I had a home made box/shroud previously with a hole in the bottom attached to my 1 hp dust collection system. It did not work. I have seen others add plastic curtains to increase the suction. I did not try this, so I'm not sure it would work. I have since bought and use the Rolland shroud. Even if there is plenty of suction, I need to shake the shroud from time to time to make it drop in the collection port. What it does really well is to contain the dust within the shroud. It has made a world of difference in my shop.

I kind of went the opposite approach and ONLY have a 4" dust chute on the bottom of my miter saw hood hooked to the Dust Collector. The whole thing is hobbled together but the fine dust that comes out of the back of the saw just hits the back of the hood and falls down into the 4" DC port/chute. However, this does require the miter saw to be very close to the large dust collector. Actually, picked up a cheap wall mount Powertec DC to dedicate to the miter saw. Since I had the 4" fittings this cost less than buying a heavy duty shop vac, hoses, auto-on/off, etc. I'd say if you have the space for a shop vac and DC combo, that setup is best. However, I'm happy with a 4" DC hood connection vs. shop vac direct connection if you only had one. Great video as usual.

@@carenclemmons5002 Physics. Single- or Two-Stage Dust Collectors (commonly using 4" or 6" duct work) have the advantage of sucking a higher volume of air than a shop vac. A dust hood surrounding a miter saw contains a significant amount of cubic space filled with dust, so using a dust collector that can move a greater air volume has an advantage over a shop vac.

FILTERS: Keep in mind, when it comes to shop vacs, and dust collection the “better” the filter, the more suction you lose. While it’s not always a HUGE difference (or loss), it’s something to be aware of…performance vs “health” (potential particles breathed in).

I apologize for being wordy. I am a KZbin fan of yours. I am writing this to several presenters. About 60 years ago, I took high school woodshop. Thereafter, I learned a few basic things from my grandfather and father. Over the following 20+ years, I had neither the money nor the space to do any woodworking. About 25 years ago, some tools were passed on to my by parents, so I took over my garage, but my skill was rudimentary; the things I created were crude and imprecise, but I enjoyed the process. About 5 years ago, I got very sick. During my recovery, I discovered you and your colleagues on KZbin. Since then, I have been a junky watching mostly woodworking videos. I must THANK YOU and your colleagues for teaching me so very much. I moved to a new home and created a shop on casters (I have to move cars) and have tried many of the things YOU have taught me-and bought way too many new tools!. I now spend as much time as possible in my shop and have actually created some pretty good project products and shop furniture. Without you to help me through my convalescence and your clearly understandable videos, I don’t think I would be enjoying this hobby as I do. Thank you and the whole KZbin woodworking community.

So what would you recommend for a printer and all that is needed? I have no idea. As I trust you , I am hoping you can give me some advice on buying one that I can do smaller things like this with . you couldn't have asked at a better time! Bambu Lab is the only printers I recommend now based on how easy they are to use and the quality of the prints. And they have a big 2 year anniversary sale going on. I would recommend the A1 bit.ly/FTBT3D-A1 $339 or the A1 Mini (smaller version of A1) bit.ly/FTBT3D-A1MINI $199 and then add some PLA filament from them as well. You'll be very happy with either of these!

Nice one, thanks as always. I'm with Joe Blow Below- I don't have a 3D printer, I haven't had the patience to teach myself any CAD/CAM software, so I just kind of heat stuff up and cram it together as best I can. PVC and ABS are cheap! Use good ventilation., and stuff something more or less heatproof inside of the tube so it doesn't collapse when you bend it. I've found #1 plastic - PETE - to be really helpful, as it shrinks when heated. Many, many types of bottles and jars from the supermarket, including many sizes of soda bottles, are made from this plastic. Cut the ends off, slip it around the two pieces you're trying to mate, and put the heat on it. It will shrink to fit both so you get a removable airtight seal. Finally, those boxes with a bunch of furnace air filters and a box fan blowing out the end are great for protecting your lungs.

