A few months ago, I muddled the alphabet, but I knew I could go further. Some may say that destroying the fundamentals of language is one of my strengths.

You've mangled the orthography beyond any legibility, and the pronunciation beyond any comprehension, but hear me out here: what about the semantics? If you wear a black shirt, you could also describe it as a dark garment, or a dim top, or something like that. But why stop there? Clothing is covering. Covering is hiding. Hiding is omitting. Dim is unintelligent. Unintelligent is dense. Dense is concentrated. So then, if you are wearing a black shirt, are you not also wearing a concentrated omission?

"The /t/ in 'strengths' is the only permissible plosive that can exist between a /s/ and a /r/ at the onset of a syllable." I screamed when you sprung that news on me! Considering minimal pairs like stream/scream, strap/scrap, strip/scrip, straggle/scraggle, you can't make /k/ an allophone of /t/ between /s/ and /r/ on the onset. "ftrintsth" is still pretty bad though
@AgmaSchwa
@AgmaSchwa 7 ай бұрын
If you re-watch what I said you’ll see that what I said was that the only consonant that can follow /st/ at the onset of a syllable is /r/. Remember the whole reason I switched /t/ to /k/ in fkrintsth was to keep the /r/. there’s no word that starts with /stl/ or /stw/ because those would violate the rules.
@zozzy4630
@zozzy4630 7 ай бұрын
@AgmaSchwa Right, but you got the reasoning backwards. It's not that /t/ is the only permissible plosive between /s/ and /r/, but /r/ is the only permissible glide after /st/. That's why we can still understand "stwengths" as "strengths".
@AgmaSchwa
@AgmaSchwa 7 ай бұрын
Well that’s what contextual neutralization is all about, it involves every sound in the syllable, “stwengths” works perfectly in my system for the exact reason you just said.

9:36 I feel like “scrumptious”could be realised as /skʰɹʌmpʃs/ in quick speech, which matches the same “sPrVN(P)Fs” pattern. I feel like the same logic can be used to make a word like “scrumptions” and claim it can be realised as /skʰɹʌmpʃns/ which would then be an English word with more consonants in one cluster? (sPrVNPFNs?) Given that “strengths” is said to be the max I’ve probably just made a mistake lol. Not a linguist or IPA expert at all, if I’ve made an error feel free to correct me! Edit: I could’ve just used assumptions instead of making up “scrumptions”, lol. Both contain the long consonant cluster /mpʃns/ at least if I’m right that we can claim that’s how it’s realised in fast speech.
@AgmaSchwa
@AgmaSchwa 7 ай бұрын
Hey! If I was incorporating narrow phonetic transcriptions, this would be 100% true; since we’re basing it on phonemic transcription only, there would only be one set of diaphonemes per word except in the case of optional phonemes like the /k/ in “strengths.”

I was recently working on an English syllabary concept (you'd be surprised how much simpler it becomes if you factor out -s and -ed suffixes, the only unambiguous three-consonant cluster found in a single syllable is 'xt' as in 'text') and it strikes me that I was using the same methods that you are, but to nearly opposite ends.

We've heard of archiphonemes before in the context of phonemic analysis of japanese where /N/ and /Q/ are the archiphonemes of the moraic nasal (which has a complicated realization) and gemination respectively. For example, 合戦 (kassen) is often phonemically analyzed as /kaQ.seN/. This allows for the gemination to act as a phoneme which makes some analyses of the language to be similar and it allows for underspecifying the moraic nasal because, as stated earlier, it has a complicated realization (which is only sometimes a consonant) and it's easier in most circumstances to just not think about it. The 'just don't think about it' element to the moraic nasal is reflected in most phonetic orthographies where it's 'ん' or 'ン' or 'n' or the like without any differentiation to denote that, for example, in '先輩' (senpai) the moraic nasal (because it's followed by a /p/) is actually pronounced as [m] and that, in '日本' (nihon) the moraic nasal is actually pronounced as some sort of nasalized vowel which is broadly transcribed as [ɰ̃] as an ad hoc semivocalic notation which isn't really reflective exactly of anyone's actual realization if it is the final word in the utterance or if the next word starts with a vowel, a liquid (usually), or a fricative or as various other nasals determined through assimilation with the place of articulation for the following consonant. (This is why it's easier to just not think about it and transcribe it simply as /N/.)

I prefer that the character “#” be described as “hash mark” (or any of the other older names for it, e.g. “number sign”, “pound symbol”, etc.), rather than “hashtag”, as I prefer that “hashtag” be used exclusively to refer to a tag that begins with a hash mark. Even “hashtag symbol” to refer to “#” would be acceptable. If you called it a “hashtag” as an act of mild trolling, then, well-done I suppose.
