I've used radius cutters on interrupted cuts for many years,they certainly seem to cope much better,and last much longer than a cnmg or similar.

Also great for cutting away welds. You never know when or if you hit a pocket (which is more often then we like to admit ;) )

Yes they do work very well with interrupted cuts. I used to use them on cylinder heads with a fly cutter and as we know those things are full of holes.

i suppose they gain from not having corners as weak spots. it cuts wider and doesnt focus all the friction on one tiny spot

Simple physics, the greater the cutting radius, the more durable the edge.

Round inserts work great on smaller diameters where you have higher rpm. On big part, slower speed it's difficult to break the chip.

if you did your job right your cutting speed should be the same. That is offcourse you can clamp your big parts wel enough to spin them at the right rpm. On small diameters its actually harder to get the right surface speed because moste lathes cant run fast enough for it.

no insert relief to break chip, interrupted cuts break them naturally . Mitsubishi, kennametal, worked many years back.. even ceramic than we notched on diamond wheel to break hot blue chips.. 32 feet is shop record on one continuous turn at 4200 rpm and feed for a .072" thick chip on 18" dia 6061 . whew!!

Truthfully an iPhone on slow mo would work, too. 240fps would be more than enough. 1000 would be standing still.

A round insert is the strongest because of the radius. The larger the radius the more it can handle the interruptions. It also pulls a little more power depending on the depth of engagement!

Thats stainless and that is some serious freaking load on the spindle you can hear it struggle to maintain speed yet the tool isnt chattering or getting smoked that’s impressive.

I always liked milling, machining, ect. Idk if I would be able to stand doing it with cnc or automation. Still cool, but I just noticed no one hand cranks. I guess it's probably not that much different (Also no I'm not a boomer, I'm 22)

Не понимаю зачем нужно было делать квадрат перед сферой. Квадрат можно было фрезеровать после точения сферы, тем более технологическая база для закрепления есть.

It's simple logic to be honest .the more acute a cutting angle the more unsupported a tool tip is . But then stress and friction are the compromised factors.

25 years as a machinist (retired, kinda) never really found a good use for any of them round inserts, mills or lathes, seems like they just created more work, over "square" inserts (not technically square but for cutting square corners)

Maybe a silly question, but do you recycle the scraps into something usable? I noticed the one shard that peeled off in one long, continuous, curly strip and it just got me thinking because it looked so unique & cool

This is just a machining demonstration.Inserts, tools, chips, working materials, etc. We recycle as much as possible.

What is the thickness millimeter o the cercular round?

The insert thickness is 4.76mm. It is economical with 6 corners and can cut up to 3mm.

when insert broke propably your toolholder go too. that not even sound bad as our interupted cuts. that are shame shape but edges different so every corner it vut is diff. dont mill square. plasma cut it and dont have any round end to hold it LOL

I don’t care in the slightest wether or not the machine knows where the chuck is or if the route is pre-programmed; my hair ALWAYS stands on end when I see the tool get that close to it

There's no big deal about interrupted cuts with any inserts. Decades ago these were things we avoided, because tools were poor compared to today.

I wonder how that works... doesnt a lathe cutting tool need a material stronger than the object being shaped?

As you say, you cannot cut the material unless it is harder than the work material.

we use cnmg center corners. that corner you never use anyway. box filled good sharp unuset edges. why need buy new tool xD