Loved the video. I've been working on my own dust collection system and this video gave me some new ideas. Thanks! The fitting should always go from smaller to larger, when possible. This helps eliminate the lip that can collect dust and debris that can clog up the hose. I've seen people use PVC DWV to make custom fitting by heating them to the point where they can be stretched, bent, and manipulated to fit other sizes and needs.

Ridgid miter saws are terrible at dust collection. I have an sliding miter from them which shoots dust everywhere even with a big shop vac attached. It has been a disappointment for finer work as well. It is a rough cutting saw for frame work in my opinion. Now I do think that any miter saw will benefit from good dust collection, but some miter saws are way better at it out of the box.

It freaking amazes me how so-called "engineers" who design these shop vacuums DON'T make the dust collection ports fit the most common PVC plumbing sizes... I would consider this a no-brainer feature, but somehow the "engineers" must have skipped some basic principles of engineering, mainly to use common off the shelf components & sizing when designing stuff. HOME DEPOT: ARE YOU LISTENING? Example: I've been using Apple products since 1998, mainly laptops. They ALWAYS made the thick 120v cord on the power adapter replaceable, but the thin, lower voltage cord (the one most likely to wear out) non-replaceable. It wasn't until just a few years ago, the mid to late 2010's, that one of their "brilliant" engineers thought to make the thinner cord replaceable. SMH!

I have a 15 year old Makita 10" sliding compound miter saw (no, not dinosaur or Minotaur) that I've mounted on top of your mobile miter saw station that I built. I was given a Rousseau 5000 dust collection hood that I put on it. The back is connected to a 16 gallon Craftsman shop vac that is supposed to be 190 CFM. Totally not impressed. All kinds of fine particles escape from around the sides. I'm almost at the point where I won't use the damn miter saw in my shop - wheel it out to the driveway instead, or cut my wood on the table saw or band saw. It has become one of the least used power tools in my shop.

A little realization on air flow: exhaust manual recommends air flows for circular (radial, table, etc) saws in the range 350~500 cfm (cubic feet / min). And the biggest problem with a miter saw is the uncontainment of the particulates. No matter how much suction ... well, within reason ... you put on that little duct connection, a lot of material escapes around the sides, and top, and bottom. Circular saws, operating at very high tip speeds, generate a lot of particle velocity. A shroud application is about the best you can hope for. You made a wooden shroud (I used clear plastic). I put a 16x20 scoop in the bench surface behind the MS, and a 4" duct to my DC evacuates the shroud area. It's about 85% effective, but on small particles it should be about 99% (because small guys just go with the flow).

@@carenclemmons5002 The shroud is 2" higher than the MS, about 6" wider than the MS, and curved on the back (particles bounce down), and the scoop is the 16"x20" behind the MS. I framed the shroud from curved plywood and then used dowels for horizontal connectors to the sides, with the curved surface and the two sides made from clear plastic cloth. Footprint of the shroud is about 24" deep and 20" wide. Allows light on the surface. Sides are even with the MS fence so no interference with workpieces.

Use gravity! At my first shop, I had a dust hood installed under the platform where my miter saw sat. As all the dust flew to the back and bounced off the back wall, it fell with gravity and the dust collector sucked it into the chute. Couple that with a semi enclosed hood and you’ll be all set!

One thing, might improve things a tiny bit: where you use the 3D-printed angle, instead of going straight up, can you come to the side and/or down? Not that the dust has a LOT of choice, but a 60° turn followed by a 180° bend in the flex hose slows the air down a lot more than _not_ having that 180° turn. But then, if it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t fit.

Wait a second..... so you bought a hepa filter to collect small dust.... but to clean it, you use another vacuum.... which I assume doesn't have a hepa filter??? So your just throwing that fine dust into the air again??? Hmm.

Besides the stock dust port and shroud, some woodworkers have found that it pays to collect dust at or behind the miter saw fence. Some indicate that the best solution is to use a combination of stock dust port AND shroud, or stock dust port AND at-the-fence dust collection, etc. I’ve been wondering how well such combo systems work, and specifically, any trade offs that arise. Your thoughts or findings are always appreciated. Thanks.

