What about a screw broken BELOW the wood's surface?
@shoyrushoyru2 жыл бұрын
Same this is my problem. Screw head broke off leaving only the threads and shaft below the wood surface. There’s nothing to grab with pliers as you have to look into the screw hole to see a glint of metal

Screw a hole next to it and punch it out
@TomCee532 жыл бұрын
It depends on your required results. If you just want to get the top board off and don’t care about damage, I’d drill one or more small holes next to the screws and pry the board off. If you need minimal damage or to reuse the board, I’ve had some luck with drilling out the screw itself. You may need to start with a very small bit to prevent wandering,and be prepared to fill the hole with toothpick, splinter, or glue to hold the new screw.
@DorkPrince2 жыл бұрын
@@TomCee53 and if drilling it out anyway, no harm in using a left-hand bit. You might get lucky, the bit could bite and act as an extractor. That's why I'm watching these videos to begin with. I'm debating buying extractors or left hand drill bits but all the videos show stupid "can't you figure this out on your own" scenarios like these here where obviously you could just use pliers. And if you can't? Bah, just cut it off and grind it down! Problem solved! RIGHT??? That screw wasn't HOLDING ANYTHING that's got to stay there! And you can't always just replace the wood or move the mounted object! My scenario is that a friend's pet-and-baby gate is mounted in a doorway of sorts along a half-height wall that separates their kitchen from the family room. They always kind of slammed the gate closed, and over the years, one of the screws on the bottom hinge broke about a quarter to a half inch below the surface of the wall. Now the gate hangs wrong and scrapes the floor. Problem is, they still need the gate for the pets and they don't want to reposition it because they don't want a bunch of holes in the wall and it's currently centered on the bulkhead. If I can't use an extractor there, there's no point in buying a set. I might opt instead for a left hand bit set. Then again, what the hell, they're not exactly expensive. Maybe I'll get both?

What if the the screw head is the part blocked? The screw broke in a pedestal table I have so half is in the bottom and top is blocked off by a metal plate that went up the center large pole screw the keeps the center pedestal to the floor base foot of table. How do I remove the screw basically if it’s up side down broken off?

regarding the star bit screw removal, if you use a blowtorch to heat (ONLY) the screw up, you can jam pretty much ANY bit into it while it is still hot, let it cool off, then slowly remove it, as it will warp around the bit and dry to the new shape. you also don't need to reverse the drill with the nail removal. in fact, it will work better if you keep it going forwards, since there is no threads like screws have. lastly, you don't need a vice grip to remove nails, since i know fewer people have those. you can just use "channel lock" pliers (or any adjustable wrench with a larger head like that), and rock it on it's bulge to pry the nail out. i did that when i was tearing out old lath and plaster ceiling in my basement, and had a ton of nails in the ceiling left. they came out in literally seconds with minimal effort.

Good show; I've been using Vise Grips for years. I ran into a problem on a door though; the hinge screws broke off below the surface and I couldn't get a bit to stay on the screw. I tried a bit that drills around the screw, but couldn't get that to work either. I never did get those out, might have to just run another screw in along side them.

I'm dealing with this very same issue right now. The screws that come with doors are absolute shit. Shearing the screw heads off below the surface is one of the most common scenarios... this video is incomplete without addressing that.

If you hand tighten the chuck as tight as you can and then back it off one click it will prevent the chuck from loosening.
