It is very easy to remove the center switch panel. The center console will need to be removed first. Follow this video or the steps below to remove it.
1) Chalk the wheels to prevent the vehicle from possibly rolling away
2) Remove the drink separator in the back of the center console
3) Unbolt the two 10mm bolts beneath it
4) Unscrew the shift knob (manual trans) and 4wd selector
5) Pop out the cover beneath the emergency brake
6) Lift up on the lower plastic piece so that it clears the emergency brake.
7) Move the drive and passenger seats forward
8) Turn the lower center console plastic so that it sits longways (front to back) between the two seats (passenger side faces down, driver side faces up) then lift the plastic cover from the front to stand it up. Place it in the back seat
9) Unbolt the two bolts behind the shifter after lifting the plastic cover
10) Unbolt the two bolts under the switch panel.
11) Press in on the center of the plastic snaps at the left and right of the switch panel (near where your calf muscle would be on your leg as you are sitting in the seat normally)
12) You can now pull out the switch panel to remove any switches, switch blanks, or to run any wiring behind the switches
13) You now have access to the rear of the switch panel.
14) To reinstall, follow the reverse order of what is above.

Got so excited when I saw this video. Thought for sure I'd have that iPod connector in mine (it's the base model with all the higher-end convenience packages). Nope. Darn it. Still a very good video - when it comes to running some connectors I now know how to remove the panel! Thanks a lot for posting it. Edit (08/2019): Wanted to let you know this was quite helpful today as I installed a new Alpine head unit and needed to access the parking brake wire. Easiest way to find it was by removing the center console. In, tapped, tested, and reassembled in under 20 minutes. Thanks again for this tutorial!

Thanks man. This made it so easy to do. I am one of the guys who has trouble reversing things lol. I have the automatic and it was easier to do. The bottom part of the console doesn't have to come out. You just have to slide it back. Great video

Great vid keep them coming. If I may add a tidbit of info. I installed a rocker for my off road lights in the panel. But I went a different route. I removed the cowl around the radio, the radio and heating controls and reached down inside through the opening. Ran my wire through the pushed out the blank I wanted to use and attached to my rocker. Snapped the rocker in and re installed the radio. Both ways work well. FJ's are very well thought out as far as working on them.

Hey - When I install my Bumper with fog lights in this week - what would be the best way to run the wires to a rocker or push button for them?? And does Toyota stock these buttons or should I get from a 3rd party? Thanks .

@theflyfishnut, I'll be posting a video within a week or two on installing my lights, I got my switch and fog lights in the mail a few weeks ago. I have relay wiring tutorial videos that show how to wire basic lights through relays, and it would apply to fog lights also. I'll reference that video in the new video. I don't know if you can get them from Toyota in stock, but you can definitely buy the Toyota part online. Be careful if you buy the switch online though, there are rocker switches (ARB/Carling style) that won't fit into the Toyota switch hole. You would have to buy switches that are made for Toyota hole and I forget the exact dimensions. The ones I've been buying have amber or orange lights on them so they match everything else :)

they are cheap Amazon cameras. a friend had some extra ones and he gave them to me. I'm planning on moving the front one to above the driver door facing down. then I'll add one or two more so I can see the sides of the vehicle. I ordered some wide 305 tires so I'll need to see the sides when parking since our parking spots are so narrow here.

As always. Very helpful video . FYI. I install a USB port accessed from the stereo panel. Question: what are those 2 existing blue connections in the panel?

It could be for the auxiliary outlet wiring in the back, subwoofer, roof lights or ATRAC. I think there are other options. There is a diagram that pops up on the FJ cruiser Facebook page occasionally that shows the location of different switches, so the plug SHOULD be in the appropriate spot for whatever switch was in that location.

With all of the blank switches, how did you determine what they were, and how do you connect an appliance such as a light bar, hood lamps, backup lamps to that particular switch.

+Cameron Garcia there were only two wire plugs after I removed the switch blanks. I googled a little and found out one was the atrac switch and the other was either subwoofer control or auxiliary power button. The other blanks were just a plastic cover with no wires behind them.

I have been looking to buy an FJ and I'm researching all the options and stuff and I've watch your videos. I see that you just added the Atrac switch. do you know if all FJ's are like this. where the Atrac is there but just needs the switch if its not there already?

+gonzosc1 I'm not sure, I would guess that they are, but I can't definitively say. My friend just bought an automatic 2012 version, and it had the atrac button already installed, so his auto version has it, so I would assume that the automatic 4wd versions that didn't come with atrac would have the wires there like mine did. That's all I know

Any chance you might know how to remove the shifter? I finally bought the FJ I told you about awhile back but now it's like stuck in gear and I'm trying to check the stick to see if something is stuck in there. Even in neutral if I let off the clutch she'll just stall for some reason. :[

Yes, you'll have to very gently though because the plastic will get tool marks on it. Use a plastic pry tool if you have one, or be very careful with a small flat blade screwdriver. Pry forward gently at the top and bottom and it should slip out easily

A flat metal strip of aluminum to attach the screens to each other and then I zip tied them to the mirror post so I wouldn't have to drill into anything

+james deluca to my knowledge, no. You need the rear diff for the atrac system to work

Yes, just as I thought. I'm in the market for an FJ Cruiser and I found one on Cargurus to the likes of my above discription, but no atrack is a deal breaker (I think). Since I do plan on owning an FJ, I did subscribe to your channel because your detailed tutorials will be very helpfull. I welcome any tips for someome in the market for an '07 or '08 FJ. Mahalo bra.

You don't need the rear diff for the A-Trac; A-Trac purely controls your brakes. It applies brakes independently to whichever wheel is slipping to give the other wheel more traction. I believe there is a kit available to add A-Trac to vehicles not equipped with it. Check purefjcruiser.com/ They typically have all my FJ needs in one place. (I do not work for them and am not advertising for them lol)

The fj40 is called the bj40 if it comes with a diesel engine, and those were release in many overseas countries. To get the engine you would have to look for the bj40 engine overseas and have it shipped, the easiest place would probably be Canada if you're in the United States

If you need to get to the bottom bolts for the switch panel so that you can access the back of the switches, you need to remove the centre console.

Manual fj cruisers doesn't have a 2 high option, it's full time 4wd, so it's always in 4 high and there's no way to take it out of 4 high