@ELECTRICIANS have an idea on how to solve this?: “Auto switches” are very good and useful. HOWEVER, if you have multiple dedicated circuits/breakers in your shop, they don’t allow you to run your “dust collection” and “machine” on 2 different circuits. Most miter saws and good shop vacs average 15amps on start up, so it’s wise to separate them. Obviously, you can have your dust collection constantly running, but defeats the point of an auto switch. ANY IDEAS around this?

Another method of making fittings is to heat PVC pipe fittings that are slightly undersized. After it's soft enough when heated, force fit them to the fitting that needs to be fitted to, allow to cool and now new fitting is form fitted. An added benefit with PVC is the self lubricating characteristic that allows fittings to be easily readjusted or removed with less binding.
@Ted_James
@Ted_James Жыл бұрын
Just make sure that you do that outside with the wind blowing away from you. Heating PVC causes it to emit toxic fumes. You could also use heat shrink tubing.

uy be careful with that. your also creating a taper that will want to force the inner part outwards. especially in pvc when it bends a bit. sandpaper it horizontally and it will be stronger.

You find a really nice miter saw on craigslist for $100 and feel like you found the best deal ever. 2 months later you've spent dozens of hours and hundreds of dollars getting the setup just right. --> It still blows dust everywhere. Cross-cut sleds are loved for a reason. Love your setup though, those shop vacs at home depot are awesome. 15 years, and it even blew out my siberian husky's coat.

I have a couple of the nylon (?) miter saw dust hoods that he alludes to that work well for me. The first one I bought is a Rousseau and the second one is a Vevor, which is just as good as the Rousseau and was considerably less expensive. (Both from Amazon.) I don't hook up any vac to the miter saws themselves, because it's too awkward with the dust hoods in place, and because the miter saws throw off a lot of dust from all different directions anyway, which the hoods capture - which is what they were designed to do, and they do it well. They practically envelop/cradle the saws, leaving just enough working room. Pretty ingenious (but simple) designs, the way these things work. Plus, static inside the hoods tend to pull dust in and then the dust clings to the inside walls of the hood. Occasionally I'll just give the hoods a shake, where dust settles down to the 4" exit port at the bottom near the floor, and is collected into a cardboard box sitting on the floor. Anything remaining I clean up with a handheld vac. I guess I'll probably in the future experiment with hooking up a shop vac to the 4" port, but for now I'm too lazy to do so and to finagle the room to do it. But the con is the initial assembly and setup, which is a nightmare. Better have two (or three) persons handy to assist as you cuss your way through that. VERY awkward. (The Vevor is essentially identical to the Rousseau in that respect.) As far as shop vacs are concerned, I suspect every manufacturer will eventually get on board the trail blazed by DeWalt, and make their vacs "quiet" - or MUCH quieter compared to the ear-splitting noise produced by regular vacs. These quiet vacs are a game changer, and don't even require ear protection by those folks concerned about their hearing, or at the very least are annoyed by the noise of regular vacs. I have one of those among my collection, and am amazed by how quiet it is. I also have the upgraded version of the Dustopper ("Dustopper Pro") sold by Home Depot. THIS is THE ONE to get. Fits very well onto a cheap 5 gal. bucket with its secure clips. None of that expensive collection bucket nonsense or cobbling up a collection bucket. Get a semi-opaque HDX bucket from Home Depot (so you can monitor how full its getting) as well and you'll be good to go. And not to slight Ridgid, they are my go-to as far as (quality) plumbing repair tools are concerned. I live in an old (cast iron/lead pipe) house, and have an ongoing project to replace all that stuff with pvc/pex pipe. You haven't lived until you've dealt with all that in a narrow crawl space.

Any time a "helpful" video tells me to 3D print something I'm out. But an alternative to what you did here is to go into the plumbing aisle and find a fitting which closely matches what you need. In this case you would get a 2", 45º fitting, and individually, hit each end with a heat gun for 2 - 3 minutes and mold it into what you need. It works, and is much less technologically encumbered.

