure all the timing gears are at lined up correctly when you install the belt, also if you rotate the engine over twice after installing the belt and all the timing marks are still lined up at 12 o'clock then you have it installed right.

Hay man doing the same process over again I did this a year ago with cheap parts now I’m doing it over but I’m having an issue removing the crank bolt for the pulley …. In this situation would you use a ratchet or am I going to have to use a torque gun because I can’t seem to get it completely loose with the ratchet
@ImpreziveGarage Жыл бұрын
If you can get in the with a impact gun that should do it, other wise get a long breaker bar something over 2 feet and jam a pry bar into the teeth of the flywheel or into the flex plate though the access hole at the rear of the block to keep it from turning over, I've gotten it off that way many times and you can get to it with out having to remove the radiator.

I thought this was supposed to be done at TDC for #1 piston

Never knew the phase 1 EJ22 was a non-interference engine, for my phase 2 absolutely is 😂

I can't hear you over the music
@ramjet4025 Жыл бұрын
If you have people sleeping be warned, this video has numerous explosions of music that are entirely unncessary. This is the 2nd time I ended up back on thsi video and the music is a distraction from trying to follow the narrative. The most annoying , F&()&ing annoying part of Raccoon Wrenching is the number of sudden explosions in music volume. Give up on the music , and please, get someone who can hold a camera steady. This explanation leaves a lot out and has some poor practices.

The music is a real distraction. This is a great tutorial but get rid of that music, we need to hear what you are saying. Thanks
