Great video of the FL9s.I remember hearing the Hancock air whistle in the distance when they passed near where I lived in the 70s and watching them speed by.Truly a great locomotive.

The first few were taken just north of the Peekskill station, toward the end they were taken near the small station of Manitau. The FL9 ran on N Y C 660 V electric and straight diesel. they could switch back and forth. During that period Conrail, MTA, Metro North leased Amtrak coaches. Jim

Must be professional camera work, because I don't remember residential 8MM color film with sound, back in the 70s. I don't think camcorders came out till the 80s? Love the content tho. FL-9s were my favorite, even if they were under powered. Thanks for posting Jack.

Kinda primitive equipment Joe. Each film cartridge held 3-1/2 minutes of film. There was a magnet strip on the film that would record the sound. It was introduced by Kodak about 1976. Pretty expensive. Here is a 1975 commercial for the camera kzbin.info/www/bejne/amnFfXWBZ9x8g5I

These are some amazing clips you have here! It all looks so old and worn out (the F units and the passenger cars!), that must have been an amazing time in railroading to see, not to mention watching Rock Island choke to death.

Those where self powered Budd RDC cras. They have Detroit Diesels in them. When they idle for a long time, they start smoking that like that. They just tacked them on the rear of the short passenger train to run them back south for service. Thanks for watching...

I moved from Fair Haven Ct. in 1976 and although I returned for two years, I worked a full time factory job in North Haven Ct. from '77-81 and was married twice. Life went on and my Railfanning stopped for a time. I can't believe PC just painted their Logo right next to the iconic NH and kept the livery. I thought repainting everything black was bad.

I wonder if the PC ever ran dual FL9s, one unit on each end of the train? My guess is, this eliminated a runaround move at Poughkeepsie.
@tedbownas27483 жыл бұрын
A couple of the trains in the video are set up that way. But if the train is more than two or three cars, it makes fueling and inspection more complicated, so they generally just coupled them up as a pair, with one facing north and one south. The first batch of push/pull coaches arrived in the mid-1980s, and after that, of course, there was no need to run the power around.

@jojoreztorc03964 жыл бұрын
The Fl-9 locos were dual powered, meaning that they have both electric and diesel power, hence the c truck at the back, which was to make room for the electric power.