I have similar set up, big rigid vac, put a y with 1 hose to miter saw and another stepped up to 4" with a rockler 10"×4" dust trap on table behind saw with hood. It gets about 90+% of the dust. Works great. I have this incorporated into a movable miter stand similar to yours.

Awesome video. Home Depot would be proud of you. As within a few days of watching this video … I purchased the stuff. And after a week it all began show up. But along they 1:10 mark your talk about “the need for adapters”. I’m stuck. Any ideas for me or going from the Dewall miter saw at 1 1:4 inch connection to my brand new Rigid vacuum and hose setup. They didn’t have the car kit but I did purchase the upgrade hose you recommended. But not bad as I purchased 5 of 9 of your suggestions. And will order the separator very soon. Just need help on the reducer adapters. Thanks. Again. Great video.

Have old Makita miter saw, for which I first built a cart, then added a cabinet above with a 2.5" hole for the vacuum hose. I ignored the horrible 1.25" dust port on the saw. I have a separate dust collector and cyclone collector. I added a front face to reduce dust blown forward. Some dust still flies (annoyingly) from the contact point between the blade and the work which the cabinet doesn't cover. I may attach a 4" hose to the cabinet--dust nirvana. Will eventually make a fabric dust "tarp" to pull over the blade-work contact point to stop dust. I hate dust.

I have the same miter saw and love it, except have you notice you can’t cut 2” lumber at a 45angle when you bevel the saw to the right? The motor hits the wood and it stops the blade about 10% short of cutting right through???! Bizarre design flaw, have you found anyways around it??

When I make vac hose adaptors, I try to use the Outer diameter of the tool instead of the Inner diameter. This the adaptor that I 3D print wraps around the tool’s port, instead of inserting inside. Inserting a hose adaptor leaves a 1/16” edge ring that blocks the dust. Always plumb your air for absolutely minimal resistance to flow.

11:55 - Another trick is to find Silicone Reducers that are used in Cars. If you have Dewalt, you can find some that will fit your Dewalt Table Saw Dust Port to the your Dust Collector. May need to wait 1-2 weeks if the product is being shipped from China.

165 CFM still doesn't move much from a wood dust situation compared to a real dust collector that will typically support 650 CFM or better. For a miter saw, though, as well as small tools, almost any shop vac will work even with a dust separator in-between. Except for sanders. For large tools (table saw, jointer, planer) or tools that create a lot of fine dust (orbital sander, drum sander) it really is necessary to use a real high CFM dust collector. Even with good dust collection, anyone who's in the shop regularly should also wear a mask as much as possible and, if budget allows, get a dust filtration system to help catch the smallest particles floating in the air before they go to your lungs. Use filters and bags that limit tiny particles down to at least 5 micron but 3 micron is better and if you can afford it 1 micron.

Only one problem with the relay switch - the saw and the shop vac together will likely pull *more than 20 Amps* , so won't you need a *30 Amp circuit*? I only have 20 Amp circuits in my garage.

They keep upping the price on that switch. Pretty sure I bought it for like $15 ten years ago. Every year since then I seen it go up and up in price. It retails for like $70+tax now. And it's not even built well. I usually get a year or two out of it.

I swapped out my included dust bag for a plastic trash bag that I taped on the saw outlet. There was sawdust caught in the folds of the OUTSIDE of the bag and ZERO inside the bag. It is simply a flawed concept that pure momentum of the blade will shoot the particles in the bag. Now I need to pay attention to what you're doing here, lol.

You mentioned the gallon size of the vacs but I didn’t hear you mention the Cfm size or even hp. You did say cfm was important so I was hoping for a min recommendation. I take it turning your 3D part so it flows out and down, instead of up, didn’t work for some reason? It seems logical to route downward since you run the hose down anyway and that would eliminate the 180 and help airflow.

wouldn't it be great if your miter saw just so happened to line up with a clear stud bay behind that sheetrock wall??...just cut away the sheet rock for another 3.5" of rear clearance for your hose! even if a stud was right in the way i'm sure there is a header/footer framing configuration to address that...if you dont like the messy look of the cutout you can always finish the inside of the bay to make it look nicer....whattaya think?....rob
