FJ Cruiser 3D-Printed Rear Door Latch Release Mod

We did both mods (rear door release and window release) last weekend. Kept referring back to this video...getting the pieces to slide together is no joke! With a lot of patience we finally got it (added in the interior door handle to make it extra tricky!) all together. Big thanks to Dallas on the FJ Forums for the kit...looks neat and professional!

Just did the mod.Good to have the video as a tutorial.The tricky part is getting the slider part on.I was trying to get slider to slide on from top,when in reality,it went on from side to side,once it was aligned.Need a lil love-tap,but worked for me...

It would be a good idea to have some sort of safety LOCK to prevent the lock from opening while the vehicle is in motion or ON. You have small kids that might just jump back there and pop the door open on the Freeway... There would be no way to stop them from doing that while driving. Be safe!

This is an interesting point, and probably why Toyota opted not to include an interior release. I thought about this a lot while designing it. Some previous mods used an exposed rod protruding up through the top of the panel. I thought this was an accident waiting to happen for shifting cargo or pets, so that's why I created the button as a recessed button. Highly unlikely that it would be depressed accidentally. Obviously children should not be riding in the cargo area. As far as a safety lock, this release will NOT work when the doors are locked, so your safety lock is at your driver door fingertips. However, if you've opted to install the window open / door lock/unlock mod, anybody with a death wish could jump back there and escape to the pavement at speed. Of course this is true of the front doors as well, along with any door in any vehicle.

I don't get it, why do you have to open the rear door from the inside? It does look factory, nice job, but You are walking around to the outside to open the door anyway.

No different than having a door handle to open up from the inside. Some people like to camp in their FJs, and the inside door latch just makes it more convenient.

Google 3d printers near you. Some people that have them offer to print for a certain amount. In reality it's only like 2 dollars of filament. I think the guy charged $20 + shipping.

He is the one who designed this, but it's clear he didn't intend to mass produce these (hence the sharing of the 3D print files to the public), so I can't speak to how many other inquiries he may entertain.
